Beth B | 3 comments I enjoyed the book very much too. I was a bit sceptical at the beginning thinking it was going to be heavy on sentiment and short on story. I quickly found myself being drawn in by the theme running through the book which the author uses to reveal a dog's purpose and uses a dog's perspective to show how human behaviour can seem rather illogical and puzzling. I'm constantly amazed at my own furry friend who seems to be perfectly able to read my mind and displays all the tricks of one who has "been here before"!

Lis Carey (lis_carey) | 3 comments I did really enjoy this one. Buddy/Bailey is pretty convincingly doggy throughout his lifetimes. And of course, "the boy" goes astray when life separates him from his beloved Bailey.

We all need a wise dog to guide us. :)

Tara (tarachoate) | 4 comments A friend at book gave me this book, saying she thought of me the whole time reading it. I typically don't like other people's books suggestions, and would have put it down quickly if it hadn't held my interest. But it does. I liked the difference aspects of the dog's life and thought the author did a good job of highting both different reasons (good and bad) dogs are bred and that dogs are owned. With love being the obvious good one. It was interesting that in none of his lives was buddy loved by the person who bred him and I wonder if this is a commentary on dog breeding, or just a narrative choice. I was a little disappointed with the them being dogs are to save humans... which I think isn't true. I think it's about love and being present. But I really liked how this theme finished the plot.

Lis Carey (lis_carey) | 3 comments Good breeder or bad, most puppies will find their fulfilled lives with someone other than their breeder. I think it's just a narrative choice; Buddy wouldn't learn all the life lessons that he did as a show dog or a herding trial dog.

Courte This was a great book, but I had to keep a box of tissues handy, because it never got easier for me each time he took on another "life". I have to agree with Laura's "purpose", I think Bailey/Buddy's purpose was to bring a little happniess into everyone's life.

Tara (tarachoate) | 4 comments I, too, felt the author was going for a different purpuse, but at the end when Bailey/Buddy runs away from "his boy" to find the childhood girlfriend (sorry, I can't remember the name), Buddy explicitly states that his purpose was not just to find, but to save...
