Whitney Just a thought... Charlotte Fairchild is related to Jocelyn and Clary. Will Herondale is related to Jace. Aloysius Starkweather is related to Hodge. Benedict Lightwood is related to Isabelle and Alec.

But who is Jem Carstairs related to? There is no one with the last name "Carstairs" in the Mortal Instruments. It could mean that perhaps he never has children, but that seems unlikely. And now that Mortmain is using all of the opium, there might not be any left for Jem...

Do you think Jem dies? (I hope not)

M. The fact that we haven't seen any Carstairs in MI doesn't mean we won't, right? Besides if he really married Tessa, they wouldn't have any children (but I don't think he will marry her).
I hoping here that he will realize that Will and Tessa love each other and break off the engagement. He might marry someone else (maybe Will' sister, wouldn't that be grand?), but because of what the drug did to him, he won't be able to have any children which would explain the lack of Carstairs in MI.

Brittany I'm pretty sure he will. Although I don't think it's the drug that will kill him. I think he'll sacrifice himself for either Will or Tessa.

If he has to die, I would rather see him go like that as well.

Usagi Maybe they cannot find a cure and only way to keep him alive is making him a silent brother?

Marie-Line Dupere I don't see any other alternative than hime dying, how is another story.

Going back to the mention of all the relation in between the 2, I have an odd question, should'nt the child carry the fathers name and not the mother, so they is a relation in between the caracters but we can't assume really.

Cassandra is working wonders for me and I'm sure I won't be disapointed.

Anna Balasi Usagi wrote: "Maybe they cannot find a cure and only way to keep him alive is making him a silent brother?"

I wouldn't want him to be a silent brother. What a waste of good looks.

george ☽ If he does die, I don't think it will be because of the diesase. I think he will either
a) sacrfifice himself for Will or Tessa
b) get cured and realise that Will and Tessa are meant to be together and leave London and go back to Shanghai
c)realise that Tessa and Will are meant to be together and stay
d) ummm... die cos of the disease.

either way, i dont think that he will marry Tessa. in the scene where tessa tells will of the engagemnet of her and jem, tessa constantly thinks that she will like to kiss wills eyes open and make him smile again, or put her arms around him. and wgen she thought of jem, there were mostly friendly thoughts. and she described jems kisses as cool air when she describes wills kisses as fire. in every other book ive read, the herione always picks the one whose kisses are like fire... but i dont know.

Usagi Agree, with Tessa thinking of Will every step of the way, I really don't think they (Jem and Tessa) would marry. They has to break off that engagement one way or another. I couldn't imaging Will with anyone else other than Tessa. If Jace is a direct descendant of Will, then the story could only go two ways: a. Tessa is not a warlock. B. Will found someone else.... Personally, I prefer a.

I'm hoping Tessa will be able to have children. I would love if she was indeed related to Jace because I'm sure she will end up with Will. And I would love even more if she made a proper appearance in one of the TMI books. Maybe she can help save Jace. I would give TMI another try if that happened.

zara I do think jem will die in the end. as for will and tessa, it could be that will ends up with someone else or maybe jace is descended from a completely different herondale? or maybe tessa and will DO end up together and produces a kid. who knows

found this on cassie's twitter

Courtney I don't know why but I have a feeling that Jem becomes a silent brother and in fact is brother Jeremiah in the first series. I always wondered why one would choose to become a silent brother and how their human life played out...

Azhia I think Jem is gonna die I can just picture it a nice turn in the book. I love Jem of course but there has to be some major turn, eventhough I hope he's saved last minute. I dont think there gonna et maried. ; Will and Jace are related. Sabastian has silver hair because he's a demon. So idunno im confused I just know there not gonna get married it would be wrong..

