It's a pity school isn't engaging enough to make this unnecessary. (I did the same and the teachers never complained because it wasn't disruptive and I passed everything.) Got a lot of good books read but a better education would have been preferable.

Elizabeth Kirke (morethanmagic) | 41 comments My favorite place to read is the bathtub. No joke. I've been known to get absorbed in a book and stay in the tub until the water gets too cold. It's not unusual for me to drain it, fill it back up, and then keep reading.

There's an amaaaaazing store called Lush that sells bath bombs and stuff. If I have a brand new book that I've been coveting for a while, I'll get a bomb from lush and treat myself to a spa bath while reading.

Tragically, the occasional book has slipped into the water, so I'm afraid to take an e-reader in.

message 54: by Byron (new)

Byron (byft) Haha. Elizabeth I rent and don't have a bath here but everytime I baby sit a friends house (4 legged kids) I grab bubble bath and read in the bath. One of my friends even buys me stuff from lush when I house sit. It's awesome.

Not sure on the dropping books though. ~shudders~ i am very careful about water and books.

My friend, Sara, likes to read in the tub too and that's one reason why she won't get an ereader either.

a lot of time in the changing rooms. Books are a necessity, I dedicate a bag to books when I'm going out of the city.

I don't have a favorite reading place, actually. Anywhere is great as long as my Kindle is fully charged, and I have a nice hot cup of tea next to me.

Regular books in bed or paperbacks to the hot tub, but that is fir PBs that have been, shall we say, well read and aren't perfect anymore in case they get wet.

I'm all in favor of pillows and tea (although for me the question really should be "where don't you read?" with the answer being "just at work, mostly..." )

message 77: by Iamshadow (new)

Iamshadow | 334 comments In a word - everywhere. I read on my laptop, my phone and in physical copies. I read while I watch TV, on the toilet, in the bath, and in bed. I read in public, in private, in the car, on the train, on the bus and if I could reliably read on foot without walking into things I'd do that too. :) I have several thousand physical books, a Scribd subscription, and always at least one book on loan from my excellent local library. I use the Scribd app, the Libby app for Overdrive, Freda+ and Calibre for my digital books. In my youth I was a chronic dog earer of corners, but in my adulthood I use bookmarks. These can be actual bookmarks, receipts, scraps of yarn, envelopes or toilet paper squares. I love the convenience of digital, but I love having a physical copy to hold in my hands. I love matching covers in series. I used to love paperbacks but I'm a born again hardcover lover. They hold up better over time and look great on my shelves.

Isabelle Jay (cheoljay) | 7 comments I try to read whenever I can, for example right now I read when it's slow at work. Helps that I work at a library so no one really cares if I sit and read by the desk. Only need to look up whenever someone comes in and put the book away if they need any help.

Else I like just sitting on a sofa and read. I don't really like sitting outside to read.

I'd love to work in libraries. It was the plan - disability got in the way. Maybe some day. That, or a bookshop.

I'm normally on the sofa, that's my comfy place, but every now and then, often first thing in the morning, there's something about sitting out on the deck in the hanging chair with a cup of tea and a book... :)

Working in a library is very fun, even if I work in a smaller village and not as much people as in other libraries. Best thing is that I get time to read ^^'

I was a library monitor grades 7-12, and my mother has been a librarian at a primary school for over twenty years. I get called in to help when she needs to move shelving, re-catalogue or do stocktake. Shelving properly makes me happy. I like covering, too. :)

message 82: by Rez (new)

Rez Delnava (rez_delnava) I wish I could read at work (I also work at a small-town library). There's parts of the day when all three of the computers at the loan desk are manned and concurrently engaged in reference or RA. And even when I do get a quiet moment, I can't read because I'm too tall to lean comfortably against the the counter-height desk. 😭

Right now my only reading spot is in bed. My papasan chair got put in storage while I'm relocating.

message 85: by Meyer (new)

Meyer | 14 comments Everywhere is my favourite place.

When I lived in London and worked in the city I would read on the tube on the way to work. Almost every day I would miss my stop and end up having to trace my way back. I would look up midway and think "pay attention, it's not long till your stop" and then look up again to find myself in East London.

When I am at home it's on the couch or when I lived with my parents in my favourite armchair, coffee in near reach.

I love reading in airports and on planes, but this is something I don't get to indulge in very often.

When it comes to writing, it's has to be somewhere that no one will speak to me, however it doesn't have to be a quiet place. I enjoy writing in coffee shops, in my office before work starts, in parks etc.

This is a great thread btw.

Whitetiger01 | 15 comments Well, when I was in Singapore I loved to read my books while listening to some chill mix by the swimming pool in the condo where I lived. Then, when I moved back to Indonesia I preferred reading my books in my dad’s study room. I usually called that room his ‘office’ because that was what he always referred to. I did the same thing as well. Reading while listening to some jazz and chill mix.

I actually love music so much that it can distract me from my reading haha, so I don't mind background noise but it has to be uninteresting background noise. The best is in a busy place where everyone speaks a language which is not your first language. Sometimes I read in a coffee shop in Jerusalem and I can ignore everything around me because Hebrew is by no means my first or even second language, it's my third, so it doesn't distract me.

Reading by the pool on holiday is amazing though - I love that too!

message 88: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17365 comments I can't listen to music and read. Or rather, I can, but I fall into the book and don't even hear the music until it stops, so that's kind of a waste of electrons. :)

message 89: by Whitetiger01 (new)

Whitetiger01 | 15 comments Yeah, the music is only for background sound and most of the time I don’t really focus on the music. The songs make me focus better because I’m more calm and relaxed, also it’s not completely quiet. Cause I hate total silence sometimes.

Iamshadow | 334 comments Whitetiger01 wrote: "Yeah, the music is only for background sound and most of the time I don’t really focus on the music. The songs make me focus better because I’m more calm and relaxed, also it’s not completely quiet..."

I don't tend to listen to songs with much distracting stuff going on, or it means I can't focus on the words of what I'm trying to read, but certain kinds of music are great. I know I used to listen to Teardrop by Massive Attack on repeat when in high school (showing my age, here) but lately, I've really enjoyed putting on the ten hour version of Weightless by Marconi Union. It's on Youtube, and it's specifically designed to help with anxiety, so if you're an anxious person like me and have anything like hypervigilence or PTSD, you should check it out. I really find my anxiety anchoring on to random sounds and phantom smells, so having a continuous non-threatening sensory input helps calm that down and focus my anxious, ADHD brain and actually get reading or closing tabs or whatever done. It's absolutely safe for people of all ages, because it's just instrumental, no words, the only advisory is you're not meant to listen to it while driving because it can make some people sleepy (never does, me, just makes me less climbing the walls).

message 91: by K.S. (new)

K.S. Trenten (cauldronkeeper) | 137 comments I still read before I go to bed, but when I'm almost finished with a book, I'm starting to complete it while sitting at the kitchen table with a notebook standing by, so I can write a rough draft of a review while my impressions of the book are fresh.

message 93: by Lucia (new)

Lucia Rukia | 4 comments With me, It is on my bed with my cat next by my side. And of cause with musics turn on . I don't care about the songs, I just need a suitable melody to maintain my feeling flow, to get lost in books. Goodness, that feeling is so divine.

message 94: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17365 comments Whereas if I'm reading I don't hear any background sounds. I couldn't tell you if there was music or not. I do like having my little dog there, though (even if he sometimes snores. If the book is good enough, I don't hear that either.) :)
