Ellen (karenvirginiaflaxman) | 115 comments I was checking this book out on Goodreads, but didn't see a hardback edition. I checked at Amazon, found the hardback, and did a search for it on Goodreads using the ISBN-13 and ISBN-10 numbers. Goodreads brought up the paperback edition! Is it possible for a publisher to use the same ISBNs for both the hardback and paperback editions? If so, how would I add the hardback to Goodreads; it currently doesn't show up on the Goodreads editions page. Thanks.

Paula (paulaan) | 7014 comments It is possible for both to share ISBN's

You need to add a new edition as per the alternative cover instructions.

Add the ISBN to the description field with a comment along the lines of ISBN shared by paperback and hardback

Actually, Scott, I don't own this book. I wanted to add it to my to-read shelf here on Goodreads and so looked for the hardcopy. I prefer to read the hardback edition rather than the paperback version.

Thank you, Paula, I'll follow the instructions and do this. I just wonder why there isn't a mechanism to add a different format of a book instead of using the alternate cover method. Seems odd. Thanks!

Because GR's database cannot have multiple editions with the same ISBN listed.

I understand that clearly, Rivka. What I was wondering is why there isn't a mechanism available through which we could add an edition that had the same ISBN numbers in a way other than having to use the Add Alternate Cover method. Anyway, I added it that way and we're all good now. Thanks!

You mean some sort of automated way of doing so?

Not exactly automated, Rivka, no, but rather an interface similar to the Add Alternate Cover method. You know, it would be called "Add Book with Same ISBN But Different Format". Does that sound like something I might propose to the Goodreads Feedback people? Thank you!

Ah! I see. I don't think it comes up much, though. Publishers reissuing books with the same ISBN and a new cover is (surprisingly) common. Using the same ISBN for multiple formats is pretty uncommon, I think.

Nenangs | 464 comments it's getting more common now?

Perhaps. Although we have far, far more instances of the other.

I agree with Rivka that reused ISBNS with new covers is much more common. I'd only have a handful of books with the multi format ISBNS.

Oh, OK, Rivka. I had the impression from our earlier correspondence that this happened fairly frequently. If it happens much less frequently then there's no need to create a special method of adding these books. Thanks so much!