Hannah nah, Cassandra Clare will probably make up some super complicated cure, plus think of all the crazy jem fans that would get mad if he died.

message 18: by Dannielle (new)

Dannielle Well as we all know, Jem is dying. And his time with Tessa/Will is growing increasingly shorter than expected. And with this being noted, I am sadly predicting the death of Jem in Clockwork Princess. In Clockwork Prince, one out of the two unfortunate cases were solved - the unfortunate case being Will's curse. And since Cassie left us with a semi-happy ending in 'Prince, I can only predict even more of a bitter-sweet storyline to 'Princess. Anyways back to the point. Jem will be lying on his death bed, and after finally realizing Will's equal love for Tessa, he will give Will his blessing to be with her. With Jem giving both Will/Tessa assurance, they will be together in the end

Julia In Clockwork Angel I wanted Tessa to be with Will, but now after reading 'Prince I still want her to be with Will, but I really don't want Jem to die. When I read the first book I thought it would balance out nicely with Tessa and Will together and then later on Sophie and Jem, but now Sophie is with Gideon Lightwood, which means that one of the two boys (Will and Jem) will be alone. But what about Cecily she came in at the very end of Clockwork Prince maybe there are some sparks between her and Jem... I really hope they find a cure. However I'm pretty sure someone is going to die in the next book, I just hope its not Jem ;)

message 20: by Chereace (last edited Dec 17, 2011 05:45PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

Chereace since i have never read the mortal instruments series (with the exception of the first book) I've never looked at it that way since I didn't know who was related to whom and what not. Giving this consideration, it is no secret that Jem is dying so it is likely that he'll die in the final book. However there's another theory (why am I talking like this? (really, 'whom'?))... anyway, I had a few theories actually:
1. Jem dies, Will and Tessa can be together
2. Tessa chooses Will, Jem (being the kind soul that he is) gives his blessing (and then maybe/probably dies..)
3. Cassandra Clare takes the "Dear John" by Nicolas Sparks approach and has Will do the if-i-really-love-her-i'll-let-her-go route and let's Jem have her.
Then getting back to what you said, Will may meet someone else sometime later in life, which may be how he's related to Jace. Or heck, maybe the Herondale name comes from Cecily (maybe she kept her name? idk...)

just some thoughts :)

message 21: by Dannielle (new)

Dannielle interesting Chereace that we share the same theory ... I really think that is what will happen. But obviously in a more eloquent way. Not only will Jem's blessing be a form of closure, it wont leave the reader feeling like one of our beloved boys got stabbed in the heart.

message 22: by nine (new) - rated it 5 stars

nine I love Jem a lot but i definitely think he is going to die. I just feel like Cassandra Clare isn't going to do the whole find-a-cure-at-the-last-minute thing. I also think that Jem and Tessa won't even get married. I feel like he's going to die before they're officially married. I can also see Jem dying and telling Will to be with Tessa. :( just thinking about Jem dying makes me really sad.

Chereace glad we agree Dannielle.
I also agree with you, nine. It's not like I want Jem to die but...i just can't see him NOT dying. If they found some 'cure' at the last minute that would probably make me roll my eyes and be like "oh hooooow convenient!"
but either way, I have faith in Clare and she hasn't disappointed me with the series so far soooo we'll see, I guess.
To bad we have to wait so long, right? :D

message 24: by Morgan (last edited Dec 18, 2011 02:06PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Morgan “I know about parabatai,” said Magnus, his voice rising in pitch. “I’ve known parabatai so close they were almost the same person; do you know what happens, when one of them dies, to the one that’s left —”

Okay so this is a teaser from City of Lost Souls. And I think Magnus is is talking about Will and Jem, so I think Jem will die.

I also think Jem would be able to move on at least if Will died, but if it were Jem who dies, Will would probably go nuts.

message 25: by Dannielle (new)

Dannielle Haa Exactly my point! Finding a cure at the last minute would be a cheap fix. both boys cant possibly have a happy ending :( & Morgan, I agree with you. I can just imagine the very scene in my head :( A very distraught Will, who I feel for the first time in a long time, will actually cry.

ugh. I shudder at the thought.

Julia Morgan wrote: "“I know about parabatai,” said Magnus, his voice rising in pitch. “I’ve known parabatai so close they were almost the same person; do you know what happens, when one of them dies, to the one that’s..."
I haven't thought of it like that until now, but I definitely think that your right. Because think about it, Jem and Will are practically brothers (aside they do not like similar in any way), they're like the two alter egos of one person. Like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.
But what we don't know is if Jem will die young (like next book young) or older and later on in life??? Hmmmm...

