Does Reading A Lot Make You A Nerd?
no i dont thinks so. all my freinds were surprised when they found out i read alot because im am/was a really bad kid at school like i wagged and smoked i dont do it anymore but i still the same and im not a nerd or dork
I'm a nerd, but I'm ALWAYS reading/writing/on GR. I don't think being a nerd is necessarily a bad thing.
Haha you're hilarious Amber xD.Colby: You are correct - I agree with you. Being a nerd means being smarter than everyone else :)
My friend and I had a conversation about the difference between nerds and geeks yesterday. Geeks are obsessed with one thing, while nerds are obsessed with all the nerdy things. :P So I would say reading a lot doesn't really make you a nerd... not that being a nerd is a bad thing at all! I'm definitely a nerd, and so are all my friends and almost everyone at my nerdy school (so I'm lucky for never being teased about wanting to talk about the latest episode of Doctor Who rather than Justin Bieber's new single). We rule the world yo!
I think that it can be a correlation, as most of the people I know who read a lot consider themselves geeks or nerds. However, I don't think that reading and geekdom/nerdiness are synonymous. I have nerd friends who don't really like to read, and friends who love to read who don't really consider themselves dorks.
I'm a nerd and a geek. Like, I'm a hardcore nerd. I love nerds and geeks! They are my favorite people! But, I agree with Anna in saying that reading and nerdiness aren't synonymous. But, if you want to be a nerd, be a proud and lovable one!
Swifty- *high five* DOCTOR WHO FTW!Anyways....while I'm not afraid to say that I'm a nerd (cause i most definitely am), reading doesn't necessarily make you a geek/nerd. It can depend on the area you're in, but while many nerds/geeks like to read, reading isn't synonymous with either of the two.

So true! Does it matter if you're a nerd? Is there even such thing as a nerd? Why does it matter if you are one? And even if you are, be a proud nerd!
I am such a proud nerd! I think that, at least for me, being a nerd (and a nerdfighter...are others here?) is amazing! It means that you can be excited about your passions and love to learn! Also it means that you can end four consecutive sentences with exclamation points!
Anna- *raises hand* Nerdfighter, right here! Really nerd are the best people in the world! No offense to those who aren't, of course. :) But really, nerds are my best friends- and I have a lot more in common with 'nerds' than with some other 'normal' people. For spirit week (this week), Monday was nerd Day. While at my house we call it "Come As You Are Day" (my dad and I were joking about it), I decided that I should probably dress it up a bit since I go to a private school with uniforms.
Swiftfire wrote: "I'm a Nerdfighter too, of course! Which leads nicely into this quote."That was exactly what I was thinking of!
There are some popular people of people that know ALOT of people who love to read at my school . i LOVE to read and dont get called a nerd or anything for it , im caring a book all day to each class .
I don't consider myself a nerd. But most of you probably would if you met me. I clearly qualify, but it's not a classification I really think about, if you know what I mean. It's just that in my school, we don't really think of it that way.
No way. Until you start saying super-long words that nobody knows, you're good. Besides, being a nerd is the cool nowadays, isn't it? Also! If soembody says that to you, you should say, "Um, since when is reading a bad thing? I'm kinda proud of it, thanks."
Swiftfire wrote: "I'm a Nerdfighter too, of course! Which leads nicely into this quote."That is an amazing quote. I just posted it on my FB quotes. :D
I don't think that reading necessarily makes you a nerd, although I think that nerds do read a lot. It is seen as an intellectual pastime, after all. However, if you read Twilight and the like, you're really not a nerd. Nerds read a variety of things, and they don't stick with bestsellers.I am a nerd, although I do prefer to think of myself as a geek. (I do think there is a slight difference, but I have not the time to give denotations and compare them with connotations.) However, I consider myself a nerd more because I'm a math and philosophy major and have an interest in theoretical physics and so on than due to reading. Of course I don't fulfill all the nerd stereotypes (what person could?), but I recognize that I have tendencies to react to things as a nerd does. Nerdy things make me happy, even if I'm a nerd of a different sort, if that makes sense.
btw, John Green's my favourite writer. I need another copy of Looking for Alaska so I can have a copy to write notes in and underline passages. (Is that a nerdy thing to do? Probably; I don't think normal people analyze everything.)
I think reading a lot makes you awesome...well in my personal experience it does

And John Green isn't my favorite writer, but I really enjoy his books. Oh, and I found a Nerdfighter at my school today! :)
I asked one of my friends this and she said,"Why would reading make you a nerd? You're just enjoying a second reality, your own world. It's like a home where anything according to your wishes, why is that bad? I feel like readers are NEVER alone when they read."

