Don't know how to write in italic, or bold, or italic bold ?

Would you like to learn how to link a picture?

Post your requests here!

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments Hayes, you give great directions!!!!!!!

I've had three different people try to tell me how to post a picture from a website, and it's never worked until now. Yay! I've wanted to do this for a long time, and now I can!

How does it work if you want to include a photo you've taken yourself to a post?

Again, you're great! Thanks!

message 7: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 02, 2011 08:49PM) (new)

awww, shucks....
glad I could help :-)

Scout wrote: "How does it work if you want to include a photo you've taken yourself to a post?"

Next week I'll give instructions about how to do that.

message 8: by Karendenice (new)

Karendenice I would also love to learn how to do that!!

message 9: by Jill (new)

Jill Hutchinson (bucs1960) Hayes.....this thread was a great idea as there are still things about GR that I need to learn.

Anne (annemarigold) | 9 comments Help how do I vote for the Dec/Jan group read?

message 15: by [deleted user] (new)

Go to the group home page.

Look to the right, above the moderators pictures

You should see a list of things in green.

Third from the bottom is "polls"

Click on that.

message 16: by Anne (new)

Anne (annemarigold) | 9 comments Thanks. I've done that although it asked if i wanted to change my vote which seemed a bit odd since I hadn't voted yet!

message 17: by [deleted user] (new)

hmmmm.... are you looking at the right poll?

http://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/57...

message 18: by Anne (new)

Anne (annemarigold) | 9 comments Yes that's the one. I hit change your vote and then clicked on the author's name.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

message 27: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments Hayes, I went to a friend's page to message her, and I saw that she had a cloud as an option.

What is a cloud, and how is it used?

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Do you mean this? Wikipedia page on Cloud Computing

or this? Wikip. page on Cloud storage

Have never heard it used with messaging (but that doesn't mean much as I am under a rock most of the time!)

message 29: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments I wasn't clear. It wasn't a messaging option.

Under her bookshelves were these options: Cloud, Stats, More . . .

message 30: by Marie (new)

Marie | 7 comments Hayes great thread idea, very helpful. How do you create the bookshelf with covers above your bookshelf on your home page?

message 31: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl A cloud in this instance is a "word cloud," or a "tag cloud." What it does on GR is it takes the names of all your shelves and sizes them relative to each other, so if your fiction shelf has 1,000 books and your nonfiction shelf has 500 books, the word "fiction" will be twice the size of the word "nonfiction." It's a visual representation of your shelves.

Here's an example of a word cloud using the names of nations, sized according to their populations:

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

Marie, you need to get to "edit bookshelves" and click the box that says featured"... I'm out of town and using my phone. When I an back in civilization I will give more detailed instructions.

Thanks Lobstergirl.

message 33: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments Yes, thanks. That's cool.

message 34: by [deleted user] (last edited May 27, 2012 11:27PM) (new)

Marie wrote: "How do you create the bookshelf with covers above your bookshelf on your home page?"

Okay... if you go to the main site page, either updates or discussions, on the right down a bit is the "My Bookshelves" list.

On the gray bar, to the right, you can see the word "edit" click on that and it will open up the list of your bookshelves where you can re-name them, or cancel them, or add another (down at the bottom). There are also little check boxes. The first column is "feature". You can click on one only in this column and that shelf will be featured on your home page.

message 35: by Marie (new)

Marie | 7 comments Thanks so much. It's easy when you know how. The bars are on the left not the right on mine. Maybe because I'm down under :)
thanks Marie

message 36: by Charles (new)

Charles Is there a way to bulk-add books to a bookshelf? One at a time is tedious.

message 37: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes there is, Charles. If you have a list somewhere else, you can import the list. I'm not an expert on that, but I believe the instructions are fairly clear.

Go to "My Books", click on "add books", click on "import books" and follow the instructions. I've never done it, so I can't tell you how easy or difficult it is.

