Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments my daughter bought that DVD for my son and he was wildly excited about it and then i never heard anything about it. i asked a few months later and he said "it was ok". that about sums it up from a guitar player

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments continuing on our Star Wars revisit and i have to say that jar jar binks annoys me. my wife giggles every time he talks. she loves him

message 1853: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Kevin, I don't think AVATAR lends itself to a 2nd viewing--especially from the big screen to the small one. The storyline is very generic and familiar. It's all about the special/visual effects in this movie.

Re: STAR WARS, I kinda like jar jar blinks too. Yoda and his talking style is what annoys me.

message 1854: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments mona, we are on the same page about avatar. all of the cartoony characters on star wars annoy me

message 1855: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Kevin, have you seen THE HURT LOCKER, the one that won the Oscar? If so, was it more deserving than AVATAR?

message 1856: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i have not. i will have to try that one. my wife is a movie nut so she will be glad i suggest a movie

message 1857: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I think I'm on the waiting list at the library for THE HURT LOCKER. My brother LOVED it and he did not like AVATAR.

If your wife is a movie nut, there is a social networking site for movie-lovers(like myself as well :) ) called
FILMCRAVE. I'm on there. You guys may want to check it out. BTW, what kind of movies does she like? My fave are thrillers.

message 1858: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i will def turn her on to that site. she loves most movies but she really likes chicky movies. she def like LOTR's but will watch almost anything except the gross humor guy/teen movies (ie: american pie, etc) we are watching all of the star wars flicks again right now.

message 1859: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Okay, I'm trying to remember who suggested it, but I finally picked up The Strangers from the library today (and Spanglish). I'll let you know how those turn out for me. Well... The Strangers, at least. Spanglish never gets old for me. :)

message 1860: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Heidi, that was me!:) I found that one to be somewhat disturbing and memorable. I still can't forget it and that says a lot because I watch a TON of movies.

Kevin, sorry, what are LOTR'S? My taste is pretty eclectic too. But I also am not into the gross/toilet humor ones.

I picked up LAW ABIDING CITIZEN from the library. Looks good. Will let you know.

It's getting late so gotta sign off now. Good Night All!

I really wanted to watch it today, but I was having laptop problems earlier and am just now able to really spend time on it, so I think I'll save it for tomorrow after work.

I'm gonna back Gabby81 on everything she just posted on Avatar. I'm a huge fan. Plus, I recognized Native American mysticism and tradition in the movie that just wowed me. Aside from that, it was a visual treat.

I've not seen The Hurt Locker, though, and I don't know if I want to see it. It doesn't seem like something which would appeal to me.

message 1864: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) your opinion noted, mine not changed. the special effects were incredible... cartoonish may have not been the right word to express what I found to be James Cameron's stereotyped characterizations. Really, the army sergeant was a little over the top. Obviously politics played a role in both films and that fundamental difference may say something about why Cameron and Bigelow are divorced.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I lasted maaaybe 20 minutes into the movie. I'll try again tomorrow. I can't watch it with my roommate in the house. I need to be alone so I can feel free to spaz. I can't do that with him here. Performance anxiety, I guess?

message 1869: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Heidi, this is the 3rd time I'm trying to post a comment. I don't know what's going on. Anyway, I'll be out of town for a couple days and the hotel doesn't have free internet access so the laptop stays home. I don't have an I-phone so I guess no surfing. I fully expect withdrawal symptoms to set in soon :) I'll check in with you all when I get back.

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Heidi, I forgot to ask what you thought of the first 20 minutes of STRANGERS.

message 1871: by [deleted user] (new)

Reviewed post-softball game, multi-recreational-beverage intake, so stick with me:

What passes for a plot here revolves loosely around the hiring of Ray Gange, playing himself, as a roadie for The Clash's 1978 “Sort It Out” tour. Gange, whose life is frequently hazed by a heavy alcohol intake, apparently has nothing better to do between shifts at a porn shop than having sex in toilet stalls, waiting for his dole check to arrive in the post, and hanging out with the band and his vertically-challenged skinhead mate. Most of the dialogue would benefit from subtitles unless you’re able to cut through the heavy Pom accents - made even more impenetrable by the effects of fermented malted grains - or translate “jack the lad,” “down the nick,” or “stroppy wankers.” I haven’t a clue.

