Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I usually enjoy films directed by Clint Eastwood. Some other REALLY good ones were:

CHANGELING(2008)
MILLION DOLLAR BABY(2004)
MYSTIC RIVER(2003)
THE BRIDGES OF MADISON COUNTY(1995)
ABSOLUTE POWER(1997)
IN THE LINE OF FIRE(1993)

I have INVICTUS to watch yet but I have other movies that are due back first.

message 1902: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I agree - he's an excellent director.
I'd add Unforgiven to that list of really high quality movies he has directed.
I thought Invictus was visually striking but suffered from the fact that there was SO much to tell. I had a hard time judging that one since I was so familiar with the story already.

message 1903: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, UNFORGIVEN was really good too but I saw it a long time ago. Have you seen CHANGELING? I really liked that one.

message 1904: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Changeling was very good. Harrowing. Actually, that word could describe most of these, couldn't it?

message 1905: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, that psycho guy was creepy. "harrowing" is a good word. Did you know that killer was based on a true case? Look up the movie on Wikipedia.

Another movie based on a true case that I think I've mentioned here before is AN AMERICAN CRIME(2007).

message 1906: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I don't really follow any sports but I still prefer that they would film it properly. It's more confusing the way you mentioned they did it.

"The Blind Side" on DVD.

Eh... Alright, but don't know what the big whoop was about.

Mona, after watching Changeling I found this book at the library - Nothing is Strange With You by James Jeffrey Paul. So creepy because it is true....

message 1910: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yes, I think the movies/books based on truth are the most creepy because these were actual people/events. I'm going to check on that book you mentioned. The title itself sounds interesting.

Gotta go. Will check in later.

I think you're right. They decided to film around the game instead of try to explain it. They were hampered by the fact that the final game had no tries - only penalties and drop goals. World Cup finals are always played very cautiously, which doesn't make for good drama.
Still, they could have built it up in other ways. It's a shame, because I think they lost a little bit of excitement and humanity because of it.
I also thought they lost something in turning the team into three people: Francois Pienaar, Chester Williams, and everyone else. They skipped the part where the biggest brutes on the team learned to sing the new anthem and surprised everyone with it. They didn't bother giving Joel Stransky a personality, so his final all-or-nothing drop kick seemed like an afterthought.
Oh well.

message 1912: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I agree - Matt Damon was excellent. Morgan Freeman got a lot of kudos for his performance but his accent drove me crazy.

What was a great story in real life just didn't translate all that well to the big screen.

But I still say Sandra Bullock is truly dazzling.

Sarah | 13814 comments BunWat wrote: "Ha! Yeah and he was too tall!"

Well, Mandela is taller than he looks - over six feet tall. Or at least he was before age started taking inches.
But Damon is really short, and Pienaar is tall, so the images of the two of them together are kind of backward.

message 1915: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Common surname in South Africa. There's also Ruan Pienaar, a current Springbok. And a couple of cricket players too, I think.

message 1916: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I am bribing my stepson B.to go see Sex and the City 2 with me next week and I'm not ashamed to admit it!!!!

On a more serious note the DH and I finally watched The Hurt Locker last week.

A very good movie, i would say

So i have 3 options over this weekend
Unthinkable
Prince of Persia
Ironman2

Which way should i go"

I've seen Iron Man 2 and can recommend it as a lighthearted escape from reality. I enjoyed it.

message 1918: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Saw Robin Hood today. I like the idea, but think perhaps it was dragged out a bit much. It seems to be setting up a sequel more than telling its own story. I give it three stars (of five).

Note to director: Consider pulling back for a wider shot on some fight sequences. The constant close-ups can be cool, but they get bothersome when they go on so long.

You just wrote my own HP story. Thanks for saving me the time. :)

message 1921: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Barb & Phil: I've seen most of the HP movies except for the last couple. I haven't read any of the books but hubby has read them all in marathon reading sessions(which really annoyed me btw).

I love vampire movies but somehow the books don't interest me. Right now, I'm working my way thru Season 2 of True Blood and really enjoying it. It's due back at the library on Thursday(I made full use of the very generous grace period).

After that, I need to watch UP IN THE AIR and INVICTUS in that order.

Up In The Air is really good. :)

message 1924: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Ms Petra: Yes that's one I definitely want to watch before I have to return it.

I've watched 10 out of 12 episodes of True Blood Season 2. I always have to make sure my daughter is not close by. It's not exactly kid-friendly. Luckily, she keeps her distance when I'm watching and asks me to turn down the volume if I'm watching my "vampire show."

message 1925: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) I only hear good things about True Blood. I guess I will have to put it on my hold list. Tell me it is better than Twilight?!

message 1926: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Ms Petra: I think it is. TWILIGHT is ok but not worth the hype.

I also enjoy DEXTER and am eagerly waiting for Season 4. I love watching seasons on DVD because it would be so hard for me to wait a week for the next episode.

