Lilyan I didn't get it. Your amazon is registered as U.K. but your cred card is UAE? What are Amazon telling you? That there is a clash in the countries or that content not available for UAE?

message 52: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 44 comments Well, I seem to have solved the Kindle problem - I went on Manage your Kindle - even though I didn't have one at the time! - and found a button that asked me to confirm that I was in UK rather than UAE, which I promptly did (!) and, hey presto, I now have Kindle prices available!

So I took a chance and bought a Kindle which has been working very nicely, thankyou very much :)

Weirdly, though, of my three sets of credit card details on my Amazon a/c, two of which are UAE based, one in UK - all of them now carry my parents' UK address, yet seem to be functioning very well in spite of that.

Now the only worry is the credit card bill when my husband gets it..........!

message 53: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan Ya, that's how I dl books too, since I got the kindle through a UK address it directly got registered under that. My trouble came a couple of months later, when the kindle decided to be too smart and noted the clash in the countries, but one message to kindle support and they directly fixed it, without commenting about the whole U.A.E. thing, so it's all good.
Never noticed that it says whisper net. You cant dl through ur pc either if ur in uae, it also says " book not available in uae".

message 54: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan But it's okay, because they fix it for you, even if they know you live in UAE, cause I clearly stated to them that I live in UAE with UK address and they still resolved the issue :P Happy kindling!

message 55: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 44 comments I am using Whispernet. It just happens magically when I open my Kindle - unless you turn off the Wi Fi setting, which might be a good idea if you're not able to recharge for a while. 3G seems to take a lot of juice when it downloads.

I have moved my registartion fron UK to US several times because my Kindle was vought here and prefers .com if I'm operating directly from the computer.

message 56: by DubaiReader (new)

DubaiReader | 44 comments Oh, one other thought - I am now able to download Kindle for PC, which is nice because it's in colour and shows all the book covers. So I tend to choose my next read that way, it's easier than working from the list on my Kindle.

...and have you seen all the free books that are available, it's insane!? ....How many books can I load onto my Kindle????

message 57: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan Wait, what's kindle for PC? Somebody link me!

It doesn't matter where you are or who issued the card. As long as you have a valid UK address, you're good to go.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite. I use a US address and UAE credit card to buy books from Amazon's Kindle Store with no problems.

Do they send you an error message from time to time, telling you your country of residence and your amazon adress conflict?

No, how is that even possible if you have a US address for instance as your main Amazon account address. There shouldn't be any problems.

Did you receive any errors? Did Amazon send you an email or does this error message appear when trying to buy a book from the US Kindle Store?

message 69: by Lilyan (new)

Lilyan I have a U.K. Address and I'm using a UAE cred card.

Every two months or so I get an error message while attempting to buy a book that says my country of residence and the country on my amazon are conflicting.

I have to send amazon an email to fix it.
I don't know why this happens!

message 70: by Addy (new)

Addy (addykhan) You're probably better off with a US address and shopping at amazon.com rather than amazon.co.uk. They wiped a Norwegian's woman's Kindle. Just google it. Pretty scary.

message 71: by Jewel (new)

Jewel | 41 comments For my kindle, I just buy myself a gift card and use it, hadn't had a problem so far.
Anything I buy for Kindle deducts from the gift card, if I buy other things I use my CC.
I'm on Amazon.com though.

I agree with Adnan X., use a US address.

meesu Adnan X. wrote: "You're probably better off with a US address and shopping at amazon.com rather than amazon.co.uk. They wiped a Norwegian's woman's Kindle. Just google it. Pretty scary."

I read about that. They wiped her Kindle library because according to Amazon her account was directly "related" to another account which was blocked. But her account was not associated with the account Amazon closed. Amazon refused to give her an explanation as to how her account is connected. After a couple of weeks, they reactivated her account and her Kindle library with no explanation.

Note: when Amazon closes your account and wipes your Kindle library, you do not have access to your ebooks anymore. In other words, you do not own the books you buy from the Kindle Store. So imagine the frustration that woman had to deal with since she had a lot of books in her Kindle library.

I love my Kindle and I very much enjoy browsing and buying from Amazon's Kindle Store but this flaw annoys me to no end.

message 75: by MsB (new)

MsB So, let me get this straight.

If I buy a kindle from the UAE, I have to make sure that I use my British address and my British debit card and then I won't have any issues... even though I didn't buy it from the UK?

I bought my Kindle from Virgin Megastore here in Abu Dhabi. I use my US address and my UAE credit card. No issues so far.

Just make sure that when you first create an Amazon account that you enter a UK address as your main shipping and billing address including a UK phone number.

I don't want to give out wrong information. Like I stated, I use a US address so I don't know if it's the same, though I don't see why it wouldn't be.

It also may be best that Lilyan responds to your question as she uses hers with a UK address.

