Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I watched Zack and Miri Make A Porno today. I haven't laughed that hard in a LONG time! Friggin hilarious... I think I'll watch it again this week... and maybe again and again until the jokes get tired (or it's due back at the library).

Félix (habitseven) I saw Frida last night. I loved it. Fantastic!

We're watching Body of Lies right now. Good, but I'm not really digging the "southern" / "American" accents on Dicaprio and Crowe.

Friday I took my grandma to see Up in the Air - well, well worth it. I'd watch it again and again.

I tried to watch District 9 , and it is the first movie that I have quit watching in a long time. I don't think I even want to give it another chance.

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Why, Jimmy?

message 1507: by [deleted user] (new)

Jim, please reconsider. You won't be disappointed.

message 1508: by [deleted user] (new)

It was like a weird documentary following this guy around the alien slums, it was hard to follow the flow, and the interaction, and the plot line just didn't work.

message 1509: by [deleted user] (new)

Watched 500 Days of Summer last night. I loved it. It was funny and heartbreaking and bittersweet. When Summer ran into Tom near the end of the film, after she'd crushed his heart by getting married, and told him she found in her newlywed what she didn't find in Tom, my wife and I both yelled, "you bitch!"

I think every guy has dated a girl like Summer. I know I did. She's dead now. No woman gets to break my heart and get away with it...

message 1510: by [deleted user] (new)

I lover 500 Days of Summer too. Bitch was what came out of my mouth too.

message 1515: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Due to the fact that the old man and I were snowed in this weekend, we watched a LOT of movies on cable. By far the worst one was Sargeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton. It was so awful that we couldn't stop watching it. Now I know why the Brothers Gibb all sing falsetto--their pants are too tight! I mean waaaaaay too tight. When it looks like you stuffed a bunch of grapes down your pants....your pants is too tight.

If you really need any further proof that Aerosmith's or Alice Cooper's reasoning abilities were seriously clouded by opiates and Budweiser respectively, cue up the "Sargeant Pepper" DVD.

As for Frampton? He should've stuck with Humble Pie.

message 1517: by [deleted user] (new)

That Sergeant Pepper film is truly an abomination. It's a crime against cinema. Everyone, and I mean everyone, looks incredibly embarrassed to have taken part in that atrocity. Peter Frampton, who's normally a devil-may-care type of guy, looks as if he's taken part in a murder, and he's probably still losing sleep over taking part in this movie. Poor guy. I've always liked Frampton. Sorry this movie fucked your career beyond repair.

If I'm not mistaken, I think my sister has the soundtrack to that clusterfuck, on vinyl. I need to bust her chops about that.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments That's the weirdest movie. It's kind of like one big embarrassing music video. There's no dialog, but there's tons of bad 70's fashion.

message 1519: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Wait ... there were bad '70s fashions? Such as?

message 1520: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) Remember the Fernwood Tonight skit where they talked about how leisure suits caused cancer in rats?

message 1524: by [deleted user] (new)

Regarding chick flicks, I'll admit to watching Fried Green Tomatoes, if only for the hotness that is Mary-Louise Parker. And Mary Stuart Masterson, even if she was tomboyish (re: lesbian), was pretty hot, too.

Those really are the driving forces for watching that movie. I don't have Showtime anymore, so I can't watch Weeds.

Sarah | 13814 comments Jim, I'm here to tell you about these fancy things called DVD players. You can watch TV shows that have already happened, but without commercials!

:)

I liked Mary-Louise Parker in West Wing too.

