I've wanted to read this one for a while. I'm only through the introduction but it sounds promising."

I have this one. Let me know if you really like it and I'll read it now as well.

message 2203: by Beverly (new)

Beverly | 194 comments So far I really like it, though I could see how his writing could be seen as redundant. I think it is part of his humor. I'll let you know more as I read more.

Dem | 984 comments I just finished and reviewed On Canaan's Side I really enjoyed this novel.

I have startedThe Homecoming of Samuel Lake and hope I enjoy it as much as on Canaan's side.

Pam Williams | 156 comments I am on The Laughing Corpse, the second in the Anita Blake, Vampire Killer series. I wasn't crazy about the first one but I heard that they get better. I'll see. If not, I'm giving up and starting something new.

This was recommended (well, mentioned) by a friend in a book group who thought it was too sexy. I immediately had to check out the series but so far have been disappointed.

Judy, have you read My Life in France by Julia Child? Five star, favorite book for me and for a lot of people.

I never say this, but I will go out on a limb and say that I think you will love My Life In France. It is so charming because she loves everything about France: the people, the food, the culture and her husband and you enjoy all her pleasures as she describes them. it takes you through her first ever French and gourmet meal upon her arrival in Paris through her beginning to learn to cook, etc. Okay, I'll stop now.

There's one thing better than reading about food; eating food!

Kristina (kristinalawhead) still Starcrossed (Starcrossed, #1) by Josephine Angelini because I've been kinda busy lately and haven't had the time or concentration to sit down and finish it. I think its finally getting to the point where I'll be hooked so hopefully soon!

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments My grandson is 12. It wouldn't be too mature for him.

Kathryn | 1 comments Right now I'm reading Life by Keith Richards. It's kind of all over the place..... why am I surprised? But after about 60 pages, he seems to settle down a bit. I was never one for autobiographies/biographies or memoirs, but suddenly I find myself wanting to read books other than fiction. Trying to broaden my horizons, I guess.

message 2226: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I started to listen to A Passage to India but gave up on it. The narrator, when reading the dialogue, used a heavy Indian accent with little distinction between voices. It was too confusing and I didn't want to have to work so hard at listening and I gave up.

I've started listening to Fahrenheit 451. I loved that movie but have never read the book.

I can give it another try at another time. Perhaps I was just tired when I was driving home the other day. Well, not perhaps... I was tired.

Beverly | 194 comments I am reading Catch-22, but it's going slow. It is really a guys book. I also thought it would be funnier.
I really don't like the main character much, but the writing is very good.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I just finished reading Shanghai Girls for a discussion in another group. I really enjoyed this book and would recommend it to anyone who likes Historical Fiction and the relationships between sisters.

I'm about to start Tenderness Of Wolves for our September discussion. I hope to start it tonight.

Chrissie Tom, Janice and Judy - Middlesex is a very good read. I gave it four stars. It is funny and the Greek family is one you must meet. Don't be turned off by the strange theme, it is a really good book. I read it a long time ago so I cannot link you to a review.

Thanks for the recommendation Chrissie. I have the book in paperback to read. I hope to get to it one day soon.

It's good to see you back. I was beginning to wonder if you were ok.

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments I started to read Tenderness Of Wolves last night for our September read.

I had started the audiobook Byzantium but couldn't get past the monotony of the narrator, so quit about 2 hours in. This morning I will start Firefly Lane. I think it will be a nice change in pace from what I've been reading lately.

I'm going to hold off on an ebook until September and then I'll start one for our September challenge.

message 2236: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I really enjoyed Swedish Tango: A Novel. It is primarily about relationships, but please see my review which explains all the other themes it touches on: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I am reading The Big Rock Candy Mountain. Stegner really has an ability to depict his characters!

message 2237: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, it is nice to be back:0) I hate not having a computer connection. I missed all of you and GR! Has GR started behaving better?

I bought this wonderful book in Sweden called Fågelsång. You get pictures of birds and by pushing a button you hear birdr songs and twitter when they are scared or are trying to attract other birds. It is fabulous if you do not see so well b/c you hear the bird and know it is out there. There are 150 birds in the book. Wonderful pcitures too. Even my three year old grandson now knows the sounds of many, many birds. You do not need your eyes or binoculars! :0) Wonderful book! TREMENDOUS. I do not think it has been translated into English. :0(

message 2238: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59890 comments That book does sound interesting, Chrissie. What a great tool for teaching kids (and adults) about identifying bird songs.

Goodreads has been behaving for me lately. I haven't seen the Alice in Wonderland picture saying the site is unavailable in a few days.

message 2239: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Janice, there are probably similar bird books in English!

message 2240: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie I have begun Blessed by Thunder: Memoir of a Cuban Girlhood. I was hooked when I read a bit of the text at Barnes & Noble! I loved Allende's The House of the Spirits, and I think that perhaps there really will be similarities between the two books. It is a memoir about a girl's childhood growing up under the guidance of her grandmothers and the mystical stories that were an integral part of her experiences. History too - as Cuba falls to Castro's regime. Having read about 40 pages, I am thoroughly enjoying myself. I am being given Cuban vernacular, customs and "mystical" beliefs all rolled up into a personal story.

I just finished The Big Rock Candy Mountain. I wanted to taste Wallace Stegner, that everyone says is such a fabulous writer. I am glad I read it but it was just too depressing for my tastes. Yes, the author does magnificently depict his characters. My spoiler-free review explains my views: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/... .

Pam Williams | 156 comments I am reading Room for my book club and it is very good. A difficult but rewarding read. I am starting Anna and the French Kiss because it was recommended by a friend and I've also seen it mentioned on several book sites. It will also be a lighter read after Room.

I'm feeling the same way about The Forest of Hands and Teeth. It must get better if you're on the third one. Are they all slow to get started?

Chrissie I just finished The Observations. It is a light, entertaining mystery. Even I liked it, and I usually cannot read mysteries! Please remember that for me three stars IS a good book to read! Here is my review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/....

I also recently finished Blessed by Thunder: Memoir of a Cuban GirlhoodBlessed by Thunder: Memoir of a Cuban Girlhood which I could not complete, but wish I could have. This I gave four stars to! My spoiler free review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

Now I will read The Last Station: A Novel of Tolstoy's Last Year. I will next year attempt to read 52 books from 52 different countries. I have too many "must read" books for the Russian Federation, so I will take one from the list now. Doesn't it look interesting?!
