Proto-Where's Waldo book [s]

In the early 1980s my grandmother had a book or several books in a series that was very similar to Where's Wally/Waldo. It followed a man, wearing something red possibly, through a medieval world. The pages were very olive and brown toned, like a series of Brueghel paintints.

Sounds like Anno's Journey, by Mitsumasa Anno, 1977. Also wrote and illustrated similar books, Anno's Italy, Anno's Spain, etc.