Yeah, I could buy the DVD's, but it's not that important to me I guess. I could add Showtime back on too, but I need to trend away from the TV, not to it. Spring is coming, and it will be time to get outside with a vengeance.

message 1529: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Just teasing. I've been watching Weeds very slowly on Netflix.

message 1530: by [deleted user] (new)

And they have the first two or three seasons on instant watch on Netflix. I like to rewatch the first season especially just for the music.

message 1532: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Yes! The first season had excellent music!

message 1533: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I finally saw Up in the Air the other night. It wasn't quite what I expected. It's hard to describe my reaction specifically without spoilers. So let me sum it up as: it was disappointing and not all at the same time. And I thought Vera Farmiga is getting overrated for her performance in this film - she was good, occasionally exceptionally good, but everything I've read about this film talks about her as "luminous" or equivalent descriptors - she wasn't all that. Clooney, on the other hand, I think is getting just praise. And Anna Kendrick was incredibly good - I don't think she is getting quite the credit she deserves on this one.

message 1534: by Sally, la reina (new)

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
Thank you Youndy for seeing it my way! yes! Overrated fo' sho. And she's so "luminous" because of all those satin blouses she wears while on the road/in the air.

Anna Kendrick was the true supporting actress star in this one, I'd say.

message 1535: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments The satin blouses were a nice touch. Wonder how she kept them unwrinkled on the road? She'd have had to spend a lot of early mornings ironing...

Joy I watched Inglorious Basterds last night and really enjoyed it. I think Quentin Tarantino is a genius!

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I just watched a documentary about A Chorus Line... Every Little Step. Loved it!

Next in the queue, Enchanted April.

And, I'm obsessed with this release!!! I friggin' looooved the cartoon on Nickelodeon. My nephew turned me onto it.

message 1538: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) Snowed in again. Watched among others Year One--what can I say, I have a strange and disturbing weakness for Jack Black--and The Hangover (which was funny but not GENIUS funny).

message 1539: by Joy (new)

Joy I was disappointed in District 9. It wasn't bad but didn't seem like Academy Award material. Am I missing something?

message 1540: by [deleted user] (new)

Watched The Hurt Locker a couple of nights ago. Hands down, it's the best film of 2009. The tension that builds in every scene is paralyzing and riveting.

message 1541: by Joy (new)

Joy Yes, The Hurt Locker is great and so is Inglourious Basterds!

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I watched the excellent A Serious Man this afternoon. I'm not Jewish, so I didn't understand all the references, but damn, what a great film.

message 1544: by Joy (new)

Joy I hear A Serious Man is great - I'll watch anything the Coens put out.
I've been watching the 5th season of Weeds - I love Andy! The youngest son has really grown since last time; such cute sons!
I watched Two Lovers last night. Supposedly Joaquin's last movie - I sure hope not. I've never liked him more.

Ok, so I didn't really get Inglorious Basterds, but Sweeter really did. He loved it! But then again, he pulled a chair up to our 9" TV to read the subtitles and I just guessed at what was being said.

message 1546: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I watched (500) Days of Summer yesterday. Very cute.

message 1547: by [deleted user] (new)

Sally, how on Earth do you watch anything on a 9" TV? That's just wrong in so many ways!

message 1548: by [deleted user] (new)

By the way, I'm putting together a movie-based blog series - my 100 Favorite Films of All-Time. I do have the list of 100 films, but I'm still sorting the list, and then I'll need to write a short blurb about each film. I'll keep you posted.

We watched Year One the other night. That was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. It seemed to be going for a Monty Python or even Mel Brooks level of historical farce, which you would think Ivan Reitman could achieve...but no. It was truly terrible. Not funny. Even Zu agreed.

Somewhat better was The Rocker which had a couple of cute moments, and also allowed my sister and I to play "spot the Toronto landmark pretending to be Cleveland", which is always a fun game.

Crap. I'm behind, as usual. Crazy Heart is a story about an aging, alcoholic country star. The singer he took under his wing has eclipsed him in popularity. Yeah, this story has been told before. It's a good story of redemption without a super-cheesy ending. And it has Robert Duvall. The movie was sort of built around the music, which is by T-Bone Burnett and Stephen Bruton. It's gritty and maybe cliche' but it's got heart and some good music. And Maggie Gyllenhaal...and I've never particularly cared for her, but she's good here. And did I mention Robert Duvall?
