Studs Terkel was a oral historian known for his many books where he interviewed ordinary folks about their lives.

I first read Mr. Terkel's "Working" (about people's work lives) as a middle school student and was fascinated. Later on, I read "Division Street" about race in America. He has also written books about jazz, the Depression, World War II, aging, etc.

This guy really knows how to listen. He doesn't interject his own views in the interview, he lets each person shine through. And his books read like eating potatoe chips -- you can just read one interview but likely, it'll tempt you into reading the others.

And who can resist a name like Studs?
