4. As Liesel's character developed, got wondering why she got so obsessed with stealing books, and thought I'd run this question by you all.

I don't think Liesel is obsessed with stealing books; she's obsessed with stealing words--stealing them BACK. Words are POWER. Look at what Hitler did with words? But Liesel's first book is the Gravedigger's Handbook--it's like she's burying them. Death says, "Somewhere within her were the souls of words" (p. 512). They are powerful. Instead of being FED words by Nazi propogana, she activiely TAKES them, re-appropriating words, making her own ideas.
