The structural design of this challenge is currently being Beta tested and is not available to all groups.

If you have constructive comments for design improvements, feel free to make them here and I will be glad to pass the suggestions along.

I'd like to see task and point challenges, in addition to number of books read in a category.

Since the Reviews To Do and Bex's Book to Other Media challenges require that an action be performed after reading, things would work so much better, if tasks could just be ticked off.

I'd also like to be able to report earned points for such challenges as those sponsored by the Seasonal Reading Challenge Group and the You'll Love This One Group.

message 3: by Debra (new)

Debra (debra_t) Those are excellent points, Almeta. I hope someone listens to you and implements your ideas.

message 4: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I like these ideas too. Where/how do you envision reporting/recording the points earned? I mean, obviously we can just devote a thread to them, as has been done with the Member's Walls in the YLTO group. And they can be mentioned in a comment attached to the challenge, at least how I see it in your Challenge Yourself group. But you're thinking of something that goes into a database, or in a field on the members' profiles, or what?

Well, I am not a programmer, so I don't know exactly how "code" would accomplish all that we seem to want. Still, here are my ideas (which I also posted recently in Feedback group.)

1. Challenges with the ability to place a check mark after the date read is entered. Then "acknowledge" that check mark as an additional task completed.
e.g. Count this book as read, then count this book as reviewed for my other challenge.
Or
Count this book as read, then count my check mark when I indicate that I viewed the movie based on that book.
2. Challenges with additional criteria, matched to a specific list.
e.g. List 50 countries of the United Nations. Next to each country, allow the reader to enter the book read, and the rating given. Show the progress of reading through the list and declare the challenge complete when all 50 tasks have been performed. Have the ticker display which unchecked Nations on the list still need to be met.
Or
List 10 genres. Next to each genre, allow the reader to enter the book read, and the rating given. As challenge progresses, the ticker will display those genres not yet read. Ticker shows complete when one book from each genre has been read.
3. Challenges for multi-faceted tasks. The ability to describe a single task, perhaps as a comment with columns of check marks or radial buttons. When all parts of the multi-faceted challenge are checked, points are awarded. The points are set with different “weights”. There are 5 point tasks, 10 point tasks, and so on. Several tasks can be constructed for one Challenge and the accumulated points are tallied.
e.g. Task 1= For 20 points, read two books that have the word “King” in the title or subtitle (check, check), have a red cover (check, check) and were published before the year 1975 (check, check). Points are not awarded until all checks are marked.

Task 2 = For 10 points, read a book (check) that was published in the month that you were born (check).

The current total is 30 points. “Move to the next task."

These tasks, I see as group Challenges that will be recorded for each individual, but also as an accumulative report for the group as a whole. Much like the Challenge design does now.

I do also think that individuals should be able to set goals for themselves, much like everyone is doing in this Challenge Yourself group. I think that progress should show up on their profiles.

I just shelved a book on my challenge shelf, with a completion date of today, but it doesn't show on my challenge. With the GR-wide challenge, I could click on the challenge link and force a update. Is there a way to do that with the group-level challenges?

With more than one challenge on a page, it is difficult to distinguish where one ends and another begins. But if you look at the title of the Challenge in question, below the description is a line and then your personal progress "ticker". Just below that on the right-hand side is a link called "update my entry". Clicking on that should force the re-count.

Also, I don't know if you are aware of this, but the title of each challenge is a link. By clicking on that, you can see the progress of the entire group, your progress, and the individual progress of other members who are participating. You can make comments, send encouragemnt, etc. to each other. And you can "update my entry" from there as well. Your forced update will not force the group's overall update...so don't expect to see that result for 24 hours.

That doesn't do it.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

Okay--I opened the challenge, clicked "update my entry", then "save challenge" without changing anything, and that updated the number.

Cheryl (cherylllr) Those suggestions (that you also made in GR Feedback) make sense to me. I hope staff considers them. After all, some people will have to buy books to meet certain challenges, and there's a connection to increased revenues!

Shadow Jubilee (uhqs) It'd be great if the challenge(s) we were in could be moved to the top so that we don't have to always scroll to see our progress although I do like seeing what other new challenges are up as well.

Have you tried just clicking on the links of the challenges in which you participate in the Challenge Catalog and viewing your progress that way? Or are you just in too many of them to make that a reasonable option?☺

message 13: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) (Scroll from which page? The only way I know to see my progress is from the Catalog... ?)

Bex (kiltedtwizzles) | 5 comments I have each individual challenge bookmarked on my links bar then I can just go to them individually.

Smart!

Valencia (empowered) I see what Niq is saying. Make the challenges sort like discussion topics by most recent.

Well, Goodreads installed an "upgrade" yesterday, with the results appearing (at leasst to me) as a "down=grade"!

The first challenge listed looks a mess. All the HTML coding is not performing, and is displayed for all to see.

Sorting Comments by Newest is not working.

AND of course, we still can not view More Challenges. (I was so hoping!)

If you notice anything else, let me know and I will report it to the Feedback Group.

message 18: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) I do hope this group continues next year.

Meanwhile, I'd love for us to plan on some sort of little celebration, whether or not we made our goals. Maybe just a new thread that opens Jan 1st in which we each post what we accomplished and everyone cheers everyone else?

From Nell:

"Unless you log in to the discussion group and click to update the challenge, the books read aren't included even when they are on the designated shelf. For example, I've read more books for the Home Alone challenge than reported here - and I still have 8 days to go.
And it looks like we can no longer click to update.
Will this quirk be fixed for 2013 challenges? "

I have been pretty disappointed with some of the bugs in the "Challenge program". It doesn't appear that they will be worked out nor does it seem that it will be released to the general populace. Still in Beta testing as far as I can tell.

Comments and replies from the GR staff has been very quiet regarding the Challenge code.
