I honestly had heard of the series but had simply not really been reading anything that I considered fantasy especially in a series. Then I heard about the HBO series and got more curious. I don't normally have TV be the guide for my reading but the series got me interested. I am gladder for it now and have finished the first book with great anticipation for the rest. I have no plans to watch the series at this point as its usually disappointing, and I don't have HBO.... great book though.

Haven't seen the series, just some stills and trailers on web sites. Have read all 5 books though and will probably never watch the series. It could never live up to the film in my head.
Then don't compare them. Watch the show on its own merits, just with the advantage of knowing more about the characters. It's easily one of the best TV shows to be produced in a long time (probably since The Wire), so you're really missing out on great TV if you don't watch the show.

I just hope the 2nd season will be up to the standards of the first.
