Alayna stood and walked over to the girl, taking a seat next to her and fixing her with a sharp, dark gaze. An invitation: did she want to talk? The eight-year-old waited.
The barest hint of a smile ghosted across Alayna's features. "Hi," she said. "My name is Alayna. Who are you?"
"Madeline, what are you doing here in the corner, all alone?" Alayna asked, using the high, innocent child's voice she faked when she wanted to fool people into thinking she wasn't as depressed as she acted. "Don't you like people?"
"Oh." Alayna tucked her knees up under her chin and hummed like any absent-minded girl her age would do. She said nothing more.
Alayna looked at her again. "I'm a serial killer," she said. The innocent act was gone, replaced with something fierce and cold and unusually mature. "I have an uncontrollable impulse to kill things. The doctors say I'm crazy, too--a psychopath."
"Believe it," Alayna said. She smiled coldly. "Do you want to ask a nurse? They'll repeat my diagnosis for you."
Alayna raised her eyebrows. "Delusional, then," she said, voicing her thoughts aloud. "Because everybody knows that vampires don't exist."
At this, Alayna giggled. "We could fight," she said, almost eager. "You could jump at me and I could attack you and they wouldn't think anything of it, I bet, if we pretend to be out of our minds while we do it..." she trailed off.
Alayna shrugged too, twirling the rose charm around her neck. "But we don't have to." She paused, then looked Madeline in the eye. "If you want to attack me so much, why don't you do it? Why let a couple of cameras stop you? I'm not scared."
Ethan sat on the edge of the couch, not really thinking much, but still watching everyone. He chewed his bright lips. He watched each person walk, sit, or simply stare at the wall.
Alice walked into the common room. Seeing Ethan, she walked over to him. "Hi, I'm Alice."
He was the youngest person Alice had seen at the Asylum, but then again, he was also the second person. She wanted to eventually meet everyone.
Ethan smiled at the girl, "Hi Alice, I'm Ethan." He held out his small hand to shake hers.
She shook his hand and smiled at him. "You're only the second person I've met here. Are you new too?"
For some reason Alice wasn't nervous talking to little kids like she was when she was talking to people older than her. Probably because he looked like he wouldn't hurt anybody.
Ethan nodded, "Yeah, it's kind of funny here. You can do anything pretty much. And they let you paint." His hand hurt slightly as he pulled it back.
"Why are you here? Do you hear voices too?"
Ethan shook his head and pulled down his collar to reveal the burn scars from the rope he had used to hang himself. Then he pulled his sleeve up to show the scars. "They said it was for my own good to be in here."
"Oh... I hear voices. They make me do things. I went into a coma 3 years ago, and woke up a couple of weeks ago. I don't remember my past much, but I remember the voices making me kill my parents..." Alice's voice got quieter when she started talking about the voices. "I'm not sure why I was in a coma; I don't remember."
Ethan nodded, "Sometimes... Sometimes it's better to forget it." He looked at his hands. He let his smile fade for a second
Alice didn't want to ask. She wasn't sure if she wanted to hear it or not.
((sorry I'm slow; my computer keeps freezing up))
(( it's okay.))
Ethan smiled back up at her, he pulled out a small drawing pad, " YOu like to draw?" He chewed his lip softly.

"I don't remember. Is it fun?"
Ethan smiled, "It is a lot of fun" He handed her a pensil and set the pad down, he pulled out a sheet for her.
"Thanks." Alice took it and tried to draw a bunny. She really tried hard. But she sucked at drawing. The bunny looked extremely deformed. Maybe the voices made it go jump off a cliff, she thought sarcastically. She smiled. She was so bad at drawing, it was almost funny.
Ethan smiled at the bunny, "It's cute. I like it." He was sketching an elaborate building, flowers and garnishes all over it.
"Whoa. You're good." Alice felt kind of disappointed that a little kid was better than her. But oh well.
Ethan shrugged, "You just woke up. You're doing great." He finnished his drawing and ripped it out.
"Not for a fourteen year old," Alice replied, smiling.
((g2g))
"Thanks anyway though. Bye Ethan." Alice walked across the room and stopped in the doorway to wave, and then left.

