Nicola | 17 comments I was looking at using Google Earth's Trip facility to record where I go to on my journey. Found it a bit difficult to use but then I found TravellersPoint which is free and lets you draw a route around the world.
Anyone else want to join? My planned route is here

message 2: by Kristen (new)

Kristen Nicola, that is so cool! Great idea.

Betty Yes, very cool, Nicola, if I can echo Kristen!

message 4: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments okay so i'm a little CRAZY and i'm super excited about this mapping idea. i'm doing the 52 thing, but i also dreamed up this dumb idea of trying to read about capital cities of the world in alphabetical order (26 books). except i have to choose a non-capital for X. some of this will overlap with 52 (if i can pull it off--i don't want to read mind-numbingly boring books just for the sake of "visiting" 26 capital cities) and this mapping thing will be incredibly fun!

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Love this idea!

I also had just seen this, which is more of a visual checklist.

message 6: by Wendy (new)

Wendy (wendywoo) | 75 comments Totally cool! I was just thinking it would be nifty to have some sort of visual to mark where I have "been". Thanks for the links! I will probably be reading in a really random (and undisciplined) order so will most likely lurch all over the map like a drunken sailor :-)

Marieke, may I recommend a book on Xanadu for your capital cities tour? Or do they have to be real places? I think watching the Olivia Newton John movie could probably also count in a pinch.

message 7: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments I will also be a drunken sailor...with hidden alphabetization.

Hmmmm...Xanadu sounds like a good idea. Can I map it?

message 8: by Beth (new)

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments Wendy, I'm taking the drunken sailor approach too, but will have fun using the maps anyhow!

message 10: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Omigosh! Love Love Love this! Thanks, Nicola, this will be a great help and fun too.

message 11: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments I think we should all write drunken sailor blog posts about our literary travels.

Your route made me laugh out loud - like a big scribble on the globe, fabulous.

message 13: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Is it possible to map it as we go? Or make changes?

message 14: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Marieke wrote: "Is it possible to map it as we go? Or make changes?"

That's what I was wondering as I'm not really one that sticks to itinerary plans! :D

Marieke, do we just play drunk?

message 15: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Yes, play drunk and make drunken changes. With parrots. I will put a bird on it.

I'm pretty excited about this tool. I think I will practice by making a record of the Tour d'Afrique we've been doing at Great African Reads for the past two-ish years.

If only I didn't have to go to work this morning!

message 16: by Mikki (new)

Mikki Don't go Marieke, it's raining. I will write you a note.

message 17: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 17 comments Marieke wrote: "Is it possible to map it as we go? Or make changes?"

You can map it as you go, change a route part way through (if you decide to read another book from a different country) you can add notes to each place as you visit and the website also lets you look at photos of the country/cities as you go!

message 18: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments Mikki wrote: "Don't go Marieke, it's raining. I will write you a note."

Thanks, Mikki. You're the best.

Excellent, Nicola! I'm very excited to give it a try! And since Mikki kindly wrote me a note to excuse me from work today.............

I was getting dizzy following her routes. Major carbon footprint.

message 20: by Marieke (new)

Marieke | 209 comments I'm also going to make large carbon footprints. I decided to make a separate map for my capital cities tour. And I totally included Xanadu. Who cares if it's a former capital?? Haha.

It's scribbly: http://www.travellerspoint.com/member...

Beth (eparks4232) | 311 comments Ok, I am trying NOT to do the drunken sailor thing, and actually added a book to make a long leg into two shorter ones. I'm pretty sure I'm nuts. Here's the map of the 53 stops on my reading tour for 2012 (and I'm going to try to go in order, but might deviate if there's a group read).

ooo yours is pretty! and if you minimize it way down, it's really pretty, like a garland of some sort across the globe. :D

Anne (reachannereach) This site, bookdrum, has over 150 books dotted on a map of Google Earth. It's pretty cool. You click on a red pin and you get info and the city and the book.

Betty Very interesting--book drum-- Anne. I'm particularly interested in their multi-faceted profile of Proust's "Swann's Way". A terrific resource.

I haven't seen the Proust bit yet. I've been busy circling the globe. There are a lot of interesting things on that site.

message 26: by Constance (new)

Constance (Lieber) | 54 comments I am so glad I found this group. I am almost finished putting together my book list. Doing the traveler's map thing is fascinating -- I want to do it, too (assuming I can figure out how to make it work. My son says my age is why I have trouble with technology. I love him anyway!)I spend so much time reading books I have to for research, sometimes I forget to branch out. This group and challenge is a marvelous way to do that.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments Welcome Constance!

It's so nice. But we can add about a 100 more books in there. :)

Wow, that's a great idea! I might do this!

message 32: by Parsa (new)

Parsa | 101 comments This is such a great idea. I might do it with a blog. I find I am so tired of reading constantly these days. :/

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 1309 comments I love seeing all the covers! I'm going to copy this! Of course, if you have a shelf with them all, you can do this with GoodReads widgets too, but the tangible books feel more special.

I wound up reading something else first. Is there a way to delete a point on the Travellerspoint map?

message 39: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 17 comments Sho wrote: "I wound up reading something else first. Is there a way to delete a point on the Travellerspoint map?"
Yes. You can either right click on the place you want to delete and then delete it. Or you can insert a new point before it and that way you get to keep your original choice in the list.

message 40: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks!

message 41: by Chieko (new)

Chieko (cminnow) | 18 comments Very cool tool. My Mom, sisters, friends and I (six of us so far) decided to follow the same route but we may choose different books as we go.

Here's our route. http://www.travellerspoint.com/member...

message 42: by Gussie (last edited Dec 23, 2011 02:04AM) (new)

Gussie (a_reader_1) | 68 comments This is such a brilliant idea! I'm going to follow the popular drunken sailor route too. For company, I've decided to adopt an imaginary turquoise parrot with a magenta beak (it's imaginary - so I get to pick its colours) called Jean-Michel Robespierre. He is 'mon chouchou' when he is good, and 'Jean-Michel' when he starts to behave like his revolutionary namesake and needs to be threatened with the guillotine.

Now, I shall go and map my journey based on the availability of 'Old Monk' at each port.

message 43: by Parsa (new)

Parsa | 101 comments I want to go reading as I please, choosing destinations as go along. This is making me confused as to how should I go with the map. Can I choose to update as I go along? :/

message 44: by Preethi (new)

Preethi (scarletohhara) | 29 comments Am going to do Read-As-You-Please. So I might be in Spain one week and Peru the next, Bostwana the next ... :)

message 45: by [deleted user] (new)

And you can add to the map as you go.

message 46: by Shomeret (new)

Shomeret | 520 comments I started a Travelerspoint map with the places I've already been for this challenge and my route looks like a whale. It's very cool!

message 47: by Mikki (new)

Mikki I'm just going to add destinations as I go along and makes changes if necessary (book, country)--no real itinerary going on here!

Me and "mon chouchou" say merci. :-D We've started our journey too and mapped some of it already.

message 50: by Anne (new)

Anne (reachannereach) I have no itinerary either. I know that I'm starting in England. After that I'll travel based on my mood or group reads.
