Megan Maloney I really don't blame Frypan for nicknaming himself.

message 55: by Anastasia (new)

Anastasia Keelor Tesla most likely refers to Nick who was the one who was sent down into the shaft after the room that brings the boys in had left. He was cut in half.

Awesome! Great guess! I´m officially staying with these.

message 57: by Anika (new)

Anika I honestly was always under the impression that James Dashner just had a daughter or a neice or something who had a crush on the Korean pop-star Choi Minho. I'm sure if it were the case, she would be absolutely thrilled to have one of his characters named after her crush. It would make sense too, since Choi Minho happens to have a rather similar character. That's just my opinion though.

Yeonsoo I thought Minho was named after a Korean actor Lee Minho...

Ghadeer That's actually very interesting.. I liked the idea of assigning them scientists names. Which I guess it's done based on their way of thinking or type of personality.

He's not Chinese... He's Korean.

yeah. I was gonna point that out too. In fact when I was reading the book and Minho's character came up and he being asian and all, I immediately pictured him as Choi Minho. And now, whenever I read the book, I always picture him as Choi Minho. O_o Well, he's a handsome lad.

message 62: by M (new)

M Thekellys: Ah, yes. Who is Minho named after? I get this question often. And the answer is very simple. The events of THE MAZE RUNNER take place well in the future, so I purposefully wanted a main character who is named after someone who doesn’t exist yet in our day. So keep an eye out for the great man who will rise up in our society called Minho. (Could it be my niece’s husband? Maybe!)

This was copied and pasted of of James Dashners website...so to this question there is no answer

유안 박 Minho is one of the most common names in Korea. I think James Dashner just needed an Asian name that can be pronounced easily.

I don't think so. I researched Korean scientists and all that and there is a known Korean mathematician named Minhyong Kim. He could easily be named after him. The names are very similar.

Lauren deleted user wrote: "I googled 'Minho' and the only thing that came up was a Chinese rapper. haha and his name was Choi Minho."

I hate to burst your bubble, but Choi Minho isn't Chinese. He's from South Korea and is a member of a kpop group called SHINee. He is the lead rapper, but also a talented vocalist, dancer and actor.

Why must people assume that every asian person they see is Chinese?

well to be honest, Thomas (Newt) is British so he'll pronounce it the way a British man would pronounce it

Zart makes sense...but who is Zart again?

message 82: by Brigid (new)

Brigid Ferris I'm starting to think that the girls were either named after Religious woman or Queens. (I haven't heard of Dashner saying a theme on which the girls were named after.)

Religious figures make some sense Teresa is named after Mother Teresa. Rachael is also biblical (Genesis). And several saint Elizabeths. Though I can't think of anything for Harriet or Sonya.

Then maybe if you take Teresa out of the question there's Queen Sonya of Norway, Queen Elizabeth (Beth), There was a British Princess named Harriet who was key to bring about the treaty of Dover which is admittedly stretching it a bit far. Then if Teresa wasn't confirmed for Mother Teresa I would have said Theresa Maria the Queen of Holy Roman empire.

Thoughts?

Jas i know you're a deleted user and this has nothing to do with the question, but i just want set one thing straight: "I googled 'Minho' and the only thing that came up was a Chinese rapper. haha and his name was Choi Minho." Choi Minho is fucking SOUTH KOREAN, did you not read the fucking explanation they gave?

message 84: by Kameep (last edited Oct 26, 2014 07:55PM) (new)

Kameep To be honest, I'm surprised someone hasn't explained this all in the first place after a year.
First of all, book is called the MAZE RUNNER, which is an illusion for the Christian Biblical book of JOSHUA. The next book is The Scorch Trials (I can take a pretty good guess that it means Judges). So as you may have guessed, Thomas represented Joshua, and Moses (Minho) is a leader that trained Joshua (Thomas). If you aren't familiar with the Bible, you might not know this, but MOSES trained Joshua and allowed him to get into Jericho (i.e. dystopian earth). The Egyptian princess actually named Moses in her native language when she "drew him out of the water". Since MOSES was named by an Egyptian Princess, why would he have the same type of name as the Hebrew tribe leaders (keepers)?? I guess the author wanted to keep the "M" the same and change it around a bit because that's what the Hebrews did when they couldn't interpret Moses' Egyptian name. And you were thinking of a Korean superstar? You guys were looking in the wrong place the whole time.
Like the Maze Runner? (too soon?)

Just trying to keep you guys on track.

*Moses is Hebrew, but we didn't even know what the Princess named him in Egyptian. The Bible was written by Moses, and he wrote in in Hebrew, so it's only logical that his name would remain analogous.
**just finished MR (and had previous knowledge of the Bible)

Anne Ansible Minho is not named for anyone we know. He is named for a genius from the future.

To be honest, I disagree completely. Number one, I really liked the way maze runner was written. The writing style seemed "sophisticated" to me, which suited the book, because the characters are really smart. Number two, THG and MR can't be compared. They're so different from each other - THG is a fight to the death, MR is a book about kids in a controlled world/the world about to end. Completely different. Like when people try and compare THG and Divergent - completely different. Sorry.
