Anyone else suffering from series overload?

You're not the only one, Mary!Lately I've been using FictFact to organize the series I want to read. I use the 'Next Books' to put the 10 series I'm planning to read next. I have two sticky series (Harry Potter and BDB) that I'm working on, but the rest I just rotate...once I read a book from that series I move the next one down so it doesn't show up in the top 10 and then I move up a different series.
I'm also giving priorities to series I know I want to read. Anything I'm on the fence I move down and give less priority. If I didn't like the first book in a series, I'm just not continuing reading.
Of course, this doesn't mean that I'm not starting new series or that I'm not flexible...if I feel like reading a different series or mix in a standalone here and there, I do so but at least I'm just not starting new series and I'm making progress on the series I already started.
LOL, I'll definitely host one...but I'm traveling to the DR for Thanksgiving so it will have to be after that.
One of the reasons I was so slow on getting on the pnr/uf bandwagon is because of the sheer number of series! Not just that, but some of the "best" ones are so loooong, they are quite intimidating. Now I have started but am so behind some series I almost want to give them up, but they are TOO GOOD>
What I really need to do is stay off Goodreads and Paperbackswap for awhile. Less exposure to new series.

What is FictFact?
Lacy, FictFact is a free website that lists books by series so you never have to guess which book you're up to. Lots of features etc etc.www.fictfact.com
Sandra, Just got on FictFact and love it!!! Holy cow what a TBR mountain I created. However, I love the organization now. Tons easier when going to my bookshelf, Kindle, or library.
Mary wrote: "What I really need to do is stay off Goodreads and Paperbackswap for awhile. Less exposure to new series."That's a good strategy, Mary.

I have big time series overload. I'm not one for reading straight through a series, so it takes me years to make it through a series. I'm all the point now when I wish there were a lot more standalone books.

I've made a resolution not to start anymore series until I finish at least two that I have on the go right now. Not sure if I'll be able to keep to it though.
Lauren, I'm rooting for you. I can't do it. I just hate the idea that I'll run out of books in a series and that I'll get burned out if I overdo a series.
Lady Danielle exactly! Sometimes I miss the days before I found paperbackswap and goodreads and learned about series and reading books in order. I just picked up a book that looked good and read it.Lauren I have vowed to do something similar for 2012. But I have decided not to pick up a series until I have finished or caught up with another one that's similar. Not more vampires until I catch up with the Black Dagger Brotherhood books. No more magic/wizards/fae until I catch up with Harry Dresden by Jim Butcher and finish the Fever book by KMM. No new dragon books until I catch up with the Dragonfire books by Deborah Cooke.
Hopefully I can stick with that. I'm starting to get all my series confused. I have a bunch where I read the first book so long ago that I can no longer remember the series set up. So I've been looking for some on audio (cheap or free) to reread them.
Mary wrote: "Not more vampires until I catch up with the Black Dagger Brotherhood books"Exactly! For me it is no BDB until I finish Midnight Breed. I can only have one group of vampire warriors going on at one time.
Lauren and Mary, that makes sense. Not that I do it, but it helps to avoid comparing the different books (which really isn't fair to the books or the authors).
I'm caught up on the Breeds except for the very last one. I'm caught up on my Carpathians. I'm up to book 5 on the BDB. I think I have too many mercenary/cop/military unit/security team type series going as well.
For me it is shapeshifters. I'm reading the Westfield Wolves (historical) and the Feral Warriors and the Dark Hunters/ Were Hunters. I've also started Primal Instinct and Elder Races.Completely overloaded, lol!
To me, series are good for the first three books and after that the characters seem to become caricatures of themselves and the plots repeat or become so outlandish in the author's attempts to keep it fresh as to be totally obnoxious. So, except for a very few series, I stop with the first book that strikes me that way. I may pick up another book in the series if it gets a lot of mention but will not read the books in between.
I have so many series going on it's hard for me to keep track of them. I'll put in my calendar at work when the next one is coming out so I'm ready to go buy it. I know I've too many series going on, but I just can't stop reading them or wanting to read them. I do agree with you Aryn about some of the series that I loved in the beginning that start repeating themselves and I slowly lose interest, to the point where I don't buy the next books anymore. I know about 99% won't agree with me, but JR Ward's brotherhood books and the Feehan's Carpathian books are the ones I'm not keeping up with anymore. I loved both of them so much when I started them, it's kind of sad that they don't hold my interest anymore.
I absolutely love reading series, but find myself in the same position as others. I have started sooooo many and need to finish a few before I start others.I will say that FictFact has helped alot in prioritizing what I will read next, as well as help me rotate series books. I'm not one that can read a series straight through. I have to mix it up a bit. FictFact is great for that.
Still...I find myself constantly starting a new series. In fact I started a new one just today. Shame on me.
I have plenty of series that I haven't started yet. I want to finish "Pretty Little Liars" series, but there are so many other books I want to read. It's a bit overwhelming. Those series just keep getting bigger and bigger. Personally, I think 3 or 4 should be enough. When it reaches like 10, I just lost interest. Maybe I am not very determine
I try to stay away from seies these days, i am more into individual books, giving myself to read as many as I can get my hands on :)
I think that a trilogy is probably the ideal length for a series-at least it is for me. I tend to burn out on a series around book 5. I'm fine with an author writing multiple books using the same world, but I get cranky with following book after book after book with the same characters and (pretty much) the same issues. I'd love to find more stand alones.
That's one of the good things in HR. Most series stop at a trilogy or a quartet.I agree about the standalones, Sandra. That's one of the reasons I like to read books by Sandra Brown.
Most HR series don't even need to be read in order-another plus. I've been pretty good about not starting any new series that I know I'll have to read close together to keep track.
I reread 3 books from 2 different series that I had kind of forgotten the set up and new I needed a reminder. For one of those: I am donating all my print copies and checking the audio versions out from the library.
I'm still thinking about boxing up all my books and just keeping the stand alones and 1 or 2 each of different types of series out. And not getting any others out until I finish some series.
I have shiny object syndrom when it comes to new series.
Hey Ladies,I hope everyones Holidays were nice. Thanks for the FictFact Tip I am now getting organized for 2012. I swear I am making it this year on all my challenges. This is my 3rd year trying and life keeps getting in my way. I am also a series Addict. My Faves are Woods , Patterson , Evanovich. I have about 5 others that I have purchased and are piling up in basement. You have a given me a resolution for the year i am going to catch up on all my series and dive into the ones in my basement to see if i even like them. I will certainly make it this year. I miss reading so much i am going to make the time for this year. Good Luck to all and Happy New Year!!!

I'm really thinking about boxing up a bunch of my books and leaving out just a few seires at a time. Maybe 1 from each genre. I can leave out my stand alones. Maybe that will force me to finish some up. I have a bunch of plastic bins filled with my daughters out grown clothes. I've been meaning to haul them to the thrift store. (the clothes not the bins). I have plenty of room in my basement for them. If I do that should I put anything in the bins for preservation? It's actually a pretty dry basement. I don't need to run a dehumidifier or anything. My clothes never smell musty when I rotate seasons.
Or does that sound like a completely dumb idea? I kind of feel like I have too many choices and maybe limiting what's out and easy to get to will help.
