♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments Re-read Fair Game (Alpha & Omega, #3) by Patricia Briggs and it was AWESOME. I did have a review, but it seems GRs deleted it when I made the book 'currently reading' which is annoying as i don't have a backup. But I believe i rated it around 4 stars, which i'll be going again. Thinking 4.5
Also re-read Frost Burned (Mercy Thompson, #7) by Patricia Briggs though i remembered almost nothing from either book, so it was really good to catch up on everything.

Read Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4) by Patricia Briggs which i really enjoyed. And i would love to get a start on Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs but it will unfortunately have to wait till i get home from my mum's. So instead I'll start The Golden Princess (Emberverse, #11) by S.M. Stirling or The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay

I'm still working on Dead Heat (Alpha & Omega #4) by Patricia Briggs . It started off kinda slow for me and I keep putting it down. I plan to finish today or tomorrow

Yea a few people seem to have more difficultly with this book compare to the others in the series, I personally rather enjoyed it, but then I grew up with horses and rode for years - though I also have difficultly separating it from the others, they started merging.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments Re-reading The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay I can see a lot of issues with this first book, that I think I might have missed the first time around, probably due to the fact I was a lot younger. The worlds and species are still fascinating and I'll definitely continue, I just hope Charlie stops being a whiny self-centered pain in my ass between now and the next book. Girl has some series Me problems.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 31 comments I've just started reading Dick Francis's Gamble by Felix Francis. The protagonist's American friend is shot dead at a racetrack and he has no clue who shot him or why he was shot. So far I've been enjoying it.

She's great isnt she!! Have you read her older books? I've only read her Sianim/Aralorn series but I thought it was really good!! You can see her characterization skill even back then.
(Masques & Wolfsbane - I can't recall the names of the others off the top off my head)

message 7313: by Taylor (new)

Taylor The Blade Itself (The First Law, #1) by Joe Abercrombie is my most addictive current read. I've been trying my hardest to pace myself, but it's hard not to just devour the whole thing without taking time to savor it! The characters are distinct, their voices are loud, demanding, and sometimes terrible, but always funny or enlightening in some way.

It's an unusual style of writing, to say the least. Equal parts vivid description and internal voice, mixed with sharp wit, dry sarcasm, and sometimes startling turns of events, it's much more entertaining than I was originally led to believe. Sometimes the prose is crass, sometimes incredibly sophisticated, but never once have I been forced to seek out a dictionary in frustration, and so I count my blessings. To quote: "You have to love the small things things". It's one of those styles of writing that makes you feel accomplished for having read all 530 pages, and even gives you a good laugh for your trouble. It's gritty, graphic, and violent, but also intelligent, snarky, and fascinating.

As far as Fantasy authors go, I think I'm in love.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments finished The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay dropping a star, now rating 3.

Next will be either Touch by Mark Sennen In the Skin of a Monster by Kathryn Barker or if those two displease me then I'll rage quit and read Night Broken (Mercy Thompson, #8) by Patricia Briggs because Briggs is amazing and a guaranteed good read.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments DNF The Golden Princess (Emberverse, #11) by S.M. Stirling at 9 pages!
Re-read The Better Part of Darkness (Charlie Madigan, #1) by Kelly Gay and decided to drop a star from my original rating (which was 4) cause I found Charlie irritating. finished listening to Ender's Game (The Ender Quintet, #1) by Orson Scott Card it was weird but enjoyable - 3 stars.

Started Touch by Mark Sennen and really enjoying it, its super creepy and gross. Which is why I've only been read a chapter here and there, and also started listening to Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green which I've really been enjoying - though I imagine based on the wording, if I had read this instead of listening I would have pictured the main character completely different.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments So I ended up DNFing Touch by Mark Sennen about midway through, it was making me feel queasy and I kept avoiding it, I was super keen to see the bad guys get caught, but not enough to read the rest. Plus I have a giant pile of books from the library I need to get through anyways.

Still listening to Something from the Nightside (Nightside, #1) by Simon R. Green and really enjoying it. I believe I'm about midway through atm (they're at a 60's ghost cafe).

And I smashed through just over half of In the Skin of a Monster by Kathryn Barker last night. I ended up putting the book down because it was 3am and my eyes felt gritty. Seriously this book was much better than I expected, I was a bit dubious about the paranormal element to begin with, and really confused in the second chapter, but now I love it. My only issue is because I'm so keen to read the next chapter I keep forgetting to see who's POV it is from - which is nicely labeled at the beginning of each new chapter - so I get somewhat confused and have to double check. lol.

also reading The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1) by Chloe Neill , only a few pages in so far so can't say much.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 31 comments Right now I'm reading Desperate by Daniel Palmer. It's about a couple who want to adopt a baby so they allow a pregnant young woman to live in the other half of their duplex for free. Strange things start happening. So far I've been enjoying it.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments Finished The Veil (Devil's Isle, #1) by Chloe Neill Rot & Ruin (Rot & Ruin, #1) by Jonathan Maberry .

I ended up rating both 3 stars for different reasons. Rot and Ruin was good, well written, i like the story, and for the most part the characters (though I took a while to warm up to Benny) I liked that even though Benny was the MC he was by far the most badass or interesting. It's nice to see all the action from an out side point of view. So why only 3 stars? simple, the narrator could have done a better job. I found his emphasis on the characters emotions and actions to be bland and boring. Otherwise it was enjoyable to listen to - but I will be reading the next book instead.

The Veil had all the potential. Great set up, wonderful location, fascinating premise, but the characters to me were very.....been there, done that. I should have loved them, but they felt like the same cut out copies of a billion other characters. It was close, like i said i should have like them, but there was just something missing that held them back from being excellent characters that i could love. which is unfortunate. Also there was all this crazy going on at the end, then they drop this personal bomb on our heads which i thought was ridiculous, maybe should have waited for the next book? or done it earlier? either way it completely pulled me out of the story, a very wtf moment. still an enjoyable enough read, don't think I'll be reading The Sight though.

♥ Ashleigh ♥ Contrary to popular belief I'm not actually mad! (cheshire_red) | 86 comments finished Six of Crows (Six of Crows, #1) by Leigh Bardugo , was amazing! I was a little apprehensive because I'm not the biggest fan of Leigh's other series, The Grisha. But I absolutely love how she wrote this one, the characters were brilliant, the politics corrupt and evil, just the way I like them and the world filled with all kinds of beliefs, cultures and other interesting tidbits. Really a fantastic start to a new series, can't wait to get my mitts on book 2!!

Starting The Iron Duke (Iron Seas, #1) by Meljean Brook , I didn't re-read the blurb before I dumped myself into this world and found myself utterly confused. But about 15 pages in and I think I'm starting to get it......

I'm sure you will love it. To me, this is steampunk at its very best. A lovely romance as well.
The great thing is that there are more books in this series. Most of them are wonderful as well.

I also recommend The Clockwork Dagger (Clockwork Dagger, #1) by Beth Cato . I really enjoyed this different slant to steampunk.

The Way Back Home by Freya North ] took much longer to get into, but as always, ends up a story I'll remember.
