Erin I jjst started watching the vampire diaries and it is so much like Twilight it isnt funny. It is crazy like it is Twilgiht but with a different name and different charcters.

If you have watched it tell me what you think :D

.·:*¨ × Shannon♥Stelena&Bamon&Sydrian × ¨*: The TV show kinda does copy Twilight but making it the opposite with Elena being stronger then Bella, ect. but at the same time it does bash Twilight.

Everyone uses the excuse of the fact that since the Vampire diaries books were written back in '91/92 and that "If anyone copied, it was Twilight" This is not true because the TV series rarely follows the books, So that argument loses credibility.

Erin I was wondering which one came out first.

Brittany This should be a very fun discussion! I have seen all the Twilight movies and regularly watch the Vampire Diaries and can say with certainty that I enjoy the latter much more. The main reason is because of the complexity of the story line. Also, I feel we get to know the side characters almost as much as the main ones, and the female protagonist, Elena is a much stronger person than Bella.

Tiffany Going to have to disagree on this one I think that the only similarity there was that one scene in where Stefan almost loses control with Elena on the bed and he flew back into the wall like Edward did with Bella. However that's where the differences end with TVD there are witches, hybrids, dobblegangers and who else knows what coming. Overall the action and story lines imo are way better than twilight (breaking dawn was the worst book in the series and the most boring, eclipse was the best for me) but I will say that in the romance department and just overall love story I think twilight has tvd beat...though I do love stefan n elena a lot too. They are both great

Tiffany This is sorta off topic but did you guys hear Michelle tractenberg (can't spell her name, but dawn from buffy) could've played Bella? Do you think she would've done a good job?

What's sad is that scene wasn't even in the twilight books, they shamelessly copied from the MOVIE O.o

Very true! Remember the episode when Elena told Stephan she didn't want to be a vampire. She wanted a regular life (kids, a husband, etc.). I was like WOW, because most of the heroines are like "Oh I wanna be a vampire and live forever." Bella could definately take a page from Elena's book! Plus I love strong female characters.

Yeah I agree with you on that one when I saw that I was like oh wow Stefan is so hot but then I was like, seriously TVD?! That scene truly did copy Twilight lol couldn't he have least flew up n land on the ceiling lol

Agreed. I think Elena (from the show because I never read tvd book) and Hermione are good strong female leads...

I already said that besides the show doesn't follow the books.

Ricco The Vampire Diaries came out in the 90's way before Twilight, so if anything Twilight copied the Vampire Diaries. The first book of the Vampire Diaries series was first published September 28th, 1991; and Twilight was first published September 27th 2005.

Mary Beth Tiffany wrote: "Going to have to disagree on this one I think that the only similarity there was that one scene in where Stefan almost loses control with Elena on the bed and he flew back into the wall like Edward..."

I have to agree that Breaking Dawn was horrible!!! I have, but never have gotten around to reading The Vampire Diaries books, though I hear that they are weak in comparison to the show. I do however see how people would think they are so similar, and it honestly doesn't matter who came first... the fact is that there is always going to be a story that is somewhat similar, since most of the good ideas have already been done. It is just going to be a story with a new unique spin on the telling of an already existing idea.

*Sighs* how many times do i have to repeat myself, THE SHOW DOESN'T FOLLOW THE BOOKS, i'm fully aware TVD was written first but the whole TVD was written way before Twilight defense doesn't work here since the show doesn't follow the Books, they changed pretty much everything, Elena is an blond ice queen in the books, in the TV show she's not, in the books the Salvatore brothers are from Italy, in the TV Show they're not and became Americanized, in the Books Bonnie is descended from Druids and is scottish, In the TV show she's not, in the books there is no jeremy, anna, pearl, elijah, Doppelganger curse, ect. i could go on, but the point is the whole TVD was written way before Twilight defense is invalid here.

message 18: by Patti (last edited Dec 06, 2011 08:15AM) (new) - rated it 2 stars

Patti The show is still based (however loosely) off the books. Klaus was an original, the ashes from the tree, etc. I personally do not see that many resemblances to Twilight except perhaps the love triangle and maybe that bed scene. But, in truth, what young adult plots don't have love triangles? I find VD a lot more entertaining than Twilight anyway. There's somehow always a plot within a plot or some extra drama to keep the show going. Twilight fizzled out, for me, about 20 minutes into the first movie.

On a side note, I believe that the show is WAY better than the books. The books had so many stereotypes and were just bland.

.·:*¨ × Shannon♥Stelena&Bamon&Sydrian × ¨*: Patti wrote: "The show is still based (however loosely) off the books. Klaus was an original, the ashes from the tree, etc. I personally do not see that many resemblances to Twilight except perhaps the love tria..."

