How many new books will you need to get?
Something like seven or eight titles. I specifically aimed at titles that have gone from under copyright and can be gotten for free. I also own a large chunk of the books already.
omigosh this is a good question! haha! i have no idea, in part because i belong to a couple of groups that read from certain regions of the world so i am waiting to see what we choose to read and apply them here. so i have several TBDs in my list (which is far from complete in any case!!) and i may or may not have to buy them. i expect to borrow a lot from libraries. :D
I've got all of mine because I'm already doing a world challenge. I bought about 150 books for it over the last few years. It was cool to order from places like Amazon.fr (for some Francophone African countries) and the University of the South Pacific (in Fiji) for Oceania. A person should have a few books that cost less than their shipping charge.
I'm getting a bunch of mine from Paperbackswap.com - love that site!

I think I have around 36 so far, so I'm not concerned. I'm still commited o trying to buy everything used.
My goal is not to buy ANY new books for the challenge. I have some from my list on the shelves already and a few can be read as copyright free e-books. The rest I plan to borrow from the library. I already own thousands of books and need to stop buying them - I've already run out of room for bookcases :(
I need 20 books. Hopefully I can found those at library sales. Do we need to read novels for the challenge? Can we read short stories, or poetry?

It is up to you, and might give you a break in the routine or be a quicker read some months. I know I have both on my list, as well as some non-fiction.

I'm reading a selection of novels, memoirs and short stories in order to mix it up a bit..
I want about 9 more, but actually don't need any. I have books here that I could use if necessary but they are authors that I've already read; for the challenge. I was aiming to read new authors.

I am so behind. I still have 45 books to get. However, I am banking on Christmas:-). I usually get a few gift cards for books. I have also given myself a 4 book a month allowance so I should be okay. I have also found a website call The Book Depository that I think is based in Guernsey. It has a few of the books on my list not yet available in the US at a relatively good price.
Wonderful! I just picked up a book at my local library sale (for free!!) "Adventures in World Literature". All of the stories, poems etc are organized by country/nationality, classic or modern. Now I can use this book if I get stuck.
So far in my world challenge I've read novels, poetry, plays, history, natural history, politics, culture, essays, field guides, travel guides, memoirs, young adult novels, and kids' books. If I hadn't read for some countries already, I could add graphic novels to the heap.
I need about 20, but I'm buying the kindle versions, so hopefully they will be a little cheaper. I'm relying on having Amazon gift vouchers for xmas and my birthday in March to get me through.

I'm a book hoarder as well:) When I moved to a smaller place I had to get rid of a lot of books. I'm lucky enough to have 3 large used bookstores in my area. So, when I traded in some of my books to downsize I ended up with 250.00 in trade credit :) So, I get all my books there...after reading I keep the ones I want and trade the others back in.

I'm collecting my books for this challenge so I can see them all together, like a family reunion. Then I will only keep those I truly loved, and in 2013 will swap the rest of the bastard stepchildren away for shiny different books.
I persuaded my husband to make one room of our house a library (books + the 2 computers and a desk....), but I've sort of expanded a little, a shelf in the guest room - good if guests can't sleep! - and a few piles in the bedroom (HEY! I'm reading those!! :-))I'm not sure he hasn't seen right through me, but he hasn't discovered the stacks under the sofa (it's so clever, dog toys and our childrens stuff never disappear under there anymore :-)
I can't say we abound in space, but I don't see why one can't line the walls of one's salon with bookcases. Most families here have at least one wall of books anyway - mostly Jewish texts and Talmud and such - so I just have some more.
We used to move a lot when we were earlier in our marriage and careers, so I never kept books since we were always having to pack and move everything (that makes you keep everything light!). One day not that long ago, he looked around in horror and said, "I never intended to live in a house dominated by books." My response was, "You can move out if you want!" :P

It appears to be something of an ever-exponential progression. When we finally acquire a house, I should try for a dedicated library.

Self diagnosed book hoarder here. I'm glad I'm not alone. Although I'm doing better in my recovery by focusing on used books and trading/recyling. ;)
Kristen have you found Bookcrossing yet? It is good for getting me to move my books on when I am done with them. Still have a house overflowing with books.
I think I'll only need to buy a couple or so, made sure that I depleted my TBR pile as much as possible. I should also be able to get quite a few books from libraries.
Looks like I'm the only one doing the challenge on a Kindle. I still have lots of 'real' books, but they are all non-fiction,(I like to make notes in the margins sometimes). I used to get most of my fiction from the library anyway; and that will be my first port of call if I can't get a title on kindle.Perhaps some of you could trade books if you are reading the same stories?
Ah, that's good, I'm not alone then. I do like real books as well, but I love the convenience of my kindle :-)

Not everything is available on kindle and I have a lot of books that have been sitting on my shelves at home for a long time. I want to get through some of those.

The library in my hometown isn't extensive enough unless I only want to read travelogues. I think I had to get about 35, but I'm on my way there. And I've put some on my wishlist for Christmas ;).
I have alot of books so I may not need to get too many.
Probably about 35. Fortunately some of them will be e-books, which keeps the cost down.

Yes, for all my books I do a Kindle and used book store search first then order them from Amazon as a last resort. There is a large gap in the 1950's and 1960's for overseas literature classics with a corresponding gaping hole in the Kindle archives so if you are like me, and reading literature classics from all time periods and many countries, ordering from a large site, if not otherwise available including the library, is the way to go.

I managed to find 40 of the 52 titles amongst the books I already own - so I'll "only" need to get 12 new ones. I've ordered three and will probably buy the rest in December and January.
So many great literary master pieces are either totally depressing - although I often agree that they are important and well written - or require a lot of their reader, so I've tried to add a few graphic novels and light reads too :-)
How about the rest of you? What were you reasons to choose the way you did?
