I'm currently having a love affair with Gordianus the Finder. That man is rapidly climbing my list of favorite fictional characters. I finished The Seven Wonders and I am now on a mission to find the book Saylor cites in his author's note. I'm moving on to Raiders of the Nile which really just makes me think of a young Harrison Ford running around Alexandria. I have to get through my pile of library books before I start any group reads. Fortunately (sort of) my five year old is in school all day and the twins still love two hour naps!

I finished The Yard

Not bad, but it is more a procedural than a mystery

There are three murders going on at the same time, that really aren't related other than the same detectives are working them. The murderers are revealed fairly early.

In some ways the dialogue is very modern and a little jarring - 3.5 stars rounded down, I'll post a more complete reviw later (hide spoiler)]

I finished over the weekend. I really hate YA books, why do I keep reading them? I never like the "popular" books either.

Alicja - I thought the movie was way better! And it had so many people in it I like :) If you liked the movie but didn't feel like reading the book, keep it that way. Its too long (487 pages) and the MC is really annoying and indecisive in the book. She's much more badass in the movie.

So, Simona and...uhm...(the other one who also commented about this book), my verdict is...I found it far from appaling. Surely not a book I would recommend anyone to get into Wilbur, but for me it wasn't that bad. It was a very standard story, but it kept me entertained. I'll give it 3 stars.

Some historical innacuracies I could identify. Perhaps there were much more, but I'm not to much into ancient Egypt. And for a guy who doesn't really like egyptian history, to read 700+ pages within a month is a record!!

Was it the magical elements that bother you? Also, I've read many bad reviews about , which although is in Egypt, is not part of the Taita series. Perhaps that was the really bad one you read?

Well ok, so now I'm moving forward some thousand years to get into the world of Bard: The Odyssey of the Irish. Another half fantasy/half historical novel, and my first Morgan Llywelyn. Let's see how this one goes.

I'm reading it on the kindle (purchased the deal earlier this summer) so I can make notes. I've found a few mistakes already and have had to google a few things because they weren't clear. Maybe I"m just subconsciously making it more difficult on myself because I know it's non-fiction. *sighs*

I've found the nonfiction from which I retain the most is written for young people. That is not to say I avoid more difficult nonfiction; I just have to concentrate harder and perhaps look something up.

I love being able to instantly look stuff up on my Kindle! I wish my paperwhite had a better resource than Wikipedia but it's better than nothing. Yay for instant gratification!

Last night, for a change of pace, I began the short story collection: The Wine-Dark Sea of Robert Aickman: horror [but I'd sooner call them 'strange' stories]. Am dipping in and out as the mood strikes.

For those recommending the last book, thank you. So far this WWII memoir/present day shifting story is a smooth and beautiful read.

I have only every tried to read one Wilbur Smith so far (The Seventh Scroll). My husband found it appealing, but I found the pace a bit slow. The story was good, I just don't think I got invested enough in the characters early enough to keep reading it. When I have more time, I do want to finish it though.

Reading The Bone Orchard by Daniel Judson now. It is a good guy, bad guy mystery. It is not HF, but it is a good read and helps with 'character withdrawal' pains. I will miss Claudius and even Caligula for quite a while. Do any of you have CWP Syndrome?
