Rebecca I've really enjoyed George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series- which is more of an adult read and not the typical good vs bad storyline with the same characters that we've read about over and over... magicians, orcs, knights, dragons, etc

Does anyone know of any good books that are more unique in nature, more for the grown ups?

There's the Malazan books, starts with Gardens of the Moon.

The First Law trilogy, starts with The Blade Itself.

I've heard good things about the The Black Company series.

Trike The best Fantasy novels I've read in a long time -- far superior to Martin's series -- are Peter V. Brett's The Warded Man and The Desert Spear. Despite their length, there isn't an extraneous word in either book.

The only downside is that the third volume doesn't come out until September(ish) 2012.

Rebecca I might give The Warded Man a go. Thanks guys.

Regarding The Black Company, i've tried reading the first book, but could never get into it for some reason. Gave up after a while.

Oh Ala, I couldn't have said it better. IO'm just now finishing the the Malazan Book of the Fallen (on #9of10 Dust of Dreams) and it is by far the best series I've ever read. There is simply nothing that compares to Steven Erikson.

The Blade Itself series was also awesome, and very similar to George R R Martin, but I prefer Abercrombie for his succinctness, Martin I find a bit verbose.

Greyweather | 231 comments The Prince of Nothing Trilogy by R. Scott Bakker, starting with The Darkness That Comes Before.

The Warlord Chronicles by Bernard Cornwell, starting with The Winter King.

The Long Price Quartet by Daniel Abraham, starting with A Shadow in Summer.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments I'll second the Malazan books. They're quite different than Martin's, but definitely "adult".

Same thing with Abercrombie. Both Erikson and Abercrombie have a nice way of mixing in humor with the grit.

Greyweather, I read the Warlord books earlier this year. I love that series.

I also read the first Abraham and liked it, but I remember very little about it.

ETA: Just realized I posted in the wrong thread. Thought I was in the 'what are you reading' one. My bad.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 346 comments My recommendations:

Sanderson's Mistborn Series
Rothfuss's Name of the Wind
Sprunk's Shadow's Son
Week's Night Angel

Mick (mickanick) | 2 comments I second The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett (I haven't read The Desert Spear yet because I was cutting down the wait for the next in the series.)

I also highly recommend Flesh and Spirit and Breath and Bone bone by Carol Berg. Any series that begins with the hero dying in a ditch while his partner robs him is okay by me.

Finally, I'm throwing out The Iron Elves series A Darkness Forged in Fire and The Light of Burning Shadows by Chris Evans. I love the Iron Elves regiment and kind of whimpered over the fact that it is an actual trilogy, which is practically unheard of these days. The final book, Ashes of a Black Frost, is out but I haven't read it yet (because I don't want it to be over!)
