I concur with Clark; Freaks is not only outstanding, it's essential viewing. If you're nice, Heidi, maybe I'll loan you my copy.

Sweeter was just given a huge box of my grandpa's movies (rip) by my gramma. We've watched westerns the last three nights. Technicolor, violent, racist Westerns from the 60's. This is not good.

message 1804: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Ohhh, Sally... that's the sort of movie my stepdad loved to watch. Westerns, old Kung Fu, and war movies. :/ I feel your pain.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
I like war movies, and can dig Kung Fu. But Westerns are just ... offensively bad. ugh.

message 1806: by [deleted user] (new)

Sally, you'd love The Searchers. Great film, but John Wayne was HORRENDOUSLY racist throughout that film. And from what I read, he wasn't faking it.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments I love Rio Bravo, Sally. Any western with Dean Martin has just GOT to be good. :)
Look for that one in your box!

message 1808: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Sally I think my Grandpa's happiest moment was meeting Festus from "Gunsmoke" at an Iowa rodeo. Grandpa loved Gunsmoke.

message 1809: by Linda - Blue Oak (new)

Linda - Blue Oak Ha! Ashley I loved KickAss too. I'm smiling now just remembering it. Also, I've had fun in the last week since I saw it, getting reminded that some of my friends share my sense of humor, and some of my friends will probably never really understand me.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments AH! URGGGHHHH!!!! A close friend of mine just texted me to tell me that I need to watch Adam because I sound like the actress in the movie - her sister pointed it out to her. She agrees. So I went to check out the trailer to the move because now I'm intensely curious, and the trailer looks intriguing. Apparently I sound like Rose Byrne. I've only seen her in one other movie... and she was psychotic in that role. I'm not quite sure how to take this news. I'm not sure if this means she literally sounds like me or she talks like I talk or a combination of both? And then, does she mean the character sounds like me or Rose Byrne, in general? I requested the movie from the library, but I'm 16 of 16 on the wait list. UGH! Poop.

message 1811: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Isn't Rose Byrne the woman from the show Damages, she stars opposite Glenn Close? If that's her, then you can just catch her voice from that. Try FX to see if there are any downloads or check for reruns.

message 1812: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Yes. That's the same gal. I've tried to find videos of her on youtube, but she's Australian. Most of the videos are interviews, so she wasn't having to pull off an American dialect. I asked my friend what she meant by it, and she said it's the voice - her actual voice sounds just like mine.

message 1813: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments In Damages, she plays an American. So you won't be distracted by her real accent.
Would be nice to sound like Rose Byrne!

message 1814: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I thought Adam was a sweet movie. The guy in the title role was excellent.

message 1815: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments That's Claire Danes' husband. :) Hugh Dancy.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Claire Danes is married?

message 1817: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments It's on IMDB. True story. I knew they were dating, but I didn't know they married. I'm glad to know I wasn't the only person to miss that news. :)

message 1818: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Their house must have been interesting while he was studying for Adam and she was researching temple grandin.

message 1819: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments ::wonders what in the sam hell pook "temple grandin" is::

message 1820: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) It's an HBO movie about an autistic woman who becomes a scientist or something. Based on a true story etc.

There was this show on WGN when I was a kid, "Family Classics", with this fat dude, Frazier Thomas, as the host...he'd sit in this big chair, like in a mansion library, and introduce the old black and white movies. Now, some of them would be like "Boys Town" or whatever, but you'd get the occasional western. I think your grandma gave you the master tapes.

edit: I went back to Wikipedia and checked the list of Family Classics movies, and they don't have many westerns, just a lot of lame morality movies. I must have watched the westerns somewhere else.

My dad and I pretty much hate each other, by the way, but we both think The Magnificent Seven is one of the greatest goddamn movies ever made.

Serious. I guess I missed the background info or maybe I wasn't a member yet.

OK, I'll butt out now.

