Patrick Whitehurst | 9 comments Hi everyone! I am an avid reader and fan of pulps of all sorts. Besides classics (lately reading old pulps of 'The Spider'), I'm also a fan of 70s and 80s serial fiction similar in style to the old school stuff: the Dirty Harry Man of Action books, Destroyer, etc., definitely a fan of books designed for adventure and thrills over critical praise and awards.

Welcome to the group, Patrick.
Several of our members have enjoyed Blood & Tacos # 1, a homage to the men's adventure books of those decades. Sounds like you might like them as well. You can read for free here - http://www.bloodandtacos.com/issue-1-...

Samantha Glasser | 59 comments Hey guys, I'm Samantha from Columbus, Ohio. I got into reading pulp novels because of my love of old movies and film noir. I started out with Michael Shayne books and Raymond Chandler and branched out from there.

I'm wondering what you consider pulp here. Is it just detective/crime stories or do you lump in all serialized stories in pulp magazines? I'm thinking of Edgar Rice Burroughs and some of the sci-fi stories.

We focus on the crime aspects; hardboiled and noir

Mike Shayne is a forgotten noir hero, but I guess you can blame his author for allowing other people to write under his pseudonym. Those later ones just aren't the same.

message 211: by Patrick (new)

Patrick Whitehurst | 9 comments Never heard of Michael Shayne. Now I feel like I'm missing something! I've been reading Ross Macdonald and Spillane quite a bit lately.

Right on. The later Shayne books are almost unreadable even though they have delightfully cheesey photo covers.

message 213: by Carl (new)

Carl Hi my name is Carl and I am a big fan of the Spenser novels, the only other Parker books I've read are the westerns featuring Everett Cole, there are only four of these but they are fantastic.

Dave Newell (davenewell) | 1 comments Just wanted to say hi to all! I'm really excited to read the recommendations you have mentioned on here. I've finished reading what I can find so far of Dashiel Hammett and Raymond Chandler. I'm looking for more stories like theirs!

message 218: by Jed (new)

Jed Power | 6 comments I am only mentioning my novel in this introduction to explain my deep interest in Noir. I hope it is ok. My name is Jed Power. My new crime novel is "The Boss of Hampton Beach." My bartender protagonist is named Dan Marlowe. The real Dan Marlowe was my father's best friend and wrote his masterpiece, "The Name of the Game is Death," while living with my family. He named a character after me. I've returned the honor. The second in the Dan Marlowe series, "Hampton Beach Homicide" will be out in November.

Brendon (thebeatmodnrocker) | 1 comments Hey, so many authors I like seemed to connect to this page I thought I should join in and pick up some great new reading tips. I'm from New Zealand and I have to give a plug to a dark and nasty little novel "The Scarecrow" by the excellent local writer Ronald Hugh Morrieson. Opening line is one of the best I've ever read:

"The same week our fowls were stolen, Daphne Moran had her throat slit"

it's your typical small town tale of incest and necrophillia. Best of all this is typically assigned in NZ high school English classes when you're 16! Not sure how available it is in the USA, but if you can track a copy down you'll have a great read in store.

Thad Brown I'm Thad Brown, from the U.S., newly joined in this group though I've been on Goodreads for awhile. To be honest, I do most of my posting about my reading here on Goodreads under my real name; "Thad Brown" is the pen name I use for writing my (clean!) "girls-with-guns" crime fiction stories. So as Thad, I most likely won't post much here. But if you all will have me on those terms, I'll be a faithful lurker, read the discussions, and hopefully vote to like some of your reviews!

message 225: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (xitomatl) | 16 comments Hi everybody - Kelly from BC, Canada. I've been on Good Reads for about four years, but just finally got around to joining a few groups over the weekend. Before I could even read I'd watch film noir on my dad's knee (and Doctor Who), so one might say I was instilled with a love of noir/pulp/hard boiled detective fiction from a young age.

I'm looking forward to chatting with some like-minded folks and getting some excellent recommendations from you folks!

Hi from Bangkok, Thailand.
I like Chandler and Hammemt and the noir detective style. I am also a big fan of James Hadley Chase for his skill with plot.
I also write pulp fiction, but am not here to promote myself or anything like that. Just looking for new books to enjoy.

Craig Buck (craig_faustus_buck) | 9 comments Hi All,

I've toiled most of my career in episodic TV writing including mysteries like Simon and Simon and Magnum P.I. and the scifi miniseries V: The Final Battle.

Now I write noir. My agent's trying to sell my first novel, Go Down Hard, and I'm halfway through the second, Go Down Screaming.

I've got a short story up on Amazon if anyone wants to get it for their Kindle, or I'd be happy to send the PDF to anyone in this group for free if you subscribe to my blog at CraigFaustusBuck.com and send me a note to remind me.

If you do subscribe, don't worry about being overloaded. I'm one of those lazy bloggers who gets around to posting something once every two or three months.

Cheers,

Craig Faustus Buck

Guillermo Galvan | 10 comments Hello Noir people,

My name is Ismael "Ish," nice to meet you all. Noir is one of my favorite genres. It seems like the influence has always been around me since I was a kid but I never actually noticed it until my late 20's. Since this realization, I've been grabbing classic titles like crazy; Chandler, Cain, Hammett, and the rest of the giants.

Charles Bukowski is one of my all time favorites. I've read almost all his books. I'm not sure if he's completely welcomed into the school of hard boiled, but his writing has that tough, solitary feeling that I think qualifies him. I hope to start some threads on his writing.

I joined because I want to make friends who like Noir, and add all the gems to my "to-read" list. Also I'm very interested in learning about musicians who got that Noir style. Movies, art, everything, I want to hear about it.

I wrote my first book. It's not Noir work but it definitely has those elements. More of a bizarre tale filled with violence and absurd comedy. If there are any reviewers out there, please get at me.

Feel free to friend me!

message 240: by Guy (new)

Guy Hello: Just looking at the title of the current read (Brett Halliday) tells me I want to be here. I'm a fan of noir fiction, pulp and vintage crime. Just bought a vintage copy of Meanwhile Back at the Morgue by Mike Avallone. Recently finished James M. Cain's The Cocktail Waitress.

Axel Howerton (axelhow) | 3 comments Howdy. The name's Axel Howerton. I am an author, mainly "crime", and I'll leave it at that. Hit up my profile for more info, if you're so inclined. I'm an avowed Pulp addict. From the Black Mask days to new masters like Dutch Leonard and James Ellroy, and all points in-between. IMHO Hammett created the genre and stands forever atop the bloody pile.

Glad to be here, hope to find some new pals and some new writers to indulge in.

message 248: by Dianne (new)

Dianne | 1 comments Hello - I see by the dates above that no one posts here frequently, but I thought I would introduce myself and the type of crime novels that I love. I grew up reading Mickey Spillane (Mike Hammer) and Sydney Sheldon (can't remember author's name) detective novels, but I also enjoy original Robert Ludlum, Alistair MacLean, Stephen King and many other genres. Probably dated myself with the first two mentions though LOL!

Tristan (tristanvm) | 1 comments Hey people - I'm a Belgium-based devotee of all things noir. I have to come clean by saying that I haven't read that much of the genre, but I do know a thing or two about the genre in the filmmedium. Right now I'm wading through some short story collections featuring the classics of the genre and I've bought the gorgeous Library of America box set containing some essential novels from the 30's, 40's and 50's. It's been one hell of a ride so far. Looking forward to reading more and discussing them with you fine folks. Cheerio!
