D Edmiston The book was good, but was dark & depressing. And hmm.. if everyone died, how was there anyone left to read the journal about it?

Ggb67 Umm. Because not everyone died, obviously. Not everyone died in the first book, and we don't know whatever survivors are still out there. And there are two more books to come to answer a lot of those questions.

More importantly, re-read the line of the book. Amy became known for living a thousand years. That should tip you off right there.

Richard seems like the mooted movie version has come to nothing and there's been not a peep on the sequels - seems like this book was a storm in a pretty average tea cup

Joanna Actually there is a chapter excerpt of the sequel in new editions of the passage, it's still due out 2012 as it always has been.

You can read the chapter on amazon, that's where I read it.

Ggb67 And just remember, just because Sara's journal has been lost, it doesn't necessarily mean that Sara is dead. Just that her journal is lost. In the first book, we see a number of characters - Theo, Lacey, Grey, Sara (again), and Wolgast -- that seem dead but aren't. We don't know if the Colony is dead (there is no blood found). So a lot remains to be revealed. Who survived the Roswell Massacre, where is the Colony, and is Demo still alive?

BillyPilgrim Was anyone else bothered by the fact that, when Theo, Peter, Alicia, and Caleb were being chased by the virals, they went INSIDE the mall (during the day) to try and escape? It seemed completely inconsistent with the premise that the virals could not function in the daylight.

I have not been able to get over this apparently glaring plot inconsistency--especially when the scene plays such a major part in the story. Cronin could have used a hundred other reasons for the group to enter the mall that would have been much more plausible.

Esther BillyPilgrim wrote: "Was anyone else bothered by the fact that, when Theo, Peter, Alicia, and Caleb were being chased by the virals, they went INSIDE the mall (during the day) to try and escape? It seemed completely in..."
I think they hoped to create bottleneck in the narrow mall so that the virals would be attacking from a single direction, becoming a concentrated target for them to shoot at, hopefully reducing the number of virals or causing them to retreat before making a quick get away.
More than anything I think they at least wanted to make a 'last stand' rather than be attacked as they tried to run across open land.

Tony Whitford I for one can't wait for the sequel. I thought this book was really well written, full of emotion and excellent characters. I really enjoyed it. Action, Adventure,Virals, what more could you ask for.

Henrik Rostoft This is one of my few 5 star books. And I am also waiting for the sequel.

Tracy Took me a while to get into the book but liked it once I did. There were some parts that seemed a little too stretched out and some that I couldn't figure out why they were even in the book. Despite those few things I did really like the book and will read the sequel once it comes out. Unfortunately it has been so long since I read it I will probably have to go back and either re-read the book or do a quick review to refresh memory before the sequel.

Jeni I was really disappointed by this book for so many reasons. Not least because it was an amalgamation of everything that's come before - I am Legend, 28 Days Later, Resident Evil...

It was very much written to be made into a film, rather than to be a good novel. The train scene, for example. If that wasn't a blatant 'MAKE THIS NOVEL INTO A FILM' scene I don't know what is. It was kind of silly how they all managed to fix the train and drive off in it, especially as they were being chased and then just suddenly... weren't.

♥Scout Paige♥ I think too much happens in the book for it to of been written to be made into a film... In my opinion it seems pretty blatant that its better as a novel to much will have to be chopped to make it the length of the average film meaning it will probably lose some important parts out..... A film definitely wouldn't be as good as the book they have to change to much.

Sarah Yes, there are inconstancies that drive me batty occasionally. Overall I loved it, but wished the plot was tighter. One question bothering me at the moment is who is Fanning? At the beginning Fanning is talking to the sweep Grey, saying he wants to go home, and shows him presumably images of sexual assault from his past. He says over and over "I am Fanning". Who was that?! At the end of the book when Peter reads the 12's files there is no Fanning so who is Fanning?

Mary Fanning is Patient Zero--the sole survivor of the Bolivian expedition described in the first part of the book. Obviously, we will read more about him and the Twelve (the death row inmates who were subsequently infected with the virus during the government's top-secret experiments) in the next book of the trilogy, aptly titled The Twelve.

Sarah Ahhh! Thank you! I remember zero, but I didn't remember he was fanning and it was driving me nuts!

Melanie So I recently had the opportunity to attend a reading of the Passage and got to meet Justin Cronin and get some of my questions answered. First I would like to say that he is my new favorite person! Second I think you should know that it is probably impossible to have a book this complicated and lengthy that doesn't have a few plot inonsistencies. During the reading he did mention that even though The Twelve was still embargoed, and that he cannot give any direct information, he did mention that the story sort of goes along side the first one, and fills in some major blanks. Anthony Carter plays a really large part in the next book, so you may want to re-read so that the characters are fresh in your minds. I for one, cannot wait! I'll read anything Cronin writes from now on.

C.E. I've just finished it today - am peeved that when Peter got to read 'the file' we weren't privvy to its contents in order to fill a few gaps, the most blatant being: what on earth was the original expedition into Bolivia for? What happened to the cancer victim tourists who appeared out of the jungle cured but only lived eighty days or so? Why weren't they vampires and how did the army know, or Dr lear for that matter, that vampires were rumoured to be in that jungle? And if they had heard of vampires way back then, why had the virus not spread across the americas already? Why did it take them to bring it back to the States if it was THAT contagious? I have a feeling that even in any sequel, these details will be overlooked and I'll never know...
Also, why would Peter want to send the Army back to save the colony yet completely overlook sending them to protect his own brother and his unborn nephew, who were much closer to the garrison and were in a far more vulnerable situation??? No one had any family back at the Colony - Who CARES what happened to them?
Amy was really disappointing, but if Cronin's got any sense, he's holding back on her powers until the next or final sequel. But to destroy those vials? That just seemed plain stupid. I mean, like you would! At least not until all those virals are dead and gone! Daft daft daft.
There's loads of other plot holes but I don't have time to go through them. What a shame - the first part of the book seemed so promising.
And going on the logic that the Many of each vampire cluster can be destroyed by killing one of the twelve, doesn't that mean that eventually someone's going to have to nuke those darned Bolivian bats?
That Bolivia thing is REALLY bugging me...
Sorry, should also note, I did find some of the book sublime, but those parts were ruined by the non delivery of a final resolution and plot hole plugging.

Synthesaur Thesaurus I have a gnawing thought: are Alicia and Amy contagious?
Can they infect other people with their "good" virus"?