There’s an undercurrent of social commentary at work here on the parts of directors David Mingay and Jack Hazan that I don’t even have a prayer of trying to convey, having slept through political science, economics AND social studies in high school.

With The Clash’s name appearing above the title, though, most won’t come here for either a message or character development. Gange, on film and reportedly in real life, spirals downward, drowning in a sea of tipple and stumbling through several scenes so seedy that you’re tempted to start shooting up. There’s no doubt he has a knack, but I’m not sure if it’s for acting or vomiting.

Despite revelations that “Rude Boy” may not have been filmed as close to “as it happened” as originally represented, there’s plenty here to recommend, such as (and you had to see this coming) the concert scenes, which are the picture of spontaneity, abandon, and chest-thumping bravado, The Clash lining ‘em up and knocking ‘em down with little or no regard for their or their crew’s physical well being, wedged onto postage stamp-sized stages and in many instances, sharing them with their audience. For Strummer, the guitar was less a musical instrument than a stage prop, but Simonon, Headon, and Mick Jones show no compunction about wielding and rattling theirs like sabres. If you've any doubt that The Clash were the white-hottest, hackle-raisingest band of their generation once they hit the boards, this should clinch it.

I liked it. It hooked me in. That's why I'm gonna try again, tomorrow. I just couldn't bear to watch what was gonna happen when she went to answer the door when she was all by herself in the house!!!

I need to be able to spaz with all 3 dogs in my lap.

The latest and final (thank Christ) "Shrek" installment. They've scraped through the bottom of the barrel and directly into the dark, dirty ground.

And talk about creative bankruptcy. Hollywood is now mining terrible 80's TV shows for inspiration. We saw a preview for a big-screen treatment of "The A Team."

Pardon me while I go set myself on fire.

If you want to keep your anonymity, you could always do like tadpole and post a picture of a male pop icon or figure... like a cartoon character or a singer or a famous actor, maybe your favorite?

Just a thought...

message 1890: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I saw Iron Man 2 yesterday. Eh. Not great, and I really wanted to like it.

They had a preview for The Last Airbender, though, and that looks really cool. I've seen most of the cartoon episodes. Thanks, small children who live in my house!

message 1891: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I saw IM2 with my son on Saturday. I thought it was pretty good for a sequel. Whereas most sequels are nothing more than a lame attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the original, this one actually had a decent story. And the tease after the credits was cool!

message 1892: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Oh, I agree, Phil, the post-credit tease was awesome, even if those felt like the longest credits ever.

I'm TOTALLY stoked about that movie, too, RA! My nephew got me hooked on it several years ago. When I found out they're making a movie about it, I about jumped out of my pants; I was so excited!

Zu nearly killed me for making her wait through those credits. She thinks if it was important enough to include in the movie, it should have been pre-credit. She gets bonus points for recognizing the prop in question though, since she doesn't read comics.

message 1897: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Hubby just set Avatar as a series recording on DVR along with a bunch of others. I swear his series are on like 10 times a day! I can't complain, I guess. I have a lot on there too.

I'm not really into his anime stuff but he watches it with my daughter so that gives me more time on here and to read. I am almost done with Harlan Coben's CAUGHT and it took me less than a week.

Sarah | 13814 comments Finally watched Gran Torino this weekend, which I thought was excellent. I loved Eastwood's repressed growls, and the little peeks into Hmong culture.

Also watched Big Fan, which was good but slight.

Sarah, I also enjoyed the glimpse of Hmong culture. I enjoy learning about cultures which is why I watch foreign films, listen to world music and enjoy world fiction.
