NO. they are completly different. first off in the show of Vampire Diaries and the books are complety different. one, Elena is a Mary Sue in the books and is sooooooooooo mean she is like your typical Mean Girls charrie. and they changed the series a lot. in the books she has a young sister who is like 5. in the show she has a younger brother. on the show she is nice. in the books she is a total mean girl. there are sooooooooooooo mnay differences.
i think when people diecded to make the show they wanted it more like Twilight so that more people would like it. because if Elena was as mean as she really is in the books NO ONE would like or realte to her.

I think all teen vampire fiction these days has pretty much the same themes as Twilight as it's so popular. Even teen fantasy fiction in general. BUT the Vampire Diaries was actually first published in 1991 - a whole 14 years before Twilight! So you can't exactly say the author copied Twilight. Not that I am saying Stephenie Meyer did the same, but a lot of people assume Twilight was the first of its kind due to its popularity. Is the Vampire Diaries series any good BTW? I have it on my list of things to read.

The book series is OK. But the tv series is WOW. It's Soooo much better than the books. Plus, there's a bunch of hot guys, YAY ! ;)

I like Twilight, and I like the Vampire Diaries, but the Vampire Diaries tv show is completely stupid and honestly, even though I like the Twilight movies, they are no where as good as the books. And yes, like so many people have said, Vampire Diaries came out first. I think it was out before I was even born (or sortly thereafter). And aside from that, I don't really think the two series are that much alike (aside from the obvious vampire/human romance in both. And even that is technically different between the two).

The only similarities I can see between VD and Twilight is that the heroine is in love with a vampire and there's a love triangle. My sister and I were so excited when we heard a Vampire Diaries TV show was coming out,....then we watched the pilot episode...

Changed the story a little? They didn't even bother with keeping their appearance the same! (Coincidently, Elena now looks like Bella and Stephan is a better looking Edward) Or the location.

We watched a few more episodes, to see if it improved and because Damon was HOT! But he's not hot enough to keep punishing ourselves, so we stoppped

I watch Vampire Diaries and love Twilight. There are similarities and differences between the two, main one being VD have more of a supernatural aspect with the witches and hybrids.
I enjoy watching the relationships evolve and characters change - especially their views of vampires and weres.

I do believe Stephenie Meyer did not read VD before writing Twilight. There are authors who never hear of each other and write similar books in other genres as well.

Stephanie Meyers copied the Sookie Stackhouse novels and vampire diaries and Jane Austen. And even worse I was reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood and found a LOT of similarities. Yikes!!!!!

And also if u have only seen the movie for twilight. Its not at all like the books I felt it doesn't go in depth as much as the book but also vampire diaries is muchbetter book and show. Twilight is also badly written because is suppose to be written for an older age group but complying more to younger teens and even elementary schoolers. And its just not well written at all. I mean some people like the plot even though its lame but you'll catch that it's inconsistent and just not that well written. Vampire diaries is awesome

Twilight was not intended for an older age group. It is a teen book. And for the record, compared to a lot of other books I have read (several of which have been so called adult books) it was very well written. And I suggest that the next time you want to say something about who badly something was written, you at least write your review properly.

I don't think The Vampire Diaries show (never read the books) is anything like the Twilight books/movies. Other than they are both have vampires and werewolves, I really don't see any similarities at all. I LOVE the Vampire Diaries and HATE the Twilight movies, even though I like the books.

Vampire Diaries is not a copy of Twilight. It's the oter way around. Why? Because Vampire Diaries is book series made in like the 90s, which the show is based on. The Twilight books were made way later.

calm down, okay! it's not that big of a deal and you dont have to yell at people. vampire diaires was out wayyyyyyyy before twilight and a lot of people know that. i know it is annoying when people assume becuase twilight is so popular and all but come on. and second, twilight wasn't coped because of vampire diaries. Twilight and Vampire Diaries cannot be put in the same sentence. it won't make any sense. Vampire Diaries is a breath taking series with characters that captures your attention and steals your heart (even the evil ones- like Klause !!). it has a plot, and in every episode it leaves you wondering how in the world will they come up with a powerful ending to match this much of suspense. Unwillingly you find yourself falling in an unexplained addiction for the series. you feel like you have no choice but to love it!
while Twiligh on the other hand, well… i read the Twiligh saga and watched all the movies and i didn't like both. i found the story to be unrealistic! a story that talks about vampires should have real vampires! talks about bloodlust, thirst and contempt for the human kind. i mean, the love story of Elena and Stefan, that's a story that talks about a real vampire who falls in love with a real human girl who's at first was frightened of him and did not say "i don't care if you're a vampire". i did not relate or sympathize with any of the characters (perhaps only Jacop) , and found the story to be quite forgettable (just a bunch of boys fighting over a girl who's always followed by danger). howeve, i know that vampire diaries is a story for all ages to remember (the existence of Damon alone -with all his flaws and mischievousness- is enough to make the series worth watching! unlike Edward whose perfection and morality is irritating)

I thought Twilight was brilliantly written but that there was no story. SM is very elegant and crafty with her writing but not her imagination. There are far too many refernces to other stories that she is trying to put her own take on.

In other words; amazing writing, great story telling, but nothing orginial. Just recycled books from earlier authors.

No problem with that of cource, except, when it comes to adding your own spin on an already existing tale. You can do want you want, within reason, but what you can't do is go against your own set rules.

SM did this and it ruined everything.

everyone has there thoughts, but unfortunatly the person who started this didn't ask what people thought of each book and which book was better she asked if vampire diaries copyed twilight, which even twilight fans know that isn't true. so it is really not that big of a deal who is wrong and who is right and which book sucks so can you just stop. both of you please :)
