I finished the New Weird anthology yesterday and am now about halfway through Peter Pan. Never read it as a kid, and I thought I'd give it a shot. Just picked up a bunch of new books today, so I'll probably be going through them right quick. I also spent some time purging my old books and books that I will probably never actually read, so I've got space again!
heather I hope you like peter pan, it's one of my favorites.I am finally almost done with Sex and the origins of death. A good read for those who enjoy reading about the conjugation of cells.
And I am about finished with fertility goddess, groundhog bellies and the coca cola company. It's about the history of holidays.
I can't wait to start the monters of templeton
Ellie wrote: "I am about to start the Gormenghast trilogy, which my dad g..."Hi Ellie. The first two Gormenghast are wonderful - in my all time top 10. The third one is... very different. Not bad, but be prepared for a total change of style. I hope you enjoy them.
I just finished Full Dark House and I really enjoyed it. It was a good complicated mystery and the setting of London during the Blitz was interesting. Now I'm reading The Private Patient by P D James and Flying Too High: Phryne Fisher by Kerry Greenwood.
Kipahni- Loved Peter Pan. to quote, "It was definately Good Form"Finished that baby up tonight and now it's on to Air Apparent, the newest Xanth novel in paperback by Piers Anthony. I've been collecting them for about 13 years. This is just going to be a fluffy candy book.
I just finished The Divide by Nicholas Evans and really enjoyed it. I'm ending the year with a little cozy mystery, On What Grounds, book #1 in the Coffeehouse Mysteries.
I'm reading The Hour I first Believed by Wally Lamb. I got it from the library a few days ago and considering it's got a huge waiting list and I can only have it for 2 weeks I feel I need to finish it ASAP.
Beth,Do you like it? I'm reading it too. I'm about 500 pages in. I like it so far, but I'm not sure if I like it as much as his other two. Maureen gets on my nerves (right from the beginning of the book). I hope to finish it soon so that I can start one of the January selections for the book group! I want to read both of them so I need to get a move on!
Starting the Land of Oz (2nd Oz book). I am hoping to plow through it tomorrow so I can start fresh in the new year on Thursday.Finished Air Apparent tonight.
Jaime, I finished The Hour I First Believed and I thought it was ok. It seemed like there was too much going on and too many coincidences.
Finished Married Lovers - Jackie Collins @ 12.45am. Will read the following 3 books: Dissolution - C.J. Sansom, Skin & Bone - Kathyrn Fox & The Family Bones - Kimberley Raiser.
Hello everyone! I am a newbie here. I just registered a few days ago. This site is really awesom. This is the first discussion that I joined. =)~

Hi Jenny! The answer to your question of how I choose what books to read? Is by recommendations from loved ones, or magazines reviews. Also if the plot summery is really interesting. Sometimes from movie adaptations.
I never judge a book by it's cover. Now matter how pretty or ugly it is. =)~
I'm currently reading 2666 by Blano, because it was on lots of "best of 2008" lists.I'm through the first of 5 sections - I'm enjoying it. He has an interesting use of the comma, which seems to add a lot of pace to the book.
So..umm...Finished The Land of Oz and Death: The High Cost of Living. Also just finished A Cook's Tour, by Anthony Bourdain. He writes exactly like he talks, so if you like him, you'd like the book. I thought it was alright.
I am going to read Fables: Story Book Love today (it's a graphic novel) and then start in on the Monsters of Templeton. Very excited about it.
Peony in Love, because you lovelies told me too.... it's amazing. I have just finished the first section and feel as though I cannot bear to read on.
Well, I've finally settled on one book and am reading it and enjoying it. I am reading Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. I will start The True Story of Hansel and Gretel by Louise Murphy next and finish The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie while reading one of the other two books. I have so many books I want to read right now that I'm having a hard time settling on just one, and, yet, I don't do well trying to read more than one fiction book at a time. However, I think I can fit in that one YA book this time.
Still reading the Monsters of Templeton and LOVING it so far. I am having a hard time putting it down.
Okay, so I couldn't put down Monsters of Templeton and I finished it last night. The last time I let a book devour me like that I think it was the last Harry Potter. Smashing good. So. On to Gods Behaving Badly, by Marie Phillips for now. After Monsters I need something a bit light and fun before I start in on Peony in Love.
