Well, first a question - I'm not sure how these work. I mean, the idea of making a new shelf really turns me off....Maybe I could use my Mt TBR shelf, because those are books I own that I want to read and get out of the house.... I could still have a big number for the GR community challenge, and a smaller number for the challenge in this group (the challenge to read from my personal library...)....
Am I thinking on the right track, do you think? Please explain in baby steps....
Thank you!!
On the right track! It seems like it won't let you use a shelf name you already have, which is a big pain. I ended up renaming the shelf I wanted to use temporarily, then setting up the challenge with the shelf name I wanted, then shifting everything from the renamed shelf onto the new shelf (with the name I wanted) and deleting the renamed shelf. A pain in the butt, but it worked.

No, that won't work if you take them off that shelf when you finish them. It will only count books on the chosen shelf that has a date read in the date range of the challenge, but it will count all books on that shelf with an eligible date read. So you can't use your read shelf either, you need a non-exclusive shelf. You could use one shelf for multiple challenges as long as the date ranges don't overlap or all the books count for each challenge.

Are you sure, or has that changed? Did it give you an error or what? The shelves I used in other group were all pre-existing shelves.
yeah, I tried using "i-own-it" (my existing shelf name) but it wouldn't accept it. I wouldn't have known why if I hadn't recalled someone mentioned this problem in the beta thread.
I think something else must have been wrong, because it works for me. I just created two shelves: Reviews and very-long. I added books to very-long and left reviews empty. Then I entered the review challenge and the Darkpool's Doorstoppers challenge (I used 500 pages as a lower limit - hope you don't mind) using those shelves with no problems.
:-) weird! I always was a problem child...the shelf name was def the problem, cos it had a red box or something (can't remember) so I'd know that's what the problem was, then I opened another tab to My Books, changed the shelf name and then resubmitted the challenge and it went thru. I didn't retype the name, just resubmitted what was there.
Oh well! We both have challenges that work and that's the main thing!
That is weird. Did you enter the dashes or just leave spaces.
I just tried changing the shelf to a different one and if I enter spaces instead of dashes I get the error, "Shelf name not entered."
Sounds as though everything worked out.
By the way, if you decide to rename one of your shelves, your challenge designated shelf name will automatically alter. You do not have to adjust it manually.

Oh, that's interesting, Almeta. ta for that. I'm pretty sure I put dashes in, but who knows. I can hardly remember what I had for breakfast some days.

This shelf will only work, if you leave the book on this shelf even after you have marked it read. If you move it to the "Read" shelf, then the "Goodreads Challenge elf" won't be able to find it!
BUT your shelf is in dire need of reading!☺ Create a Challenge Shelf and Sign up today!!!!

Hm.. Gosh I really don't like non-exclusive shelves. Lemme think about it a bit. Any thoughts/ insights from anyone much appreciated!
How about an exclusive shelf called something like "read for mt tbr challenge" that you could shift books to once you've read them. At the end of the challenge you could shift them to the shelf they would have normally gone to. You could even record the shelf you want to put them on in the notes section or somewhere if necessary.
Not that you have to defend it or anything, but maybe we could help more if you could explain why you don't like non-exclusive shelves. A challenge shelf would be very similar to your firstreads shelf.
Thanks for the offers of help! Ok, I just think of books as physical. I have one copy, so it can go on one shelf. So, does this make sense: I leave my MtTBR shelf alone except for making it non-exclusive. I sign up for the group challenge. As of Jan 1. I start reading books that are on that shelf. When I'm done with them, I mark them as existing on not only the MtTBR shelf but also on the read shelf.
I don't have to mark them as to-read prior to reading them, right? I can add books if I buy any more, right? And at the end of the year I can re-mark them as shelved only as 'read' (effectively taking them off MtTBR) right?
If I'm on the right track, I'm pretty sure I'm in!
(Darkpool, I really like that new exclusive shelf idea, but I think I can be sufficiently flexible not to need to do that. :)
If you make your existing exclusive shelf non-exclusive, it will dump them all on the read shelf. That's because all books have to be on some exclusive shelf and read is the default. It would be easier to create a new shelf and use batch edit to add everything from the old shelf to the new one and to the to-read shelf. Then delete the old shelf and rename the new one.
As long as you don't mind leaving them on MtTBR until after the challenge ends you should be able to use it as it is now. Like the regular challenge it only counts books if they have a 'finished' date.
Ok, I think I will then go ahead and use a new shelf and figure out what 'batch edit' is all about. Even if the book doesn't 'count' I don't want it shelved as 'read' if I haven't read it! Any tips on using batch edit before I dive in and maybe mess up?
Go to your shelf on the my books page. Change the per page number to 100. Click on batch edit. Click select all. Change the shelf to the new shelf (you need to create it first) you want to move the books to and click on add selected. It only does one page at a time, don't go to the next page without clicking on add selected.
OK that was a pain in the patootie. I introduced some errors, and I just know I didn't fix them all. So, now I'm even more motivated to complete the challenge, so that I can do some serious tidying up!
So, is the topic thread 'My challenge is' the only place where we can see each other's challenges? I would have thought we could keep an encouraging eye on each other... ?
I put the URL in the shelf spot. Now it's showing as blank. whatever. I think the setup for the template is that it's supposed to be a group bookshelf? But, if it turns out that the books aren't counting, then I'll make up a new shelf and add them as I read them.
No, you have to use one of your personal bookshelves because you have to put the books on that shelf with a date read for it to count.
Deborah wrote: "No, you have to use one of your personal bookshelves because you have to put the books on that shelf with a date read for it to count."ok, that's what I thought. I remember seeing in the Feedback Group, something about these needing a Group Bookshelf to be keyed in.

When you want to kick some books out of your house, send them to mine. ;)
Hi there. I'd like something similar to "Climb Every Mountain"--a TBR challenge, but one running from 1/1 to 12/31. Thanks!
Deborah wrote: "I used 500 pages as a lower limit - hope you don't mind..."
I went for the 500 page Doorstop, instead of the 600 page one, as well.
No one is being graded on these challenges. They are set up to record your own personal progress. Design them as your own.

There ia a small group Guardian 1000 Novels Everyone Must Read, that you might like to join.
I don't see an actual challenge feature there, so I will set one up for you here.

Almeta,Is it too late to request a new challenge for 2014? I'd like one called "Hot Off the Press" (or something like that) for reading books recently published.
I did this for 2013 using the "Yearbook" challenge, but I'm contemplating using the Yearbook for something else in 2014.
Thanks either way!

Could you add the challenge "Left Over Stew" for 2014. I want to finish up all my unfinished books from The Around the World challenge, Cross Canada Challenge and Alphabet challenge. LOL!

Having a little problem here. I put myself down for Serial Eyes, named my challenge and my shelf "Roz's Serial Eyes 2014". That was fine. I finished my first book and put it on the shelf with a date read, but it doesn't show up in the challenge. What did I miss, or do wrong?
Yeah, for me, I have to go click on the challenge name here, then click the # read to have it count.

I know. I have to do that as well. The Challenge Beta version is not perfected!
