I just got done with the first 2 chapters & it's pretty slow so far. It's kind of creepy how both of them got a book that was blank with a Dracula picture in the middle. Brrrr. I have a feeling I won't get to the good stuff for a while though.
I read this book maybe about a month ago... I also found the beginning to be slow and the layering with the past and present a little bit distracting cuz when they got to be interesting and gained some pace, it changed again and stopped! It really frustrated me...But the second part of the book I found was a much better read but I have to say that it didn't do it for me (scary-ness-wise) but then again I didn't find Dracula to be scary either.
Whew... this is still slow so far. But I have high hopes! =) Is anyone else reading it?
I read this book when it first came out, it was a slow starter for me as well, but it soon became one I couldn't put down. Or rather, I could put it down, but I picked it up again almost instantly. I really enjoyed it.
I'm about halfway through. I also had problems in the early goings with all of the changing of narrators...I was confused if it was the girl or her father or a young Rossi telling the story. But as the pieces keep dropping into place (and there are just the two narrators to follow) I'm starting to pick up speed. I don't know what page you're on, Lauren, but keep with it! I'm just started Chapter 44 and I'm getting hooked!!
I started reading The Historian this afternoon.
I am not usually a fan of the Vampire genre but I am finding this story and the style intriguing. I am around pg 100 and so far I am not having difficulty with the change of narrators but I am anticipating a little action soon.

I don't get into a lot of vampire stories but sometimes I do enjoy a book that scares me a little. I keep holding my breath waiting for the action to start.
I finished the Historian last night. As I stated before i am not a fan of this genre, but I did enjoy this book. This is less an action thriller than an intellectual triller. It is extremely well written and does hold ones attention. I enjoyed the history of the Balkin's included in the story line. Not an area I know much about. Excellent novel!
It's been a couple of years since I read The Historian, but I simply loved it. It had great layers to it. I thought the suspense factor was well played and the writing just mesmerizing.
I read this a while ago and loved it. I like the history, love stories and all the interesting people combined with vampires. It's a great book.
I just started it a few days ago and I am not really sure what to think of it right now...It's so heavy to hold lol it's hard to read. I got it from the library and the only copy they had was hard cover large print.So there 1000 pages instead of the 600 or 700 of the soft cover.

I read this book last year, and I loved it. I personally never felt it was slow at all. Bram Stoker's "Dracula" completely and utterly rocked my world--it was hypnotic, terrifying, and insanely real to me. "The Historian" invoked the same morbid fascination with Dracula, and other terrors that have come out of Eastern European history. I couldn't put it down.
I read this last year also and really enjoyed it. I thought a few parts were a little slow, but I'm not a huge history buff. I loved their story and the descriptions of the area. It definitely picked up a lot the further along I got.
I read this book last year and loved it. It is elegantly written. The descriptions were wonderful. I felt as I were in the pages of this book and experiencing what the unnamed narrator was experiencing. Speaking of which, why do you suppose the narrator remained unnamed? I like to think that it was to further involve me and draw me into the story because I could have been the unnamed narrator.
I finished this book in January. I am not too sure about the whole vampire thing. I have to say I didnt like the fact that it changed point of views so quickly. Just as it was getting good, guess what, now we are hearing it from this point of view now. It kind of made me loose interest. I was a little confused about the ending. In my opinion, it was an okay book.

I really liked this book when I read it back in '08. The descriptions and writing was very well done. At times the book gave me the creeps ^_^, but overall I thought it was really good. I liked the mystery behind the un-named narrator. The ending gave me mixed feelings. On one hand, I liked that it doesn't have this perfect ending were everything is solved and everyone is happy. However, I also was a little annoyed that it switched point of view and that the ending leaves the reader in a cliffhanger. Overall I throughly enjoyed the book and highly recommend!

The book really sucks you in and you can visualize what is happening.
