Jan Hurst-Nicholson (the pitfalls and pratfalls of being an author)
Glad you've found us, Jan! I feel I should spread some newspaper around in your thread what with the dogs n all. ;)
Do have a look around and enjoy the silliness in our group. I'm sure you'll be having visitors popping in to your thread, too.
Enjoy!
Just off to look at your book links now. Thanks!
Hi Jan - I loved But Can You Drink The Water?, I actually did laugh out loud in places - my favourite scene of all was the safari park trip with the grandparents, hillarious!!
:0)
:0)
Thanks so much. Thrilled that Philip (sarah) has bought my book , and that it made Karen laugh. I'm still waiting for someone to make it into a sit-com :) (that's how it started)
Can you change the title of your thread? Sadly, as of this morning, I am now personal chef to only 2 picky cats :(
I feel for you Jan.My beloved spaniel Molly had to be put to sleep yesterday and I am just heart broken.Sending hugs.
@Philip (sarah)Thanks. My condolences to you. It's difficult judging when it's 'time'. She was 15 yrs old, so had a good innings.
Condolences to both Jan and Sarah. It's a horrible feeling losing a pet. I lost both my dogs within a few months of each other (they were 12 and 13). I lived alone at the time and they were both my constant companions. When I lost the second one so close to losing the first I ended up having to take a few days off work because I was so heart broken. Lucky for me I had worked there for a long time and my employers were understanding about it. Sadly, not everyone is sympathetic over the loss of a pet :(
@Jan, as an animal lover I feel for you. As my vet once said to me on one occasion as he escorted me out of the tradesmans entrance to avoid upsetting his other clients with my whimpering :It is the last act of kindness you can extend to your much loved pet and you should be proud that you gave your pet the best life possible and knew when it was time to say goodbye.
@ SimonIt is the last act of kindness you can extend to your much loved pet and you should be proud that you gave your pet the best life possible and knew when it was time to say goodbye.
Wise words.
As someone said, "Your pets will all be waiting for you on the rainbow bridge." I always think of that when I see a rainbow.
I'm the same with a budgie or a chicken. People think it's strange taking a chicken to the vets. Sometimes they get better but sometimes they don't and just because they are usually farmyard birds doesn't mean we shouldn't do our best for them.Sorry to those who've had recent losses. They become part of our lives don't they?
In case you missed it on the other thread, for a limited time I'm offering a FREE prc of Leon Chameleon P.I. and the Case of the Missing Canary Eggs
This can be read on a Kindle (and possibly other devices - sorry, I'm a e-reader thickie)
As holiday time is closing in I hope it's ok to give this a bump to mention that if you're travelling you might need Something to Read on the Plane
Print copies also available on Amazon:o)
Silly Jan! This is your home in the group! You can do anything you like in your thread. It's lovely to see you, too. :)
Thanks Patti - that's good to know :o)V pleased to get an order for 30 print copies of
Something to Read on the Plane from our local King Shaka airport. But fed up that they faxed the order on 31st October and I didn't get it! Only discovered the order when I phoned them this afternoon.
Thanks for the prod :)Too many irons in the fire at the moment! Trying to sort out getting out of paying the US tax on my Kindle Books.
The good news is that I just got an order for 15 paperbacks from Cape Town airport and I posted them today. Will now have to phone King Shaka airport again (have put it in my diary).
I've been reading David Gaughran's instructions on how to get an EIN via telephone. Makes a lot of sense and circumvents so many forms. Just trying to find the number for South Africa :(
Just dropping by to let you know I'm doing a Giveaway of five paperbacks of Leon Chameleon P.I. and the Case of the Kidnapped Mouse
Giveaway ends on 8th April. Hope you'll take the opportunity to enter (especially if you have young children or grandchildren).
Seems I've been a bit tardy updating this thread.Have two new books to add.

Every school deserves a hero – especially St Mary’s …
A no-nonsense former US naval officer takes on the undisciplined teens in a prestigious British school, but faces his greatest challenge managing the aggrieved female teachers.
The girls at St Mary's Academy in northern England are becoming unruly. A quick fix is needed and the governing body controversially appoints Adam Wild, former US naval officer and widower, as the new headmaster. The all-female staff resent him for upsetting their group dynamics, and his new strict rules set him on a collision course with the sullen teenage girls.
His mission to reform the troubled school is undermined by a power struggle with the fiercely ambitious and popular teacher Jenna Murray, who feels the position should have been hers. The students hate the upheaval, seeking to manipulate or embarrass him in ways only girls can. And his digging into the root of the problems threatens to pull too many dark secrets and scandals into the light.
Hurt by fresh reminders of his tragic past, Adam's determination is tested daily along with his authority. But his patience is enough to win a few allies, and his firm, self-assured presence brings a stability the school hasn't seen in years. Overcoming years of dysfunction may not be impossible - if he can last at St Mary's long enough to see it through.
I'm doing a COUNTDOWN on The Breadwinners: A Family Saga
It will be 99 p until 17th June. Hope you will be enticed to give it a try :)http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0...
Thrilled to have a new cover for But Can You Drink the Water? (Droll, witty and utterly British).
Now getting ready for the print version.
The print version is now published :) But Amazon have not linked it with the e-book version and it's ended up in the 'environmental' genre on Amazon.com :( *sigh* Now awaiting reply from KDP as to what happened.
They'll get it sorted, Jan. My first book wasn't linked to the eBook for about a week. It looks as if you have no reviews!
Yes - the missing reviews! I've got 64 in the UK. I'm impatient to announce the launch of the paperback and don't want to do it until everything is in place. I guess I'll just have to learn patience :)
Had a reply from KDP saying they have linked the e-book and print versions - but it might take 48 hours to show up, and five days to get the reviews added. More patience required. Considering I have waited at least a year to see my trad published books in print you'd think I could wait a few days :)
Hurrah, print and e-book now linked - and I've had the first sale of the paperback version :)

This review is from: But Can You Drink The Water? (Droll, witty, and utterly British) (Kindle Edition)
One word describes this book BRILLIANT. Obvious that the Author Emigrated from UK to RSA. I and my family left Liverpool same as the Author for RSA also in the 70s.Every situation, Every Page related to EXACTLY what happened to ourselves as the Author experienced, even down to when we returned to the UK on Holiday. Both the Wife and I shed tears of Laughter. It brought back many memories. We also had the Wife's Parents out on Holiday and once again we relived the humour and wIt. Even down to the MELBA TOAST. EXCELLENT and once again BRILLIANT. A MUST FOR EVERY Ex Pat to South Africa to read
Gingerlily - Elephant Philosopher wrote: "That was a very nice review Jan :) They couldn't have matched the book better!"Thanks. I was thrilled with the review, especially knowing that they recognised the characters and situations.