(( kk))
Ethan frowned as she left, and bit his lip. He crumpled up the paper he had drawn the house on. He tossing it in the trash and grabbed the bunny. He loved it; he loved him because even though he was kind of messed up, he was still happy looking. Maybe if the bunny could be happy while he was messed up, so could Ethan.

Stephen sat on the couch, lounging in a quite relaxed manner. He was reading a book, not too thick. It was meant for middle schoolers yet he did not really care, he just wanted to stop thinking about his life for a moment. His dark locks played with the flaring lights of the fire, changing from shades of crimson to egg yolk yellow. He wasn't in tune with his surroundings, tearing through the book easily.
Tucked neatly away in the corner of the room, Rowan buried her face in her hands and bit down hard on her lip to try and stop the sob bubbling up in her throat. They'd just let her out of her room, finally deeming her calm enough after that meltdown in the cafeteria. But she wasn't calm. He'd been on her bed. He'd had the nerve to sit on her bed and feel sorry for her! She'd thrown another fit right there and then, screaming curses at a boy only she could see, thrashing about on the ground and breaking whatever she could get her hands on. In complete and utter hysterics. She was better now, though. Somewhat better.
Reaching the last page, the final word, or at least until the sequel, he set the book down next to him. He began mulling over the plotline, trying to keep it saved in his memory when he heard a rather choked sob. It was unusual to him, seeing that the sound was usually coming from himself. "Are you-" He stopped himself, eyes falling over the girl. "Well you're obviously not okay." A lopsided frown followed.
Rowan shook her head and dug her teeth into her fist now, to stop the sobs. Her eyes, tightly shut, opened to reveal orbs of blue green as she glanced up at the stranger. She was surprised to see a patient rather than a nurse--the voice had been strong and male, adult-like--and momentarily released her clamp on the knuckles of her fist. The word she spoke was soft and barely audible: "No."
"Sometimes crying can help. Please don't bear your sobs just because of my presence. Trust me, I've been there more times than I can count." He wouldn't make her tell him if she didn't want to. It rarely helped him, and she could make the decision herself. Though he knew that crying it out did help, because tears themselves carried endorphins, to get technical about it.
You know he's right. You should just let it out.
Rowan shook her head again, violently this time, and just barely refrained from slamming her fist into the wall. She looked up at Stephen, eyes glittering with unshed--now never to be shed--tears. It was enough putting on a show for Troy. She wouldn't make a spectacle of herself in public again. "I'm fine," she whispered. And though she hated it, her voice was strained.

"Bullshit." He replied, quite nonchalantly. "A fine person wouldn't have tear stains, and anyways- if you're a patient you haven't been fine since the day you've been admitted." It was the truth, and he delivered it quite easily and efficiently.
He's right again.
Rowan turned her head towards the ghost, who stood across the room by the window. "You shut up!" she snapped at him, and then turned back to the man, meeting his eyes, letting silence grow between them.

He just nodded, knowing that she wasn't talking to him. The quiet was buzzing loudly, and he just peered at her through dark eyes for a while. Stephen pursed his lips for a moment, thinking that she'd break soon enough
For another few seconds Rowan let the silence continue. Then her teeth stabbed at her bottom lip again and she closed her eyes. "Sorry," she said to the man, eyes still closed. "He won't leave."
"Don't apologize to me, I can't see him. Makes no difference to me. It's your problem, only you can fix it." He was surprised that the words came out of his mouth. Maybe I should take my own freaking advice, and I wouldn't be here in the first place. He thought to himself.
Rowan opened her eyes. The man was very blunt. She liked that. The words were whispered, tentative, curious.
"What's your name?"
"What's your name?"
"Rowan." She was glad to see Troy had melted into the fireplace. Good; she could spare her eyes and mind the pain for once. "Why are you here?" she asked, looking at him with unmasked curiosity now. He intrigued her, this blunt, quiet man.
