message 1: by Betty (new)

Betty I added the new shelf to my books, putting my first read, Agaat, into it and will add some more of my list as I read them (or even before I read them).

message 2: by Betty (new)

Betty Tell me more about this challenge, Judy. thks.

message 3: by Sue (new)

Sue I just named my shelf and made my challenge number. I guess I can start adding books anytime? Not sure if I should wait to add until I'm certain which ones I'm going to read or if that really matters since the "read" books will ultimately separate out. Or is it better to only add those I think will be the selections I'm going to choose for each country.

message 4: by Betty (new)

Betty I discovered that to add your named bookshelf for this challenge, the wording needs to be exactly as in your Goodreads Bookshelf. The copy-paste method works well, i.e, around-the-world-in-52-books. Maybe I'll change the name of the shelf later.

message 5: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Maybe I am being dense, but isn't it easier to simply make a challenge shelf for this group and put on it those books you actually read as you read them! When the year is done you see how many are on the shelf.

Judy, I do not really understand how you do what you are saying. Does the shelf have to have a particular name? How does GR know to add what is read on that shelf?

message 6: by Betty (last edited Nov 30, 2011 04:38PM) (new)

Betty Chrissie's points and questions are important because talking about them will make clearer the why and how of this challenge. The suggestion for a group challenge linked to the group Bookshelf will show all the titles the members read in Nov 2011-Dec 2012 just as your personal Bookshelf shows all the titles you've read. This is a helpful suggestion.

The Master List, which Jenny maintains, to which everyone contributes personal lists, and from which group readings can be formed, presents the info by focusing on which members will read or have read a title.

The personal Challenge, upon which Judy and Chelsea post, is entirely something else.

The Group Challenge and Master List each foster good reading and group solidarity. The Individual Challenge is also good reading but is an optional motivator.

Chrissie Chelsea wrote: "Chrissie wrote: "Maybe I am being dense, but isn't it easier to simply make a challenge shelf for this group and put on it those books you actually read as you read them! When the year is done you..."

Chelsea, I never thought Judy was doing anything but offering an optional possibility! What makes you think otherwise? I simply threw out another possibility. In addition I wanted Judy to explain more because I didn't understand how to accomplish her method. I was hoping that if I understood it more clearly I might do it her way! Please go back and read my message again.

message 8: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Judy, thank you for your more detailed explanation. What a storm in a tea cup. Heavens. I never thought you were forcing something on us.

This is the first challenge I have ever participated in so I don't know how to do what many others of you take for granted. Judy, I want to understand how to accomplish your suggestion. You say, "you enter the name of that shelf where indicated on the challenge. " Where and how do I do that? I am lost ...... Then you say, "As you finish each book, it will be indicated on the challenge.3 Where do I see this? Judy, I haven't done this before so this is completely new for me.

message 9: by Chrissie (last edited Nov 30, 2011 11:07PM) (new)

Chrissie And Asmah, I appreciate that you did not jump on me and in fact value a discussion of all the different alternatives which are possible!

You took my original idea and made it much, much better! I meant only that I would designate a b personal bookshelf on which I would shelve ONLY the books I really end up reading. Then at the end of the year I can count how many I have actually read and see which they are. This is my personal challenge,.

But I like your idea of making a group challenge, If I understand your idea correctly when each of us finish reading a book for the challenge we should add it to the group's bookshelf, assuming it hasn't already been put there by someone elmse. I think your idea is wonderful. The group's bookshelves would then represent all the books that the group members have read for this challenge. I am merely saying I like Asmah's idea! On the other hand maybe others will not want to do this, in that it is a rule-free group§ :0)

Generally, I think people should not be so scared of discussions. Why are people scared of voicing different opinions? Heavens, none of us think exzctly the same. There is no right and wrong. A discussion should not be seen as criticism.

Jeeze, I hope I have been really clear now.

Betty Chrissie wrote: "I would designate a...personal bookshelf on which I would shelve ONLY the books I really end up reading. Then at the end of the year I can count how many I have actually read and see which they are. This is my personal challenge..."

Chrissie, adding and naming a new shelf (unless you've already done so) to your Bookshelves is the first step in Judy's challenge. A person can then enter their new shelf's name into the box of Judy's challenge which is part of a Goodreads' initiative--Judy will have to clarify.

I signed up for the Challenge, which meant adding a shelf to my (Asmah's) Bookshelf and putting its name in Judy's Challenge box. Whether one joins or not joins the challenge, it is practical to designate a separate shelf on your Bookshelves to track the titles one reads in 2012 Around the World (in 52 weeks) like you are doing.

Presently, I enter a book title on my new shelf after I know what I'm reading next. I know I'm starting with "Agaat" but I'm busy right now, and fickle, to organize the remaining 51 titles. Thankfully, at which reading stage a title gets onto the personal shelf is flexible. By the end of 2012, the result of a designated shelf in your Bookshelf for just your Around The World (in 52 books) titles will be efficacious.

Asmah, thank you for explaining! I previously did not understand that I could add books to the shelf one at a time as I read them. I too cannot decide now which I will be reading for sure. I am fickle, indecisive and have no way of determining my mood next year. I simply know that I will be reading one book from each country. I will see if I reach 52.

Judy, please tell me where your "Challenge Box" is so I can write in the name of my new shelf?