Or you can use the bar code scanner on your smart phone (if you have one), or you can buy a scanner from that place that begins with "A" or any other electronics place. A lot of people have trouble getting their phone scanner to work, but my phone works a charm.

message 38: by Charles (new)

Charles Another one. I've been trying to get certain discussion games off my e-mail notification and inclusion in the summary because they are so long. I edit the request to follow and uncheck update feed but it doesn't take, Am I supposed to be saving the changes somehow?

message 39: by Kaye (new)

Kaye George This is a huge problem for me too. I don't look at the emails I get any more at all because it means having to scroll through dozens of one line game entries. I wish I could pick which discussions I follow.

I get ones from discussion I've commented on, like this one, only. I tried to start a new one once, but got a snarky post for including a link. So I guess I won't start new topics any more!

message 40: by Charles (new)

Charles And guess what. I posted on this discussion and did NOT receive a notification, despite my asking for one. This is major annoying.

message 41: by Kaye (new)

Kaye George I am getting them from here, Charles.

I looked back through some emails and the forum I got the snarky comeback on was at Amazon, not here. I just wanted to clarify that!

message 42: by [deleted user] (new)

Just saw your messages now, Kaye and Charles.
I know GR has been having issues with the notifications and that they are working on it. If you continue to have problems you can post over at GR Feedback:

http://www.goodreads.com/topic/group_...

This is the link to the "bugs" folder. You can scroll through to see if your issues have been talked about, and if not you can post a message.

message 43: by Kaye (new)

Kaye George I joined a group, which means I'll probably get MORE of those digests, and can't post anything on it. I just want to get LESS email. I want to opt out of the games and pick which emails I get and which ones I don't get. I sure wish someone would tell me how to do that. I've clicked and clicked and clicked not to get those games, but it doesn't do any good. I don't read anything anymore except the few posts I've commented on and get individual emails to. I can't flow through all those digests. It would take hours every day.

message 44: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments Don't know if this will help you, but I just changed some of my preferences and, while I was there, I looked at the choices I had made. I only get a few emails - not anything like you're getting, so here's what I did.

I clicked on the arrow next to my photo (top, right-hand corner at the top of the page). I clicked on "edit profile." This took me to My Account page. Click on "emails." Go through the list and carefully choose what you want to receive. Under "Group email Preferences," I checked "none" for every item. You DO have to go all the way to the bottom of the page and click "Save email Settings."

You may already have done this and just have a glitch. If not, I hope it helps. Good luck!

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Scout. Kaye decided to leave the group, so she probably won't see your message.

That part about going down and clicking "Save" is a good reminder. It's so hidden down at the bottom that I have often forgotten to click it, and then I wonder why my settings are not correct.

message 46: by Vicki (new)

Vicki (vlord) | 18 comments I would love to opt out of the games in the posts also. I don't have time to go through that much stuff either. But, I would love to keep getting the posts about books and some discussions....just not have to wade through the games. I will keep trying, but it looks likes when you get the feeds for a group you get them all. I am not very tech savvy, so I may be missing some thing though.

message 47: by [deleted user] (new)

I have my settings set to "none" in the group email preferences and then I individually select the ones I want. (You can do this for every thread that interests you by ticking the box below the comment box, down there under "Add to my update feed").

Or you can do the opposite... select all, and then go through and manually deselect the ones you dont want. (Click on "edit" next to the "Notify me" and pick the appropriate thing you want).

message 48: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 1438 comments I spent a lot of time writing a book review, and when I hit post, the site froze. I waited for several minutes and then refreshed, whereupon I lost my post. Is there any way to recover a post under these circumstances?

message 49: by Jan C (new)

Jan C (woeisme) | 39173 comments Scout wrote: "I spent a lot of time writing a book review, and when I hit post, the site froze. I waited for several minutes and then refreshed, whereupon I lost my post. Is there any way to recover a post under..."

Scout, I've had that happen a couple of times to me. I frequently copy it before I try to post. I know it is not a way to get it back, but it is a way to save it before losing it. I've also, in the past, written my review on Word (or other word processing program) and then copied and pasted.

Last night I accidentally gave a book I am still reading a 1 star rating - is there a way to remove a rating?

message 50: by Val (new)

Val (valz) | 1542 comments yes, just click on the number of stars you want and it will change like magic! we all change our minds from time to time