A lot of Kindle users in the UAE buy ebooks from either the US or UK Kindle Store using the above procedure because as you may know the Middle East Kindle Store is very limited in the number of ebooks offered.

Log in to your Amazon account. Navigate to 'Manage Your Kindle'. On the left of the page you'll see a header that reads 'Your Kindle Account'. Click on 'Country Settings'. What country do you have set for 'Current Country'?

Also check your Kindle Payment Settings. Make sure that you have your UK billing address selected and not a UAE address. You shouldn't be getting the error message you mentioned as long as you have everything set correctly.

I bought mine from Amazon directly, but you should not have any issues from buying it here and setting it up on a UK adress.

You can use a UAE credit card, that won't be an issue.

Mariam (mjbensal) | 4 comments Kindle is now available for sale in the UAE from Virgin Megastore (I don't know about other shops). There should be no problem setting it up with a UAE address now, I assume. :)

Lilyan Mariam 514 wrote: "Kindle is now available for sale in the UAE from Virgin Megastore (I don't know about other shops). There should be no problem setting it up with a UAE address now, I assume. :)"

Oh, I would not advise on doing that, as most kindle books are blocked for UAE citizens.

message 81: by meesu (new)

meesu Lilyan, you're somewhat correct but I would like to point something out. Ebooks in the Middle East Store are not blocked, users with a UAE address have access to all the ebooks in the ME Kindle Store, none are blocked. There is an impressive number of ebooks available in the ME Kindle Store. All of the classics are available for free, bestsellers are also available though of course not the recent ones.

Some Kindle users in the UAE like me and users in other countries prefer the US/UK Store as bestsellers are available instantaneously, especially in the US Kindle Store.

There are ebooks that are available in the US Kindle Store that can't be found in the UK Kindle Store and vice versa. The reason for that and why some ebooks are not available in the ME store all comes down to rights and laws. This is why paperbacks of the same book can be found in bookstores in the UAE but not ebooks in the ME store, this is because ebooks are digital and have different laws.

Amazon is working on having as many ebooks as possible for users here in the Middle East, they're in talks with publishers in order to have international publishing rights for ebooks to be sold in the Middle East Kindle Store. This can be seen as almost everyday new ebooks are introduced in the ME Store. So they're working on increasing the collection and that's great.

Depends on what kind of books you're looking for I guess.
I personally use my kindle for books not available int he UAE and those are blocked on the kindle UAE selection, hence I would not advice a UAE address.

message 83: by Mariam (new)

Mariam (mjbensal) | 4 comments I created my kindle account when I was in the States, so I don't really know. But, LadyX is right; none of the books are blocked for the UAE (I tried it with my mom's account), you just won't have a large variety.

Country/Region is set to the Middle East and as you can see there's a total of 1,479,449 Kindle books to be exact.

Nope. Not working for me. I only get seven books. How did you get so many books

message 90: by Rachel (new)

Rachel | 15 comments Mod
It's not illegal if you have a home base in another country. Most of us are not UAE citizens, so presumably we have a legitimate address somewhere else.

The UAE will eventually catch up. Until then, what's the alternative for Kindle users? Download illegally via any torrent site? No. Just put in your other address and you'll be able to download whatever you like. I've never had a problem doing it from here.

message 91: by Ahmad (new)

Ahmad Ardalan (ahmad_ardalan) | 9 comments I agree with Rachel, there is nothing for kindle users in the UAE.
Many of my friends have used other addresses to download my ebook The Clout Of Gen as well as other ebooks.

You should definitely be getting more than 7 books in the Middle East/US Kindle store.

In the link you posted. Click on Kindle eBooks under Department in the left hand side. You'll see that there are over a million eBooks!

What do you have set for 'Country'? US or Middle East?

Latifeh (latifehh) Hi guys, well I'm not from the UAE but I'm from Kuwait, I'm not from Kuwait hehe but I live in Kuwait, and I've been looking into buying a Kindle keyboard for quite a while now and when I was googling reviews I came across this discussion and it really interested me. Well, I'm so sick of waiting the 3 or 4 weeks it takes for books to get here after I order them and then I have to repeat the same process when I want to order more and it's just so tiring and annoying to wait that long! So I read about this Kindle keyboard and I really wanted it, then I read this discussion and saw how complicated it is to get it! Well first of all I do have a UK shipping address but it clearly states that it is an Aramex address and I do not have a UK billing address nor do I have a UK phone number or know anyone that does which probably makes the possibility of me enjoying a Kindle in Kuwait 0:( I really do want one though and I wanted to make sure that if I did have the billing address etc, would I be able to always change my country settings to UK every time I get that error message Lilyan seems to be getting? or if I e-mail them once about it they'll fix it forever? I don't know you guys I'm really confused but I am DYING to get my hands on a Kindle so I can just buy the book and start reading it instantaneously. Please help!