Lulah I just hope Jem disappears, I don't care if he dies or not he just needs to accept that Tessa and Will are made for each other, Jem should get together with Sophie or Cecily, not Tessa.
I am a major Will fan and nearly cried when Tessa agreed to marry Jem! ( Nice way of crushing my dreams Cassie! :P) But if things go good in Clockwork Princess ( Like Tessa and Will getting together I will be so happy I could KISS her!) But yes, Jem should either die or go with somebody else ( Or go silent brother)

Oh and maybe Sebastian gets the hair from Jem because he got with Cecily not Tessa, Cecily's a Herondale it could work!

roberta m I am a Jem enthusiast so I hope Cassandra keeps him healthy-and-very-much-alive at the end of Clockwork Princess. She could take the very easy way: Jem dying and giving his blessing to Will and Tessa or something along those lines ("Will, please... Take care of her and the baby". Totally entertaining the idea of Tessa having a baby, which might not be possible, as we all know). I truly hope, however, that she finds a better way to untie this knot. Hopefully one that involves Tessa and Jem ending up together (although I feel this is very unlikely). I'd hate to see Will die, but he could go Sydney Carton style (which is also very unlikely). I also hope Cassandra finds synonyms for "tentatively".

message 29: by roberta (last edited Dec 18, 2011 07:13AM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

roberta m Morgan pointed out the COLS teaser in which Magnus makes a possible reference to Jem and Will, but he also says this:

“It’s not that,” said Magnus. “There are some people — people the universe seems to have singled out for special destinies. Special favors and special torments. God knows we’re all drawn toward what’s beautiful and broken; I have been, but some people cannot be fixed. Or if they can be, it’s only by love and sacrifice so great it destroys the giver.”

This seems to me like a very good summary for "Clockwork Princess".

Dannielle Tallulah wrote: "I just hope Jem disappears, I don't care if he dies or not he just needs to accept that Tessa and Will are made for each other..."

Wow. How could you possibly dislike such a genuinely good character? ... I'm shocked. If anyone should be getting a backhand, I would imagine it to be Jessamine, not poor Jem :(

Anyways, I love both Will & Jem, and its obvious that Tessa chose Jem because she DID love him, not for the sole purpose of not breaking his heart ... & If Jem happens to survive ... I think that will complicate things even more.

How will Will survive with a broken heart?
How wil Jem survive, if Tessa decides to leave him?
How will Tessa even go about telling Jem that she wishes to no longer be engaged to him?

Too many painful questions. One boy must go.

Morgan Also in the back of Clockwork Angle their is a short story about Magnus, and he states that Tessa is in fact immortal, and that she falls in love with a mortal.

Was Magnus talking about Will? I think I saw somewhere in clockwork prince, Magnus describes Will as very beautiful and very broken; or was it in clockwork angel?

Morgan Usagi wrote: "Was Magnus talking about Will? I think I saw somewhere in clockwork prince, Magnus describes Will as very beautiful and very broken; or was it in clockwork angel? "

Ya that was in Clockwork Prince after Will leaves Magnus/the-wearwolf-guy's house, after Magnus summons the demon for Will and he finds out his curse is all a sham.

message 34: by roberta (last edited Dec 18, 2011 06:45PM) (new) - rated it 4 stars

roberta m I have been thinking... If Jem dies, I don't think it would be to Will that Jem would give his blessing. He would ask Tessa to take care of Will. Will is the broken one. Jem would like to ensure Will would have a friend that could be as dedicated to him as Jem had been till that point.

Again, I think this is too weak. There has to be a more complex, more satisfying solution. And I use the word "satisfying" fully aware that I will be crying my eyes out by the end of Clockwork Princess and probably shouting "This is so unfair!" to the wind.

Chereace you make a good point Roberta. That seems very likely also and I'm pretty sure I'll be resisting the urge to cry as well.

*sigh* Jem is a motha-freakin' saint...

ȘᎯɱᎯɴτħᎯ Yes, I think he will. Its bound to happen.

Lauren Whatever end happens in Clockwork Princess, i only hope there is either:

A: a happy ending for both Jem and Will.
OR
B: One ending for the final print. And an alternate ending as an extra.

(I am so bitter right now. I cant help squealing when i think about Jem dying, or Will being so broken.)

