'Stokesified' was the term the late Navajo composer Frank A. Stokes of Brooklyn, New York coined to describe how any sound he heard he'd make his own.
I met the Navajo composer Frank Stokes as a neighbor who'd come out for a block party where I was cooking chicken in front of my grandmother's home on Labor Day 1995. The one hour conversation that started our friendship led to my working for Mr. Stokes until his death in December of 2010. I asked Mr. Stokes for permission to begin writing about his life on June 15, 2001, hours before Mr. Stokes was to perform a 3 hour, 3 set gig of his original jazz compositions. Mr. Stokes had come to playing with world class jazz musicians in downtown Manhattan like no other musician I had ever known. Mr. Stokes began his career in the 1970's as a fire breathing bassist in CBGB's and Max's Kansas City, the legendary clubs that gave birth to the punk rock sound of the acts opening for Mr. Stokes as he played bass with the late Australian magician Geoffrey Crozier. My book is based on 24 hours of interviews with Mr. Stokes and a range of players from throughout his career, from the underground to those he played with at Carnegie Hall. Sadly, of those interviewed, Mr. Stokes, his wife and the late Klamath drummer Bleu Ocean are no longer with us. The book chronicles not only the musical lives of those involved but also explores the devastation wrought by the attacks of September 11, 2001, when Mr. Stokes had the debris of the fallen World Trade Center towers strike his home as a friend was killed on Flight 93 and the downtown Manhattan music scene where he made his living was changed forever. Any musician who reads this book will be better off for the experience. Throughout, the honesty and sincerity displayed by Mr. Stokes only deepens the sense of loos for those of us lucky enough to have known him.

Just released my second book, Not Until Tonight, a New Adult novella.Every day after work, Haley goes to the bar across the street from her apartment to get a drink.
