Julianne Moore also skeeves me. Although, I didn't mind her as Frannie Hughes on As the World Turns. But when she hit the bigtime the revulsion began for me.

You must disavow her. She is horrible!

Haven't seen it yet. I think I'm safe until this weekend at which time you'll get the lowdown.

My brother in law lives there, so I've visited a couple times. I don't remember the accent was that bad, but maybe they were hiding it from the tourists.

Thanks for the review, Barb. Now I can grab a quick 90-minute nap and not have to worry about paying attention.
If you haven't dozed through a Dreamworks or Pixar flick in a darkened theater, I can't recommend it enough.

I'm with you on all three of those, Bun.

Yuck, I want to throw up when I see her and hear that ridiculous accent.

the director was on a local radio talk show today. a lot of debate because a local school district wants to initiate a voucher program. I am looking forward to seeing it. Denver has like a 50% graduation rate.

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll.
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.
-William Ernest Henley

I hear Matt Damon's accent was pretty good.

Rugby's not as confusing as you might thing - it makes way more sense than American football to me. That scene in the movie where they're explaining to kids did a pretty good job.
1)Both teams are trying to get a try, which is like a touchdown except that you actually have to touch the ball down on the ground, not just catch it in the endzone. A try is worth five points.
2)After every try there is a conversion kick like in football, except that it's not taken from straight in front of the posts. If somebody ran it in at the corner, they have to kick from the edge of the fields. A conversion is worth two points.
3)There are sometimes penalty kicks, which can come anywhere on the field. That's like a free kick in soccer but without guys lined up to block. There are guys who can kick an accurate penalty from sixty meters out! Most of them play for the Springboks. These kicks are worth three points.
4)Last way to score is a drop kick, which is pretty rare and pretty difficult, since the guy doing it has to assess the situation at speed. Three points.
5)When they run the ball, they can only pass backwards. So when you're on attack you tend to run in a kind of v formation with the ball carrier at the apex and a couple of other guys behind him for backup in case he needs to pass.
6)The team is fifteen, with seven replacements. The replacements can only be used once each, so the rest of the players have to get through the whole eighty minutes. There's an exception to the no-coming-back-on, but I won't bother explaining here.
7)There are two main "setpieces," the line-out and the scrum that happen when certain infringements occur. Lineouts happen when the ball goes out of the field. Scrums happen when somebody drops the ball forward (called a knock-on).
A line-out is a throw in. The #2 throws the ball in between two lines (one of his team, one of the opponent), and both compete to catch it.
Like so:
A scrum is when the largest guys on both teams lock arms and then crunch into each other, and the ball is fed under their feet, and their job is to get control of the ball and move it back toward their team while not buckling under the pressure.

But for the most part both teams are just trying to score tries (goals) and defend their own line.

The ball is fed in by the scrumhalf of the team that didn't drop the ball. Scrumhalf is the #9 position, and ee's generally the smallest guy on the field. He puts it in with his hands, at a spot marked by the referee. It's pretty much the center, but likely slanted somewhat toward his team.
The guy in the middle is called the hooker because he hooks the ball backward with his feet. Once it comes out the back it can be scooped up by hand again, often either by the guy at the back of the scrum, or else by the scrumhalf. A lot of the scrumhalf's job is to dig the ball out of piles of people and get it to someone who can carry it forward.
Here's Fourie Du Preez waiting to put the ball in to the scrum.

Also, the reason all those thighs are strapped like that is that those are also the guys who may be lifted into the air for the line outs. The strapping is for traction as well. See the lineout picture up above.

Sarah's score for the week so far:
Rugby convert: 1
Buffy convert: 1
And it's only Tuesday!
ETA If you go to the rugby thread, around comment #91 I resorted to beefcake photos to woo Ms. Petra.
I can't help you there, as rugby tests are always shown on Australian television. :D

I watch on DirecTV. The channel used to be Setanta, now it's Fox Sports Plus. They sometimes show some on one of the ESPNs, though that's usually either college or sevens. (Sevens is another variation, and not a bad one to watch.)
There are lots of sports bars that show it, and also some channels on the web where you can stream it for free or cheaply. I can show you those if you want.
@Gail - I was worried you'd be mad that I used all Bokke examples.
Welllll Sarah, you drag them in to Rugby. I'll try my hardest to convert them into Wallabies supporters when they arrive. All is fair in love war & rugby.:D
I am going to have to send you a supporters jersey Phil. :D

these are good too, Pi. :)

Yes please show me where I can stream them. Even if I don't end up getting hooked, I know my friend Sue would want to watch them.

I didn't realize Zu had actually paid for the streaming too - she said she'll check what it's called - watchrugbylive or something like that but it was a flat fee for the year of $40 for her to watch her rugby and her cricket.

Zu likes cricket too? I like her a lot. :)

Except that you like opposite teams. She's tried to get me to appreciate cricket, but it doesn't hold the same thrill as rugby. Except when they catch with bare hands. Ouch.

Finally cracked the shrinkwrap on this five-disc box (available at Costco for $19.99 - talk about a bonus feature...), shut down the final episode of "Hannah Montana" to a chorus of what sounded like harpies wailing, popped in "The 7th Voyage of Sinbad" and sat back and waited for all three kids to shit on my childhood memories. They didn't disappoint, dropping about four or five "F" bombs in regard to the special effects, "F" as in "fakey."
Feh... I still say that sword-fighting skeleton is the best thing Ray Harryhausen ever came up with except for maybe those flying discs that decimate the Capitol Building and Washington Monument in "Earth vs. The Flying Saucers."

Fast forward thirty five years, and the now-grown boy is sitting at Spielberg's house with a bunch of his industry friends, and the conversation shifts to "How did you get into the business?" And the guy said, "I got into special effects because my mother's friend took me to Harryhausen movies when I was a kid and I fell in love."
He hadn't really thought about it til that moment, but once he did, he looked up my father and wrote to him to tell him how he had been inspired, and my father flew out to LA and get the tour of his Hollywood monster warehouse.
Cool, huh?

Um, I forgot. I was hoping you wouldn't call me on that. I will get back to you with that information.

No big deal. I was just wondering if it was anyone we'd ever heard of.