Please. Klaus is pathetic in the show and from what i've seen so far the originals are mary sue-ish, they can't die. And so many pointless characters come in just to be killed off for shock value. I prefer the books, sure there's some stuff i like in the show but the books were more simple and made sense but in the show so many characters are messed up/hypocritical. besides since the books were from the 90s, of course it's gonna feel stereotypical or bland. things were different back in 90s.

Patti I understand you point of view. For me, though, I don't like simple plots. I'd rather have something engaging that I can't guess the next plot twist. And that's why I couldn't bring my self to love the books. No they weren't completely horrible, but they just weren't something I could get into.

And your points about the show do have some truth. Klaus is the never-ending plot tool designed to trouble the main characters. Sometimes I wish he would just die already.

Gerd Tiffany wrote: "This is sorta off topic but did you guys hear Michelle tractenberg (can't spell her name, but dawn from buffy) could've played Bella? Do you think she would've done a good job?"

It's Trachtenberg (but I think you do pronounce the "ch" as a "k" sound in English), and she wouldn't have been my first choice to play Bella. Michelle's the cute type, that wouldn't fit the role, Kristen on the other hand is exactly that kind of plain type Bella is described as being.

Kirby wrote: "the sookie stackhouse series is really good, and sookie doesn't wanna become a vampire..."

Well, she's already got fey blood or something if I recall that right - so there's no need for her to change, she's already more than human.

true, but she didn't want to be a vampire even before she knew about the fey blood...

message 23: by Gerd (new) - rated it 4 stars

Gerd Ah, I see, I thought she always knew.

Kirby no, it wasn't until book 8, from dead to worse, that she finds out about it.

S.L.J. I prefer Supernatural. Vampires are afraid of human hunters in that and rightly so. :D

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

Ahem. I don't like either series, frankly, but The Vampire Diaries was published in 1991, while Stephenie Meyer didn't even get the idea for Twilight until 2003.

Darlene Vampire Diaries is only like Twilight in the first few episodes. They are actually reallyyyy different. As you keep watching it gets so much better, and really, I would watch TVD over a Twilight movie any day. Also, the books were written back in the 90's, way before Twilight. It wasn't some wannabe copy. The show's a lot better than the book though.

Sorry, Shannon. I haven't read the VD books; just seen some of the TV series. I guess that when people say "Vampire Diaries is just Twilight with different names", I assume that they mean L.J. copied Stephenie, which she didn't. Now I realize that this discussion is focusing on the TV series itself. *shrugs* I'm not well-focused today.

AlbertaJenn I don't get why people constantly think: teen + paranormal + love triangle = copy. I could go through the shelves at the bookstore I work at and pick out a dozen series with this general theme in them. That does not mean that they all copied from someone. It just means that it is a popular theme.

Diane Hahaha, you're the one who's losing her shiz.
How rude, calling everyone crazy like that.

-----------------------------------------------------------

I don't think VD copied Twi since it was written before Twilight. But I do think since Twilight reignited the vampire genre, people are comparing everything that has anything to do with vampires to Twilight.

I think it's absolutely lovely how Paul Wesley and Ian Somerhalder address Twilight. What gracious (not to mention gorgeous) men!

Interviewer: Do you follow the Twilight series?
Paul: "No, I have only seen a few scenes. But I have to thank Twilight because it gave me a job without Robert Pattinson and his films, I do not think that the Vampire Diaries would have been produced"
[source]

Interviewer: So before “The Vampires Diaries,” there was “Twilight” and “True Blood.” Do you think their success has helped “The Vampire Diaries” find an audience or does it put more pressure on the show to distinguish itself?
Ian: Beyond a shadow of a doubt, both of those projects help us tremendously. The monumental, phenomenal success “Twilight” has had at the box office definitely paved a path -- not even a path, a freeway -- for this whole vampire genre to surface. Not that it ever was underneath the surface, but for some reason at this moment, it has hit.

Mehnaz I'm sorry but I think you got it wrong.
Vampire diaries (NOT SHOW) was written before Twilight. So the name of the post should have been:

Twilight = Vampire Diaries with Different Names.

But I'm not sure about the show, one of my friends watches this and she told me that they have made a lot of changes, those were not in the books.

I read Twilight before reading VD and I was actually surprised to see that they had a lot in common. Although Stephenie Meyer said she has never read VD in her life. I can't imagine how two people can have thoughts so similar to each other :/

Patricia D. the only similarity is that there are vampires, werewolves, & a girl who loves a vampire. It ends there.

You want to talk books, the only thing they have in common is the blase writing and weak protagonist.

The tv show and movie share the fact that they are stronger versions of the material they are based on.