Heather wrote: "Okay, so I couldn't put down Monsters of Templeton and I finished it last night. The last time I let a book devour me like that I think it was the last Harry Potter. Smashing good. So. On to Go..."
Heather, your enthusiasm about Monsters of Templeton has swayed me to add it to my to-read list. Since I had trouble putting the Harry Potter books down when I was reading them, your comparison carries a lot of weight. Thanks.
Finished Gods Behaving Badly today. Quite good. I would certainly rec for someone who wants something fun, light, and completely fluffy without the calories. Going to be starting Peony in Love today.
Mel wrote: "I'm currently reading A Dirty Job. It's been highly recommended and I needed a lighter read, after finishing The Chris Farley Show: A Biography in Three Acts."Hi Mel! I was wondering how was the Chris Farley bio that you read. He was one of my favorite in SNL. That dude was hilarious and I really miss him.
R.I.P Chris Farley. ='(
I've just started She Got off the Couch by Haven Kimmel and just love it. The character is just so confident and funny. It really makes me smile. It's really pleasant to read books about just a run of the mill American Childhood.
I love the parts with the girlfriends because I feel like we make some of our most intimate friendships in childhood when we were inseperable and spent hours together just exploring.
Forced myself to sit down and finish Peony in Love tonight. Did not like it.going to start The Three Musketeers either tonight or tomorrow morning.
I've been out of here for a while. I just started The Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray. I loved the first two books and am only 30 pages in and already like it (and nothing has even happened). I'm thinking about also picking up and finishing Eclipse, which I stopped reading halfway through in September.
I have been on a scholar phase (I think it's my lack of stimulis) so I am reading Egyptian Magic. It's about ancient Egyptian cult. I am prepareing for my trip to cairo to see the archeological museum
I finally finished The Three Musketeers yesterday, and I was feeling in the mood for something ridiculously light and frothy, so I started Tall, Dark, & Dead by Tate Hallaway. So far the book is playing out like a typical pulpy vampire romance novel, but at least the vampire in this isn't sparkly.
I've started The Loop by Nicholas Evans. I love his writing. I've read The Horse Whisperer and The Divide and thoroughly enjoyed both.
just started omnivore's dilemma. it's really good so far. i've read his book the botany of desire and this looks like it's going to be about on par with that.
Starting Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman this morning because umm I felt like it. Kiphani - Is that fiction or non? I've heard that title through the grapevine so to speak, but I've never actually looked into it.
non fiction. i am a bit of a foodie so i love it but i think anyone who is curious about how food ends up on our table (via industry, organic or hunter/gather)will enjoy it. it takes the simple question of "what should we have for dinner?" and explores the reasons and ways we as humans have come to answering this question.
Wow. It sounds interesting! Let me know what you think of it when you are done with it. If you like it, I'll throw it on my TBR list.
I'm currently reading like 10 differnet books...One is for my english class, a few are for personal enjoyment and a couple are recommendations...to many books so little time! My fav. one that im reading right now is a huge mythology book...love the ancient myths!
Started The Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K. Rowling (ML) and I am still reading Skin Privilege - Karin Slaughter, Dissolution - C.J. Sansom.
Currently reading Arabian Nights in segments as well as throwing Bits and pieces of the Thackery T. Lambshead Pocket Guide to Eccentric Discredited Diseases in amongst the mix. I've had this one lying around for so long, that I figured I should just try and read both together as they are both essentially short stories. I'm not sure if that makes sense to anyone but me though....So far it has been an odd mix.
Just sat this afternoon and read A Dog called Christmas - Greg Kincaid. A brilliant book, very interesting as well.
I just finished reading Dreams from My Father, because it it seemed important to know more about the most powerful man in the world. Very good, but a little strange; I've reviewed it on my shelves. Now I'm about to start The Handmaid's Tale as it's this group's February book.
I just started Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks. It's good so far, but I'm not that far into it. I've heard great things about it. It seems like a quick read. I think I'll start The Handmaid's Tale after that. I read it a very long time ago and remember liking it but I don't recall lots of details!
