help with recognizing this book :D [s]

okay, what i remember about this book is that it deals with slaves. There is a young white boy named Philip, and he goes on this journey of some sort on ships across a body of water in order to reach a place where there are slaves that have been captured. I'm pretty sure that the slaves are African. Well, Philip arrives, and he is given, or picks, his own slaves, Who is a young boy around his age (maybe 11 or 12 years). He names his slave Pea Soup. When they return to the ship, Philip tries to gain pea soups trust and everything, but pea soup doesn't budge to create a friendship.

There is an event later on in the story, where its during a storm, and the slaves try to rebel (i think) and Philip is hanging from the mast or some high part of the ship, and he's begging pea soup to help him. Pea soup doesn't help him, but instead kinda tries to harm Philip with some sort of small knife.
