The main issue is dealing with African American slavery- Isabel wants to be free with her sister. Her old master said that she would before they passed away.
Revolutionary War- At this time, everyone was dealing with the revolutionary war. It was happening outside their widows, in the streets, with their brothers, and families.
Freedom- the entire nation at this time was fighting for their freedom, but why not a girl? And with that said, why not with an little African American girl?

this book relates to Chains because they are about the same time period. In the text, Clara was taught to sew by a slave on the plantation so that she can work in the "big house" instead of the HARD work in the fields. Then, Clara learns about The Underground Railroad. She sews a quilt/map so that she can remember the way to Freedom. When Clara was ready, she left the quilt behind for others to use. I think one can draw connections to Isabel in Chains and Clara! It also could be used to think what happened to Clara after she escaped... and also "What if Isabel would have escaped?
This is a book about a little boy, who wants to learn to read. But he cannot because of the color of his skin. He must work all day on a salt plantation. This connection that i made to Chains was how he is obligated to work when he really doesnt want too.