BTW, Alan Ball, the guy who created TRUE BLOOD also did 6 FEET UNDER which I also like. I have not gotten very far in that one because the entire season is not available in one cover w/multiple DVD's which is very annoying.

I think this Alan guy has a preoccupation with death.

I also have season 1 of MAD MEN, another series that I've heard good things about.

message 1927: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments BunWat: Yup, Alan Ball created both. I really enjoy TRUE BLOOD. My brother got me into it. I can't wait for Season 3 to come out now but I know it'll be a while because it hasn't even starting airing on HBO yet.

I assume you're a fan of 6 FEET UNDER? How about DEXTER?

message 1928: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Mona, enjoy George Clooney :)

message 1931: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Yup, I'm here for just a couple more minutes. Sally, do you watch on HBO or get the seasons on DVD? I only have 2 episodes left to watch of Season 2 and am sad to see it end until Season 3 comes out on DVD.

I netflixed the pants off it last summer. When does season 3 come out?

message 1933: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Sally, it'll be a while. It doesn't even begin airing on HBO until next week I think. I hope I don't have to wait too long.

message 1934: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments On my various planes, I watched:

Have you Heard About the Morgans?

How to Train Your Dragon

Alice in Wonderland

When In Rome

Have you Heard About the Morgans was the worst of the lot - Hugh Grant played Hugh Grant and SJP played a marginally toned down SJP. But they eked some fun out of the plot line and there were a few good lines.

When in Rome was cute - mostly because Josh Duhamel is too adorable for words.

How to Train Your Dragon was so much fun. I'd like to see that again with kids.

Alice in Wonderland truly needs a larger screen for appreciation, but I still enjoyed it.

message 1935: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Youndyc: Hi! I want to see all the movies you mentioned. I also have not heard good things about HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT THE MORGANS but I like Hugh Grant.

I would not have watched ALICE IN WONDERLAND on a tiny airplane screen. The last movie I watched on a plane was a biographical one about the running back Ernie Ford. I can't remember the title but I liked it more than I thought I would.

I'm not a sports fan but watch sports-related movies/TV for the human interest angle(i.e. THE BLIND SIDE, COACH CARTER, "O").

ms.petra (mspetra) Get Him to the Greek looks fun! The Hangover kind of movie.

message 1937: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments There were great movie selections on my flights. Aer Lingus is awesome.

The Hangover was a total guilty pleasure. Pleasure because you laugh your ass off, guilty because you know you shouldn't laugh but you just have to!

I am planning on seeing the A-Team mostly because of Bradley Cooper and Liam Neeson.

message 1938: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I'll see Get Him to the Greek. I loved the character in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Hopefully a whole movie of him won't be overkill.

Hugh Grant and SJP doing themselves sounds horrific. Plus, they're basically mocking the place I live so I hate it.

message 1940: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments the last two films i've seen are lake tahoe (a bit slow to my taste, but i liked the characters and it has a simple, but good story) and salvador puig antich (about the spanish resistance under the franco regime and how salvador, a relatively innocent man, dies for participating in the resistance. i thought it was very good).

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I saw The Runaways last weekend, and really liked it, even though it had a "VH1: Behind the Music" quality to the storyline. Awesome music, loved seeing how totally into her music Joan Jett was. Kristen Stewart was great as Joan, tough and dedicated to the music, the driving force behind the Runaways. Stewart makes a far more believable punk rocker than a vampire-besotted klutz.

However, the movie was only partially about Joan. It focused on the lead singer in the band, Cherie Curry, and was based on her autobiography, Neon Angel. Dakota Fanning played Cherie, and she was great, too. The talent show where she lip-syncs to a Bowie song and gets heckled is awesome.

I wish the movie had followed Joan more, really, and the Runaways. The Runaways continued as a band for two years after Cherie left, but the movie doesn't cover that at all. In fact, it would more properly have been called "The Cherie Curry Story."

I was amused to learn that the real Cherie, after dropping out of the band and going through rehab, is now a chain saw artist in northern California.

I had this same conversation recently...if they added Robin Williams and made me watch that movie on an airplane, I'd be in hell.

Sarah | 13814 comments Good review of The Runaways, Jackie. I agree with everything you said. You can tell that it was Currie and Jett that okayed the movie, since Lita Ford and the composite bassist barely get any time. And Sandy West is dead, so I think she got a kinder portrayal than she might have otherwise.

Oh, is that why the bassist didn't say anything for the whole movie?

Yeah - they picked a good actress but gave her nothing to do because she was just a place holder/composite.

Also I've got "The Philadelphia Story" from Netflix, hope to watch that soon.

I also finished TRUE BLOOD Season 2 and enjoyed it. I can't wait for season 3. I'm also waiting for DEXTER SEASON 4.
