Jenelle Isn't it marvelous that we all have different tastes and perspectives? How boring if we all loved exactly the same thing. Sometimes your brain just isn't wired for a certain genre or writing style. My best friend hates fantasy, and I love it. "The Hobbit" was my introduction into the realm of fantasy and I have loved it my entire life (I don't remember exactly, but I was between the ages of 4-6 the first time my dad read it out loud to us). I've read it countless times, and as I grow and gain more life experiences, I find new things that pop out at me every time I read it. I love Gandalf's sense of humor, how Bilbo gets dragged off on this adventure without ever knowing quite how it happened, and I love the world Tolkien created and how this simple book he wrote for children brought forth the far more intricate and complex story of LOTR.

Yet, I can understand that the more archaic form of language, the older style, and the fact that if you don't read this one FIRST (as in, before you've read much other fantasy) it can seem a bit cliche or even "boring" since so much in the fantasy realm is based on Tolkien's works.

Great post Jenelle!

Sunleister The first time I read the book I was absolutely not interested in reading at all. Let alone fantasy. We read it in 5th grade and it didn't catch my attention at all.
However after I read LOTR a few years later I decided to try the Hobbit again and I'm not sorry I did.
I plan on reading it again before the movie comes out this winter.

Ree I must say that it was a somewhat rocky road for me coming to love this book. The first time I heard of it was my mom reading it to my sister at bedtime when I was supposed to be already asleep. The only thing I remember from that is the spider part. Years later I tried reading myself and didn't get past the dwarves coming to tea. Again a couple years later I gave it another try and - hey - I raced through the pages.
And this year - with the up-coming movie and all - I read it again (strangely I only remembered the less important parts...) and, once again, was hooked from page one.
Also, the German translation sucks, it doesn't capture Tolkiens writing/style at all. So, to all German-speakers I strongly recommend the original version (as always). translations just never measure up.

Kail I actually watched the trailer before I read this book . I like it since the beginning where he describe the hobbit hole . But what really interests me when Is when Gandalf start to define the meaning of bilbo's GOOD MORNING.

Line one: In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit...

What is a hobbit? Why do they live in holes? That was enough to keep me reading.

Adia Kolb I believe I'm in the minority group here when I say... I actually never got hooked on the book. I couldn't even finish it. I love the rest of the series, I just couldn't get into this one.

Celine☆ Oh my. Adia, I have read this book six times. Honest truth. I guess we must have completely different tastes. :)

They were wrong.

Celine☆ LOL I love Harry Potter too. I don't see how they're related...

Nyaore It definitely reads differently from some of Tolkien's other works, but I think that's part of it's charm. Although I don't think I'd have enjoyed it quite as much if I hadn't seen the old cartoon first. My mind now has a built in stereo for the songs in the book for whenever they come up, and it makes it so much more awesome.
Kidding, I'd have loved it either way. Having the actual songs in my head while reading just made it that much better.

It gets really interesting if you read it if you read it in a bath with an electric heater (plugged in) precariously placed on the side of the bath... give it a try!

That sounds dangerous...

message 172: by C. J. (new) - rated it 5 stars

C. J. Scurria A lot of people seem to not like the beginning of the book where Hobbit has an unexpected party of dwarfs and had to serve them. Some think that part is boring but I found that part fun.

If you Cyrille stopped before the chapter "Riddles in the Dark" the book will definitely get good!

Victoria Pearson Brandon wrote: "I am thirteen...why would I lie? Anyways, I believe you."

Gosh Brandon I had no idea you were 13! I take back my book recommendation (I only let my 12 year old read parts of it, and think under 18s would find it disturbing in places)
This is not about the hobbit by the way. the Hobbit rocks for all ages :~D

Hannah Cyrille wrote: "so you don't have any idea..."

I thought the book was a little boaring myself just because of the slowness, but looking back it was a great book. If I were you I would stick with it even if its just to say you've read it. The Lord Of the Rings is much more exciting to me

Isabella (All Da Ladies Luv Leo) Thomas Around the Unexpected Party for me. I was 11 when I read it

message 176: by Joanne (new) - rated it 2 stars

Joanne The thing I liked best about The Hobbit was the idea of two breakfasts. I still like it.