ȘᎯɱᎯɴτħᎯ Or we can always hope that Cassie changes her mind and continues the Infernal Devices with 3 more books!

Sanskriti Bist Yes, he will. And after reading her latest teaser I think that he might die early in Clockwork Princess.
""And the gold of her ruined wedding dress."
That wedding dress has got to be Tessas.

esthermarie Yeah I do *sniff*. I really don't see how cassandra clare could possibly work out the whole Will-Jem-Tessa thing (although maybe she'll surprise us. I hope!). Also, if Will and Tessa are together, where would that leave Jem? The opposite also applies. These three characters are so crucial that it would not work to simply leave one hanging, plus fans will go balistic. Weeeelll, I guess they'll go balistic regardless.

I don't know. I just hope that if Jem does die, he'll die happy. I love Jem! But I also love Will. *sigghhh*

Lulah Can't Tessa just get with Will! Thats all I ask!!!

Rebecca I have a though, I think that Henry might die in the next book. Wait read on! Charlott is going to be beyond inconsolable and with her being pregnant it will make it worse. Jem will realise by Marrying Tessa he would put her through the same torment as Charlott and being the saint he is will tell Tessa he cannot marry her anymore (because we all know he is going to die soon), leaving the way for Will and Tessa without anyone being too heart broken.

message 43: by AJ (new) - rated it 5 stars

AJ Ooohh, now that's an interesting thought! I have a feeling that Jem will step aside for some reason and Will and Tessa will be together. BUT... but I don't think that Jem will die. It's too obvious, and I'm waiting for a twist in the story somewhere, and because Cassie is such a great storyteller, I'm sure there's some way of getting around all the expected horrible outcomes!

Shannon Jem already said that Charlotte, Henry and Will looked for a cure for years and never found anything and even the Silent Brothers tried to help, nothing. So, I don't think they would suddenly find a cure after looking for years! Eventually his illness will kill him and he knows that...he just wants what little happiness he can have with Tessa while he can.

I think he will either die from his illness or he will die in battle.

Whatever happens, I still want Tessa and Will to be together.

Shannon nine wrote: "I love Jem a lot but i definitely think he is going to die. I just feel like Cassandra Clare isn't going to do the whole find-a-cure-at-the-last-minute thing. I also think that Jem and Tessa won't ..."

Really, I think the find-a-cure-at-the-last-minute would be a total cop-out! Jem already explained that they looked for a cure for YEARS! It would be ridiculous and unrealistic if they suddenly found a cure when he's on his death bed! LOL

Alexandra Jem probably won't die, it would simply be too expected due to his illness. Perhaps one of Tessa's powers is the cure, and she can save him. No, I don't mean the whole her love for him thing that Jem believes. I mean magical, unknown until the moment it presents itself power. Like shape-changing. Also, anybody remember the woman in City of Ashes and City of Glass (she dies in CoG) who tells Clary that Jocelyn put herslef into a coma on purpose? She had silver hair. Silver hair. SILVER. Perhaps this is just a coincidence, and perhaps the silvery-ness can't be passed down from the drug, but maybe . . .

Kaitlyn I think, from the teasers, Cecily and Gabriel are going to end up together and that is how the Lightwoods get their looks. And there is a new spinoff series of the Mortal Instruments coming out and the main character's name is Emma Carstairs and it is a few years in the future after the Mortal Instruments. By the way, am I the only one on here that wants Tessa to end up with Jem?

Julia Tallulah wrote: "Can't Tessa just get with Will! Thats all I ask!!!"
I've been asking the same question since the first book began.

message 49: by Lucy (new) - rated it 5 stars

Lucy I totally agree. Tessa should be with Will and I so think Jem will die.

Julia Kaitlyn wrote: "I think, from the teasers, Cecily and Gabriel are going to end up together and that is how the Lightwoods get their looks. And there is a new spinoff series of the Mortal Instruments coming out and..."
I heard about the series you mentioned. And I can't tell if I'm excited or a bit peeved off. I mean I love the whole concept of Shadowhunters but I don't know if I'm liking the plot of this book. But back to the point, the main character is called Emma Castairs so Jem must live on... unless he has another Castairs relative we do not know about.
