It's a hint, Roland <.<

message 1355: by Laurel (new)

Laurel No hating - I just answered your e-mail.

I'm getting ready for about 12 people to invade my place for Christmas dinner. I'm a bit distracted ;)

message 1356: by [deleted user] (new)

It's ok, Ron.

I'll hate you instead.

Also, up the street not across it. Geeze.

message 1357: by [deleted user] (new)

i'm west coast, man.

It's only 7:30 here.

Way to make a girl feel welcome, Ron!

Whur'd I put mah guns?

message 1359: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments It'll be over soon at least. ;)

Christmas-time puts me in a bad mood too. So much irritation. The bell-ringers, the shopping mobs, the greediness, the holier-than-thouness, the arguments over PC greetings and shit...

It's just annoying. Being an adult has taken all the fun out of the holidays.

Becky wrote: "It's just annoying. Being an adult has taken all the fun out of the holidays. "

Not for me. i'll still have as much fun as when I was a kid, just now I can have alcohol too :P

No, I just meant that's why I get in a pissy mood this time of year.

I don't know your situation, but I hope January is better for you.

Oh... Well, whatevs. You're bringing the booze, right?

message 1366: by [deleted user] (new)

Bring it, buy it, make it. I dunno.

I just know that there will be booze

We shall have Whisquila. That is all I know for sure :P

message 1369: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Blueberry ale sounds iffy... I'm not much for blueberries in general, unless they are in muffins. Ale...? I dunno if I'm that brave. O_o

What else you got?

message 1370: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Well dammit. Now I want blueberry muffins.

message 1371: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 1894 comments Perhaps... Though I don't know anyone in Michigan besides Dawn and Eminem, and I don't think either of them are brewing any up at the moment. I'll ask though. ;)

I might check around to see if there are any bottled kinds imported here. There are a bunch of stores that have unique beers and the like around here.

Ala, I totally know some legit bootleggers here in Arkansas. All purpose moonshine that can get you hammered, dissolve paint and fuel your vehicle.

Also, there will be much Whisquila to be had. Dawn will bring wine, Nicki the rum and Becky beer. I have four extra bedrooms and a new 73 inch tv. We got this

Laurel I just finished Hounded and really enjoyed it! I read someone compared it to Harry Dresden. I can see the link.

I also highly recommend the Monster Hunter International series. Can't wait for the Omnibus to be released!

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 200 comments well the short-lived and now closed Feedback thread was recently forwarded to me and i have to say that i really appreciate that effort, despite that thread's sad end. a little while ago i left this group in irritation but am realizing now that i have had some enjoyable times here, have read a lot of good books because of this group, and have also read some really interesting opinions.

plus i am starstruck by moderator Brad's Big Brain, he's one of my favorite GR friends. if you have't read Brad's reviews, do yourself a solid and read them, they are fun & smart & incredibly endearing.

okay so i'm just going to go ahead and answer some of those Feedback Thread questions:

1) What don't you like about the group?

as with all groups, i have two personal bugaboos and one major stopping point. the two personal things are homophobic comments and 'coded' racist comments. maybe because i'm a bi and of mongrel-race descent.

the first (homophobic comments) happens surprisingly often in GR. the second (coded racist comments) also happens, but happily is a rare occurrence and i've never seen it in here.

my major stopping point, what really flips me out and turns me into a rude, unreasonable person, and which is probably obvious to anyone who's known me during the years i've been on GR:

GANGING UP ON A PERSON. i fucking hate that! i don't care if that person is an ignoramus or is a constant naysayer or just seems to enjoy being a pain in the ass for whatever reason. i especially hate it when it is a new member and other members see fit to condescend to them, to start talking about that new member's bookshelves and what they've read and what they haven't read and what that supposedly means about them.

but most of all, when folks start mocking someone en masse, when they post jokes about them, when they post images about them, when they make fun of how they talk, AND WHEN THIS IS ALL DONE BY MULTIPLE PEOPLE TO ONE PERSON, NO MATTER HOW IRRITATING THAT PERSON IS... i just see red. i don't know why this effects me so deeply. maybe because i bullied other kids when i was kid and i'm now over-compensating. who knows. but i hate it so much. i just don't get why folks can't ignore people who annoy them. fuckin a, i do it all the time in real life, it's not that hard. i just don't understand the pleasure & fun folks get when they join together to mock a single person.

(view spoiler)

oh here's another thing, much more minor: members who vote for a book in a group read but then don't ever post thoughts on that book in the group read thread. why even bother to vote? but that's a problem in all groups i suppose.

2) What do you like about the group?

i love the group read choices.

i like the thought that folks usually put into discussions about various group reads.

the most active members of this group are also obviously highly intelligent. and fun, and sociable. i love that.

i like a fun, social environment where folks can talk about their lives, joke around, mess with each other, post links, etc. even though i don't post that much, i do end up reading nearly every thread of each group that i'm a member. eventually. i like reading about books, but i also like reading about the people who read those books.

3) How do you think this group should be run?

loose, social, personal, casual.

but i do think moderators need to take a firm hand when it comes to internet bullying and extended, personal, back-and-forth attack sessions. seriously.

6) Anything else you want to say?

this group and GR in general has a lot of intelligent, well-read, interesting members. and this group in particular is sort of the central locale for SciFi & Fantasy. i want it to be a good group. and for the most part, it has been. this group has a lot of smart & down to earth people in it, and i like being around those kinds of folks.

We appreciate any and all feedback, mark, particularly from group members. Does this mean we can actually welcome you back? Comment & runs get pretty frustrating.

message 1399: by mark (new)

mark monday (majestic-plural) | 200 comments Nicki, come on. i don't ignore bullying. even if it is not what YOU construe as bullying. i DO believe in accountability. i also believe that it is incredibly foul for a group of people to gang up on an individual. that shit is just gross to me. it is one thing to challenge a person's opinion, it is entirely another thing for multiple people to jump down that person's throat, make fun of how they talk or look or whatever. that is textbook bullying, plain & simple. you are a reasonable and, clearly, a highly intelligent person. surely you see my point, at least in some way? please try, please! as the song goes, ain't too proud to beg here. i really want you to understand where i'm coming from.

and as far as the 'irony' you mention in your first sentence... well, that is a good point. but i can't ignore things when it is done by a group. i just can't.

glad you enjoyed the Mean Girls moniker! somehow i knew you and others would.

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 889 comments I both laughed at and agreed with Nicki's statement.

Disclaimer: This does not mean that I am ganging up on anyone or being a buille. I simply agreed with her and found her amusing. Nothing to read into...