I can name the shelf anything I want, right?

message 12: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I just signed up for the challenge. I have put my first book on the shelf just to get started. I will put books on the shelf as I get to them. I have checked the "sortable" box because it numbers the books. This way, I'll have an automatic counting on how many books I've read for the challenge.

message 13: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Judy,

How do you change the dates on the challenge and also the summary of challenge? Ack, the pressure's on...

message 14: by Chrissie (last edited Dec 01, 2011 07:16AM) (new)

Chrissie Judy wrote: "Yes, Chrissie, the name is up to you. The challenge is found on our group home (page). You can add and delete books at will, so it doesn't matter if someone puts all their books on the shelf at onc..."

I found the challenge, it is right smack on the top of the home page. But where do I fill in the titles of the books as I read them? I just signed up for the challenge, but have not filled in any books anywhere. Where do I do that? I looked on the grooup's bookshelves and there is nothing there. Neither is there a place to stipulate my own rules. There is absolutely no place to put books on any bookshelf. I am very sorry Judy, but I have looked and looked and do not understand.

Judy, I love your idea, because now I knowd that I don't have to immediately choose exactly which 52 books I will be reading. Nor am I obliged to put htem all on some shelf now. But where is this shelf you are talking about?

Anne, neither do I see a "sorting box" on my screen.

I am a little bit worried that something is covered up since the font of my screen is large, but can all of this just be missing?

PS I feel bad taking your time. Maybe I should just skip it and not do the challenge bit. Not because I don't like it, but because I cannot figure it out.

Anne (reachannereach) Judy wrote: "Mikki, those are set. I had to put the dates that way since some folks have already started the challenge. However, if you don't start reading the books on your shelf until January it won't matter...."

Go to "My Books." Next to "Bookshelves" you'll see a small clickable "edit." Click on that and then you'll see different options for arranging your shelves. One is "Sort." Check the box for your 52 countries shelf. Put a book in it and you'll see it's labeled "1."

Anne, I appreciate your message that each of my bookshelves can be rearranged and counted when "Sortable" is checked. [My Profile > My Books > Edit Shelves] -- "Feature", "Sortable", "Sticky" "Exclusive", "Recs". Can I say, how fun!

message 17: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) You got to sorting via a different path. I don't even know what "Sticky" is used for. I didn't use the "exclusive" option. That's also optional. Ha. Yes, it's fun and useful to have read books counted for me (that's how I'm using the shelf).

message 18: by Mikki (new)

Mikki I like to use the sort option so that you can choose the books that you want to appear on your profile page if you feature the shelf.

Sue Anne wrote: "You got to sorting via a different path. I don't even know what "Sticky" is used for. I didn't use the "exclusive" option. That's also optional. Ha. Yes, it's fun and useful to have read books ..."

I labeled my "52" shelf "sticky" so it appears just below my exclusive shelves on the listings--easy to find.

message 22: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie FINALLY, I understand. What a knucklehead! Anne, it was your instructions that got me there. When I did what you said I got to the screen with the words - -- "Feature", "Sortable", "Sticky" "Exclusive", "Recs". - at the top on the first row. I have been using "exclusives", but "sticky" was new to me. I only had my "to-read" sorted previously.

I added one book that I know I will read. However if I want the books to be listed in the order I read them, shouldn't I remove this book from the shelf and instead put in the book I actually start with, when I get around to knowing that? Then 1 will be the first book I read, 2 will be the second and so on. Right? Or is there a simpler way?

I am so happy I finally understand.

Judy, there is no place on the screen where you enter your shelf name where you can register your personal criteria. Right? That is specified on our own lists. Right? It is so nice to understand.

message 23: by Daisy (last edited Dec 01, 2011 01:27PM) (new)

Daisy | 182 comments I didn't see if this question was already answered: do you know if the challenge and your progress on it will show up on your home page? I entered (at the beginning of 2011) a challenge of how many total books I'd read and I see the updates on my home page. And it looks like they update automatically after I mark a book as finished. Would that happen here too?

message 24: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I don't see anything on my Home page.

message 25: by Sue (new)

Sue Judy, I thought I was straightened out but now I have to ask what are "personal criteria"?

message 26: by Daisy (new)

Daisy | 182 comments Daisy, I don't know yet, but maybe someone who has added a book would be able to tell.

Judy, I'll change one of the books on my list to "read" and then back to see if it works, if it updates automatically.

message 27: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Sue, I used the term "personal criteria". At the home page where Juddy has posted the challenge, you will find the text: "For 2012 I am picking 52 countries and an author and book from each. Additional rules for myself are that it be an author I haven't read before. Pick your own (and adjust the rules how you see fit) and join me! " I have underlined words in Judy"s text. It is these underlined words that I was referring to as "personal criteria". I mistakenly thought we were suppose to write them in somewhere on the challenge form. This was wrong. They are specified in each of our own lists.

message 28: by Sue (new)

Sue Thanks Chrissie. I haven't done anything like that since I have been using the very broad format of the group. I guess I see that as a given.

message 29: by Chrissie (new)

Chrissie Sue, it is the little things like whether you sort your books by setting or author's nationality. Or wheter you let yourself have two books by the same author. Must the author's be new to you, type criteria. Little stuff like that.

For one thing, call your shelf "around the world challenge." Then pick a book, click edit shelves and choose to-read shelf AND around the world challenge shelf.

Pragya (reviewingshelf) | 253 comments Judy wrote: "Pragya, are you sure you have the right shelf linked to the challenge? :-)"

Yes, I have checked it a couple of times, even changed its name at my shelf and it was automatically changed in the group, so I guess the shelf is the same but something's wrong.

message 43: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I don't see it on my profile page, either, but that's okay. I have the 52 shelf and will just add books as I read them. I think Daisy said that the challenge didn't show up on her profile until you added a books with dates read.
