REMINDER: Building our group Bookshelf

Members are welcome to add books by Australian women writers to the group Bookshelf.
Click on the bookshelf link on the right
Use the search box to search Goodreads for the book by author, title or isbn.
Click Add and please select the Australian women writers shelf and the shelf that best reflects the genre of the book.

If you are not sure how to do so then please make your suggestion for the author and title/titles to add on this thread and a moderator will do so. If the title is new or upcoming, please include the author name, title, ISBN and if available, the publisher. If the book belongs to a genre not listed please let us know.

If you can't find any record of a book you are reading for the challenge on Goodreads (makes sure you do a search via ISBN as well as title) please leave the details (title, author, isbn) in a comment on this thread and I will add the book. GR librarian privileges are needed to add new books to the database

I know we have a group bookshelf but I also thought it would be good to have a shelf for my own GR books for this challenge and it would be good if others were going to do that too that we use the same shelf name as an additional way to find books we might read for this challenge. I was thinking of AWW2012

There's been a call-out to collect a list of australian women writers whose books are available on the Kindle. I've started listing names (intending to link to authors websites as I get time) at my website, but listing all the books of each author is going to get even more out of hand than listing authors!

So I've added a "kindle" tag to the group bookshelf. I thought that would be the best way to gather the information without splintering it out across the internet. Now, when adding a book, if you know it's available via kindle, consider ticking that tag for the benefit of browsing challenge participants.

Also an easy way to see if they are available on Kindle is to use the Get a copy: Online stores button under the books details. Choose Amazon as the seller and it will open the amazon page if it is available

I do that all the time Shelleyrae, love that section. But often, when they are AA they 'can't be found'...

How do we know if there's already a book on the bookshelf? I'd hate to have to go through them all to see;D

if you try to add it and it is already there, the add to group button is greyed out .

Jayne's book is already there :) I try as I see books mentioned or reviewed to add them as I go along.

I've had my head down for the last few months meeting a deadline but now I have more time for the AWWC. I saw the post on Facebook listing the bookshops where the books can be bought and a quick search of all of them revealed that mine are not stocked - except as paperback by three big ones. Makes me want to tear my hair out. What can I do to get my books in these AWWC lists?

Probably the best thing to do is to email the stores Phillipa - Elizabeth might be able to give you contact names for them to approach directly

Commiserations, Phillipa. Do you mean the bookshops' ebooks' lists?

If so, your book doesn't appear to be available on Booki.sh and now I'm wondering if any Hachette books made it on the ReadCloud lists?

Hi Elisabeth, a very good question indeed. I just Googled Helene Young, Bronwyn Parry, Favel Parrett and myself and none of our books are on Readcloud. I haven't checked Booki.sh but I'd say it would be the same. I have a Sony eReader and I'm just flabbergasted that I can't even access Booki.sh with it. Have to have an iPad or iphone or another sort of device - anything that's not a Sony! I think I'll ask the mothership about the availability of our eBooks on Australian independent booksellers elists ...

Hmm, I know this is an issue for Penguin books (they're not yet available on Booki.sh or ReadCloud). I think the same might also apply to "Booku". It could simply be that the publishers haven't given the booksellers the ebook rights yet.

Please let me know when word comes through from the mothership. :)

The word from on high is that they will soon be signing with Readcloud and the negotiations with Booki.sh are confidential. So there we have it ...

The way I understand Booki.sh is that it is that you store your books in a 'cloud' and read them on a browser on one of your gadgets or computer, so - I was told by Booki.sh - if you want to have Facebook, Twitter, your work AND read a book at the same time, you can. Marvellous!And so conducive to the total immersion that reading a book provides. But that's so yesterday. (I shouldn't be cynical but I can't help myself with this one)

Thanks for keeping us posted, Phillipa. Great news about ReadCloud. And interesting about how Booki.sh operates (I hadn't realised). The problem with having books stored on the "cloud" is: what happens when you're offline or at the beach?

You can also store them offline to read Elizabeth but only within the app - you can't separate the book from the software, that applies to all 'cloud' sellers. I dislike it because it means you never have ownership of the book and as such your ownership of it lasts only as long as the company does.

Incidentally Overdrive recently bought Book.ish and Penguin US recently severed ties with Overdrive so I doubt any penguin titles will be available with them any time soon.

It's all oriented away from the consumer, which is quite a turnaround. A pox on all of them until they return to putting readers and ease of access first. I'm not holding my breath however.

And prices! The ebook prices charged for most Aussie books is still way too high for them to compete with print books, in my view.

Me too, but I really don't know who to buy from anymore! Local bookshops don't have backlist - yet. But I don't like sending my book buying dollars offshore. I spread it around as much as I can.

I'm totally with others re: the cloud. It's why I sadly won't buy eBooks from Readings - they went with the cloud model.

Margaret, is CreatSpace a publisher? Or a platform for self-publishing? If the latter, perhaps we should start an Indie thread. There are so many self-published books coming onto the market now.

I will be adding it to the GoodReads list soon. Would this be a suitable link?

Regarding CreateSpace's status: The Amazon sites that list my previous books state that the Publisher is CreateSpace.
My dictionary definition of 'publisher' is 'a person or firm whose business is to print and issue for sale books etc.'. CreateSpace fulfills these conditions.

Margaret, I've done it for you, if you click on the link I made above, you'll see your book. It just needs a blurb and the cover picture now:)

You can't add it to the bookshelf until it's 'created', that's why I did it for you:)

I'll have to get my husband and editor Ronald Sharp to help with the photo, that's his specialty. I'll get onto the blurb as soon as possible.
