Riley Banks (rileybanks) | 48 comments Riley Banks is my pen name. My real name is Rebecca Byfield but, because I write young adult books, I didn't want to publish my adult books (with quite a few sex scenes) under the same name. It was all about creating or not creating brand confusion and yeah, protecting the 'innocence' of my young readers. That being said, I haven't done anything to hide my real existence. I just want to have the books listed under separate names.

I chose Riley because it is gender neutral. Could be either male or female which gives me some scope for future writing. Also, I read somewhere that lots of famous authors have 2 syllable first names and one syllable surnames. Stephen King, Danielle Steel, Harper Lee, Henry James, Roald Dahl, Robin Cook, Terry Brooks, Thomas Mann, Wilbur Smith to name just a few.

But there are just as many famous authors who buck the system. Stephanie Meyer, JK Rowling, William Shakespeare, Mary Higgins Clark, Edgar Allan Poe...

I also liked Riley Banks because it is the same initials as my real name and Banks... well, I'm hoping to fill my bank at some stage in the future with lots of money.

Love the pen name, and the explanation.

A.L. Butcher (alb2012) | 239 comments I did think of one for an erotica writer- Candy Bushpearl

I might have something along the lines of my grandmother's maiden name and my middle name or something.

message 56: by Tony (last edited Oct 19, 2012 04:46AM) (new)

Tony Talbot I did make up a pen name based on my initials for my erotic stories - used my first and second initials (TJ). I write YA, so I didn't want any kids to stumble across them!

I did think of combining old cartoon character names - Tom Jerry, Fred Barney, that sort of thing.

The author of "I am Number Four" series is Pittacus Lore - (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/...), sounds like a pen name to me!

Pittacus Lore is a pen name. I heard the real author appeared on Oprah, anyone know if that's true?

Very unique. I like that name.

Riley Banks (rileybanks) | 48 comments For those that do use a pen name do you also use a pen photo? I wanted to keep my two personas separate so one has my real photo and the other I use the model image for my book in my profile pic. Hope people aren't too disappointed when I come on their show to promote my book...

Pittacus Lore is the pen name of two people - James Frey and Jobie Hughes.

There were a few episodes of Oprah when James Frey was on. He wrote A Million Little Pieces and was touting it as a memoir and Oprah had been harping on about it for months about how amazing it was and how he changed his life and how he touched so many people with his book.

Then it turned out to be a sham. Oprah looked so embarrassed when she brought him out to get him to account for what he had done.

I do. Whenever I use Iron Fist an appropriate picture goes with it. I also have separate twitter account as well as many other accounts on different forums with the pen name. I also never use my real name or my pics on my blog.

message 79: by Danielle (new)

Danielle Forrest (theeternalscribe) I would just feel weird writing under a pen name. Plus, I think it would make my family feel proud to see my name on a book cover. I considered it at first because I am such a recluse and shy and don't like attention (I know. What's wrong with me, right?).

That being said, I do have a pen name that I used in the past (Angelina Alexis Whystine or A. A. Whystine) but have no intention of publishing under it.

Strangely, responding to the name, I think I'd have no problem with. I've used variations of the above as online screen handles for years so if someone yelled "Hey, Whystine," or "Angelina" or "Alex", I would probably turn around. However, it feels too weird signing my name A. A. Whystine. A muscle memory thing, I guess.

And bonus love to anyone who can figure out how to pronounce Whystine. I have yet for someone to get it right.

I used both of my names. The first is my IRL first name and the second is a play on my second name (Leo).

Or I can also use Sephyr but it's too fictional I guess.

I just thought about these 2 pen-names. I have written some stories but never got a byline as a ghost writer so it doesn't really count. heheh.

Sannie Hald (sanniehald) | 282 comments I like 'Insane' as it is my name 'Sannie' spelled differently. Yet I do not think it will work when getting published. 'xxxxxx' by Insane. (Who would buy that? It's like saying, 'I'm insane, buy my book? Innit?) ..

I have thought of Al'Eyolf, but that is again complicated (and inspired by 'The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan) ... Gosh, if only i liked my real name.