So true, so true!
I love not being the only nerdfighter at my school, while she's a senior (I'm only a sophomore) we have a class together and are both on the quiz team so we can have amazingly 'nerdy' conversations together!
Im a huge fan on forcing friends to read...and because I read most genres its easier to pick who will like what...lol my friend actually blames me for her money woes, we were friends in primary but hadnt spoken in ages (even tho she lives in my street) any way meet again at a party now we chill all the time...I my have started up her reading addiction again (her boyfriend and parents not happy haha )
I also send book out my bestie who at the moment lives on the other side of the state(in queensland thats very very far away)
im all for dragging people kicking and screaming into the nerd world

I love reading and everything that comes with it, it's amazing sometimes how much people don't want to be seen as nerds, like the other day I was in the library and my friend was all like, why are you reading??BECAUSE IT'S A LIBRARY!!!!
I have another one that always calls me a nerd but I know she wouldn't prefer it any other way

Out of curiosity what are you considering nerdy, dorky, ect? Most of the time theses are stero typical terms applied to people who are insecure, afraid to talk to the opposite sex, not social, always has their nose stuck in a book, straight A's, and people who don't have alot of friends or are not 'popular'.
I personally don't think that reading makes you nerdy, but if you think you are...woohoo for you. I think people should embrace their nerdiness.Encourage others to become nerds to because, you know, we have pi. LOLOLOLOL
I think it does make you a nerd. I read alot and that is considered "nerdy". There's nothing wrong with being a nerd. Embrace your inner nerd! :D
...no offense ppl...but i kinda DO think that reading alot DOES MAKE YOU A NERD...not to offend anyone but hello people! this is the 21st century! Rite now, ppl text, not email, ppl talk, ppl party. Duh! No one stays at home and reads....sryy to offend those who disagree with meelove,

Who says you can't like to party and like to read? And people have always talked, so what does that have to do with it being the 21st century? And why the hell would you join a book site just to call everyone on it a nerd? And please, would it be too hard for you to at least spell words correctly? And lastly in reference to the comment no-one stays at home and reads, I would think that almost everyone on this site would disagree with you about that, because it is a completely stupid and amazingly incorrect statement. Grow a Brain please, help humanity out....

Being a person who love to read is awesome. Everyone who enjoys reading for fun or for education is not a nerd.
Rachael wrote: "being a bookworm is fun.to me reading is just blocking out the world and going to a different place in my mind.so im proud to be a bookworm :)"Agreed. Being a bookworm or a geek is something to be proud of. It shows that an individual is passionate about something. If someone calls me a bookworm or a nerd, at least I know that means that I read a lot, and reading a lot is an awesome thing.
Honestly, I take the fact that people call me a nerd as a compliment. The word "nerd", based on their definition, generally implies someone smart. Frankly, I like being smart. I like being called smart. What's wrong with that? Besides, at the end of the day, it isn't always the "high class crowd" that becomes famous. It's normally the geeks and nerds. Sorry, Galinda, but in this case, you were wrong.Of course, it's really you who gets the last laugh when you're called a nerd. No matter how much they stereotype you as a nerd, you are truly your own person. You don't have to be smart, or wear glasses. Just because you enjoy reading books, doesn't mean you are anti-social. In my case, I prefer books to people (at times) because books are uncomplicated. No matter how many times you read the book, it won't react to you differently, or insult you out of the blue. Books are consistent friends.
Back to the point. In the end, you are who ever you think you are. They may call you "nerd" or "geek" all they want, but in the end it's up to you to decide whether you are a nerd.
BTW, I can gurantee that the people that are "social butterflies" probably enjoy reading just as much as you do. They are just too scared of being called a nerd. So essentially, you are a stronger person than they are.

"Dude, you read so much. Is that why your such a geek?"
Ouch. But is that true? Are we all dorks because we read too much?
