I can't remember if it's a Fantasy or Sci Fi but I think there were 3 books in the series. It was about these kids who were friends and they came across an old run down house in the woods. Inside the house was this sword in a window sill? and if you take the sword out of the sill, they went back into the 18th century where their hero's were alive and they were caught sword fighting with real swords and they were taken away...well, they couldn't get back to the 20th century without the swords and they tried everything they could to get the swords back. If I remember correctly, in the last book there was a party or a masquerade ball and the kids found a room where there was an orb in the middle of the room and one of the kids either picked up the orb and threw it to the ground or he shattered it with something else, I can't remember but when the orb was shattered everything stood still except the kids. Everyone around them was motionless or floating around them and the last thing I remember was they were all in the room looking at the shattered orb wondering what to do and how to get their swords back. Not sure if there was another book after this or not. I read this book probably in the late 80's or early 90's, I can't remember.

Have you looked over any of the "time travel" list in listopia?
Oh yeah ... that's Pamela Dean's Secret Country trilogy. Starts with The Secret Country. (There's a sequel to the trilogy, actually a joint sequel to it and The Dubious Hills, that's coming out ... probably sometime next year.)
