I'm quite certain this book is Marta Finds the Golden Door by Frances Cavanah it was later called Marta and the Nazis. In the book Marta's father hides the diamonds in her doll's baby bottle which is filled with water. It is a children's book, I would have read it in the 70's or 80's.
The scene I remember is a girl riding in a train, SS or guards, or police where coming through to check the passengers and the girl was worried about them taking her doll. With the doll is a baby bottle which her parents, uncle (some family member, may or may have been Jews...) hide diamonds in the water of the bottle. You couldn't see them because of the water. (and the guards checked!). The girl may have been Jewish, but I can't remember. Maybe she was hiding the diamonds for friends of the family who were Jews. I know it was set in WWII, and probaby Poland, or Germany.
Any ideas?
