Jay Do you use bookplates? Do you have a specific one you use, or just random?

I think I'm going to have a bookplate stamp made. I won't use it on rare books that may be collectible, as I know it can detract from the value.

I don't, but that's because I prefer to have my books marked up as little as possible. I've considered from time to time making use of those return address labels that charities keep sending, but I'm not sure if I really want all that info in my books because of those rare times I actually sell one or two. On the other hand, when I buy used books and find that sort of info in them, it is kind of neat to see where a book has been.

Beverly Kennett | 27 comments Once, I listed "bookplates" on a x-mas wishlist for my family. My husband, who is an avid reader, didn't know what they were. I never got them. I use those return address labels that come free in the mail, but only in books that I know I will keep.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments I've considered using them for books I lend out since they seem to have a hard time finding their way home. But recently I've decided to just not lend out books anymore and that would solve the problem just as well. I've never thought of using the charity address labels that is a good idea. (if lending you people you know)

Joanne (bonfiggi) I had nice ones when I was a kid. I have lots of the books that have them. I haven't used them in decades.

Tracey (stewartry) I tend not to use plates; they detract from the value (if there is one to begin with), and I refuse to lend my books (after having had literally dozens fail to find their way home) so I don't need my name in there. Like Joseph, I'd rather have my books as unmarked-up as possible - I could never use an embosser.

I'm an avid reader, but I had no clue what they were either. I just had to google it to find out

Pete | 42 comments I was going to make some using those Avery address labels that can be fed through a computer printer. I could make some design incorporating a quote about the evils of book borrowers just to make sure the borrowers know where they stood. You can even get those labels with removable adhesive so you don't have to worry about damaging the books.

Shannon (shananigansreads) | 355 comments Sonya wrote: "what is a bookplate?"

A bookplate, also known as ex-librīs [Latin, "from the books of..."], is usually a small print or decorative label pasted into a book, often on the inside front cover, to indicate its owner. Simple typographical bookplates are termed "booklabels".

Per wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bookplate

Tracey (stewartry) Me too.

Pete | 42 comments That's my favorite book lending quote too. I even have it on my home page. It's interesting that the bookplate says it's anonymous when it was written by Anatole France.

Actually I would really love to get some nice bookplates. Pete, do you know a good website where they have the labels with removable adhesive that you mentioned?

I also considered this:
http://www.practiquette.nl/preegtang (Sorry, Dutch website, but you get the idea)
I really like them and I think they'd look fantastic in nice hardcover books... Maybe a bit too fancy for paperbacks though haha.

Alondra Miller Never really thought about it; but looks like a great idea. Amazon has cards, stickers and labels.. mmm

Pete | 42 comments Carola, what I was thinking about are the kind you can get in any office supply store, like this:

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products...

Then I would create a design in Photoshop and print them.