It was mostly in MiniAm that it was inferred, Clark. You wouldn't have necessarily known. I honestly thought that perhaps you were being sarcastic because men seem to have complicated relationships with their fathers... at least sarcasm was what I was hoping for - it would've been the gentler of the two.

No worries. I don't imagine RA will be too terribly upset with your response. It's a fair question.

sometimes when a person has a troublesome childhood or a less than perfect relationship with their parent, he/she does everything in their power not to repeat it. I know because I never want my daughter to experience the things I experienced and I want her to know the goodness in the world.... just saying....

message 1831: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments On a lighter note, Avatar seemed to be about fourteen hours long, so I only lasted the first twenty minutes or so.

Yeah, it was really great. I read the comics and the movie was definitely better. Though I kinda like the direction the comic went. Like Kickass doesn't get the girl in the end, I think it totally builds on his character. And I'm glad you liked it. My movie was totally over looked by everyone. It's good and everyone should see it (if they like that sorta thing though)...

message 1836: by Mary (last edited May 16, 2010 06:05PM) (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Watched Sherlock Holmes the other night, or tried to. I fell asleep about where Watson lost the engagement ring and woke up...when Holmes and Irene Adler were saying adieu. It's not that the movie bored me, I was just sleepy. Will try again anon.

message 1837: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments Mary, I saw Sherlock Holmes--didn't really care for it. Although I think Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law did a good job, the plot was not compelling. Some of the dialogue was good.

message 1838: by Mona (new)

Mona Garg (k1721m) | 350 comments I watched AVATAR today. I was so not in the mindset to watch a movie but I had to because I have to return it to the library tomorrow and there is a HUGE wait list.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this movie.Initially, I had low expectations and was intimidated by the length but the time went by fast. Yes, some of the storyline is predictable but the special/visual effects are great. I thought the creatures/environment of Pandora were fascinating and creative.

message 1839: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Tonight's selection was Gloomy Sunday. German with subtitles. Very well done. Erika Marozsán as Ilona was captivating to say the least.

message 1840: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) Avatar was so predictable and so cartoonish... very liberal bias... Hurt Locker is much better..much more realistic....

message 1841: by ms.petra (new)

ms.petra (mspetra) my teen and I watched Couples Retreat. Pleasantly surprised, although I love Vince Vaughn. It was better than expected!

message 1842: by Jaimie (new)

Jaimie (jaimie476) | 664 comments Yesterday, I watched The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus. I need to watch it again. I think I loved it but I'm not sure. The way Gilliam used the Depp, Law, and Farrel in place of Heath Ledger was flawless. If I didn't know better I'd have thought that was how it was supposed to be.

message 1848: by [deleted user] (new)

Went to Ironman 2 yesterday with my son. The original was better, but this was definitely good.

message 1849: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments i watched avatar with my wife yesterday at home. we had been to the theater to see it previously and when we watched it again i realized that mostly i loved the eye candy of it on the big screen. wonderful color and effects. very visually pleasing. on the small screen (47" LCD) it was not nearly as amazing and the thin story and writing became much more evident. one of the biggest disappointments was the ending theme music. wow, very generic disney sounding. after watching the original star war trilogy this weekend with its matchless movie soundtrack i gave the avatar song a big TBBBBBTTTTHHHHH

message 1850: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I saw Iron Man 2 this weekend. I agree with Jim. Original was better, but this was not a disappointment. Way better than most superhero movies.

Also - This Might Get Loud! Excellent! I wish I hadn't finished it late at night because it made me want to play.
Only question? (Mildly spoilery - there's not a plot so I don't think it's a real spoiler)

So you have these gods of electric guitar, right? And you spend most of a movie showing how ingenious they are. And then you end with an acoustic version of "The Weight"?
a)None of them truly shine on acoustic.
b)I love that song, but it has a dozen verses and no bridge and no space for the aforementioned shining.
c)Why pick a song that soars on a three part harmony when one of the three doesn't want to sing?
