This TV journalist goes to get a really hard to come by interview with some big time gangster in Europe - maybe Translavania? and then goes missing. When she surfaces again, people are dying and bad stuff happens back in NY. Definitely post-9/11 story.

Oh, I think I've read this. Is the cover a close-up of a microphone? The woman is engaged, and she drives for a while in Transylvania with a really strange woman? If that sounds right I'll search through my shelves and try to find the name.
I don't remember the cover - I think it was mainly black and white. yes, she drove around with some woman who later ended up dead and haunting her.
