Yeah, you can write it :) Actually, it sounds like you got Jo going - I think it's a great idea, just not sure I can write that level myself. (I did for my kids, but I knew my kids interests.)

That's great Alex! There's a real need for good stuff with different heroes in interesting stories.

OOPS-Senior moment sweet boy!! Your story sound very interesting--you know you can post your writing on line here--with your profile, don't you??

Sammy sprints off to read!

Just let us know where it is and we'll read it - I like not knowing where a story's going, unless you want help with the plot.

As soon as I get a minute - have to take the kid out to skating soon and my concentration is crappy right now. Just finished the radio show and now I'm nervous.

Seriously? It could give you a reason to hang onto someone :) (Quite innocently of course.)

Featherweight has one cross-dressing and one trans book right now. Wink wink.

Go Ralph! It is great actually, the variety of stories you have accepted and are bringing to life.

Don't be nervous--really you did well--I would tell you if you hadn't--honest!

My daughters and I watched a documentary about a 10-year-old girl who was born a boy; she's still physically a boy, because she's too young for surgery, and in the documentary the parents and doctor were discussing hormone therapy to suppress the male puberty the girl will otherwise go through. According to the parents, the girl started asking when she was about two why she didn't look like a girl "down there".
I used to have a friend who identified as bisexual, who said he knew when he was five or six that he liked both boys and girls "that way."
People tend to think that young kids don't have any idea about sexuality or gender, but those people are wrong, and I think there is a need for books that address the 5-year-old who wants to know why "she" has a penis or the 7-year-old who wants to kiss his best (boy) friend. The problem is I think a lot of teachers, librarians, and especially parents would strenuously object to those books, and that's very unfortunate.

I agree--transgender--is very very taboo in so many places--so very unfortunate!

Maybe very smart and mature as well--you should have issues about where you are comfortable being touched sweet boy--wise beyond your years!

The hormone suppression therapy is a cool idea, because it is potentially reversible. There are apparently some kids who change their self-perception later, although one has to wonder about the pressures and drives behind that. Did you read about the twins where the one boy was MTF and doing that? It's posted here http://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/7...

Many of us do at your age, I think. Except for some who are starved for any kind of touch. Slow trust is a good thing.

Ah dear--so sorry that happened to you!

I had read about the twins where one is M->F, and I thought it was cool that they live in Maine, the state I'm originally from.

I think you have to write that one Alex - it has your name all over it. Would it be uncomfortable to be adopted by the guy he fancies?

Ah, so the new boyfriend she marries is a new, new boyfriend, not the friend who fancies the teacher - I guess I got a little lost.

The guy has a bunch of stuff going. I think his plot bunnies breed even faster than mine (and more dramatically.) Have you looked at his home page writing? Cool stuff.

A lot of raw talent, sweetie, and some amazing imagination. You need just a little time to figure out how to mesh your style with a little more clarity and readability and you're gonna be awesome. So yeah, you're good now and getting better.

This one could definitely work as an appealing, fairly straightforward m/m romance - the most interesting part might be in figuring out why James is in Matthew's care (presumably unrelated or very distantly) as the story opens. You could get some nice yearning in there early on, and conflict/guilt for Matthew for both his desires and the writing. And maybe some angst as to why James is not living at home. And a little betrayal scene somewhere as James stumbles on a WIP on the computer and recognizes himself in the description of the scene. Go for it!

(On the other hand, you have a really good plot for a brocest story)

I like your idea, Alex; I think I would just be more comfortable with it if the boy was 18. (Keep in mind also the difference in ages of consent; I think where you are, Alex, it's 16; but in many states in the US, and for the purposes of publishing, it's usually 18. Many adult romance publishers won't consider anything with under 18 characters, though Dreamspinner seems to be an exception given some of their stuff that I've read.)
On the other hand, if you wanted to keep the boy at 17, you could always take out any explicit sexual content (i.e. written with the intent to arouse the reader) and push it as a young adult story; there are YA stories in which students have affairs with teachers; I read one as a teen that was written in the 1950s in which a late-teenage girl and her guardian fell in love with each other. Strange as it seems, as long as there isn't gratuitous sex in the story, you can get away with a lot more in YA than you can in adult romance.

It also depends on how you present his use of the boy in his work. Sometimes the transfer of real world to your fiction is unconscious. So you could have Matthew suddenly inspired to write a story about older guy/younger guy who is 18. And it flows easily and he thinks his character of the young guy is inspired and only after he submits it he rereads and realizes that he's written James. And he could be torn between feeling guilty and thinking its his best work and he doesn't want to withdraw or mutilate it with changes...
Keeping James as 17 could add a layer, where Matthew is determined not to think about him in a sexual way because of his age, and it gets sublimated in his writing. And James may think he's old enough and Matthew is being ridiculous, while Matthew is determined not to betray the mother's trust.

Part of that is you looking at 17 from your side and it feels pretty adult to you, where us looking from the adult side are more aware of the issues of under-18 and sex content. But controversial can be good in a story, just be aware of the boundaries and only cross them knowingly. There are stories out there with older guy/younger guy under 18, but the way you write it determines whether a publisher would touch it and whether readers will be fascinated or a little squicked out, and whether they see Matthew as a good man tying to do the right thing as he unconsciously falls in love, or as a sleazy guy.
I actually have an unpublished novel where the MC's are 17 and mid-20's at the start of the novel, but I kept the sex from happening until the younger guy is 18 for many of those reasons. (Also the older guy is a cop and there are position-of-authority issues here where the age 16 for consent becomes age 18 if the older is in that position- wouldn't want the guy to have to arrest himself.)
