Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments There is an area nearby that used to be called Hell's Gate. It's where two rivers converge and the waters are quick wild. Obviously people disliked the name enough to get it changed to Sulpher Gate.

I live on Highway 666.

Chrissie There is a place in Northern Dalarna, a region of Sweden, where the landscape is all a bit tilted. This means that if you let your car free-roll, you will roll UP hill. It looks that way, but of course you are rolling downhill. It is way out in the middle of nowhere. A very weird place to visit, but lots of fun.

OMG! That's interesting that your Province uses that number, for some reason I thought most places skipped it because of the connotation."

There was talk a few years ago about changing the name but common sense prevailed. Yes, there are a lot of accidents on the road, but I would think that would have less to do with the 666 designation and more to do with the condition of the road, the heavy oil field traffic on it, as well as the number of people drinking and driving. Most of those accidents have involved alcohol.

There's a place in Scotland like that too. They call it the Electric Brae. I drove over it when I was in Scotland and it was a very strange feeling. You think you're going up, but you're going down. :)

Chrissie Janice, so you know how peculiar this feels! There must be other such places too.

I admit, I have no idea what 666 means! Could it be the Canadian emergency telephone number?

No, according to Revelations in the Bible, 666 is the mark of the devil. There is a lot of superstitious nonsense around it. There is (was) a highway 666 in Nevada and I remember watching a tv program about it, suggesting that the strange things that happened on that highway could be attributed to the number.

Chrissie Hmmm, you learn more every day!

Cheryl (cherylllr) New Mexico, not Nevada. :)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Oops, sorry. It was a long time ago that I saw that documentary.

Cheryl (cherylllr) pfft
Alphabetically close, I concede. Try driving across them, though, and then see how close they are!
