I just read the Orenda not that long ago, let me know what you think of it. I liked it.

Gretchen (eab2012) I'm currently having a love affair with Gordianus the Finder. That man is rapidly climbing my list of favorite fictional characters. I finished The Seven Wonders and I am now on a mission to find the book Saylor cites in his author's note. I'm moving on to Raiders of the Nile which really just makes me think of a young Harrison Ford running around Alexandria. I have to get through my pile of library books before I start any group reads. Fortunately (sort of) my five year old is in school all day and the twins still love two hour naps!

* does a happy dance * I love Gordianus!

message 5405: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Gordianus still has a long way to go before he can dethrone the likes of Harry Potter and Lestat but I feel like he's going to make a solid effort.

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments I cannot imagine anyone dethroning Sherlock Holmes in my affections. :)

message 5408: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) Now there's a homework assignment- Who is your favorite fictional character and why? (Because he/she is an awesome, bad ass is not an acceptable answer).

message 5409: by Margaret, Sherlockian Sheila (new)

Margaret (margyw) | 3341 comments LMAO, Gretchen, I've been interviewed for a forthcoming book on Sherlock Holmes that asked fairly similar questions. :D

message 5410: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I find you have to be specific sometimes.

Not bad, but it is more a procedural than a mystery

message 5420: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I finished Divergent (Divergent, #1) by Veronica Roth over the weekend. I really hate YA books, why do I keep reading them? I never like the "popular" books either.

Alicja - I thought the movie was way better! And it had so many people in it I like :) If you liked the movie but didn't feel like reading the book, keep it that way. Its too long (487 pages) and the MC is really annoying and indecisive in the book. She's much more badass in the movie.

Diego (gambitox) | 71 comments Ok, I just finished Warlock A Novel of Ancient Egypt (Ancient Egypt, #3) by Wilbur Smith .

So, Simona and...uhm...(the other one who also commented about this book), my verdict is...I found it far from appaling. Surely not a book I would recommend anyone to get into Wilbur, but for me it wasn't that bad. It was a very standard story, but it kept me entertained. I'll give it 3 stars.

Some historical innacuracies I could identify. Perhaps there were much more, but I'm not to much into ancient Egypt. And for a guy who doesn't really like egyptian history, to read 700+ pages within a month is a record!!

Was it the magical elements that bother you? Also, I've read many bad reviews about The Sunbird by Wilbur Smith , which although is in Egypt, is not part of the Taita series. Perhaps that was the really bad one you read?

Well ok, so now I'm moving forward some thousand years to get into the world of Bard The Odyssey of the Irish by Morgan Llywelyn Bard: The Odyssey of the Irish. Another half fantasy/half historical novel, and my first Morgan Llywelyn. Let's see how this one goes.

I've been trying to read that forever! But I never do before its due back at the library :/

message 5426: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) It was a Kindle deal earlier this summer.

message 5427: by Allison (new)

Allison | 1704 comments I know. But I can't wrap my head around buying books (even on sale!) that I know are at my library. My library rarely has the books I want, I have to buy ones I can't find :/

message 5428: by Gretchen (new)

Gretchen (eab2012) I have to own my nonfiction. I like to take notes while I'm reading. I may even write in my nonfiction books......please don't kick me out for admitting to committing a cardinal book sin.

message 5429: by Kimber (new)

Kimber (kimberlibri) | 785 comments I'm reading it on the kindle (purchased the deal earlier this summer) so I can make notes. I've found a few mistakes already and have had to google a few things because they weren't clear. Maybe I"m just subconsciously making it more difficult on myself because I know it's non-fiction. *sighs*

message 5430: by Jane (new)

Jane | 3480 comments I've found the nonfiction from which I retain the most is written for young people. That is not to say I avoid more difficult nonfiction; I just have to concentrate harder and perhaps look something up.

Well, good for you, Diego!
It's not news that we all have different tastes, but I'm sorry to confirm that Warlock was the one I was speaking about.
Please remember not to choose to try my favorite books... ;)
Anyway, I guess we can agree that we both like Taita as MC..

Gretchen (eab2012) Finished up Raiders of the Nile. I am going to end up owing the library money because I had to keep it past the due date. Oops. Now I am free to move on to I, Claudius: from the autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, born 10 B.C., murdered and deified A.D. 54 and The Sisters Who Would Be Queen

Jane | 3480 comments Am concentrating on Enemy of Rome (Gaius Valerius Verrens, #5) by Douglas Jackson Enemy of Rome / Douglas Jackson. So far, in my opinion, he has surpassed himself in this volume of the series! He has gotten better in all aspects.

Last night, for a change of pace, I began the short story collection: The Wine-Dark Sea by Robert Aickman The Wine-Dark Sea of Robert Aickman: horror [but I'd sooner call them 'strange' stories]. Am dipping in and out as the mood strikes.

I have only every tried to read one Wilbur Smith so far (The Seventh Scroll). My husband found it appealing, but I found the pace a bit slow. The story was good, I just don't think I got invested enough in the characters early enough to keep reading it. When I have more time, I do want to finish it though.

"Adventures In The Wilderness",camp life in the
Adirondacks, 1869.

Darcy (drokka) | 2675 comments Added what I believe are the links to Henry's books.

Reading the River: A Voyage Down the Yukon
Adventures in the Wilderness
Brutal Journey: The Epic Story of the First Crossing of North America

I couldn't locate the other one. Henry, if you could see if it's listed on GR and link it so that others might be able to give it a look-see. If the book isn't listed, but the author is, that would work too. Thanks.

Linda (ladylawyer8650) | 1702 comments Dissonance by Lisa Cook was a good read. My review is on Goodreads and Amazon. I wish I could claim Jane's review of the book as my own. Well said, Jane.
Reading The Bone Orchard by Daniel Judson now. It is a good guy, bad guy mystery. It is not HF, but it is a good read and helps with 'character withdrawal' pains. I will miss Claudius and even Caligula for quite a while. Do any of you have CWP Syndrome?

Now reading The First Horseman The First Horseman by D.K. Wilson , a murder mystery set in Tudor times and a nice easy read.
