The other day at the dentist I got a roundhouse kick to the belly button. i think it was the first time I definitely felt it from the outside. My shirt even kind of billowed from the impact.

Nope. Baby Chuck Nolte (as in Noltemeyer)... a sort of hybrid of both names.

Are you thinking about running a warm bath and tapping a vein yet?

I'm thinking of running a warm bath, however.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I also saw Robert Downey, Jr.'s hot body in Sherlock Holmes on Sunday. :D I was very sleepy up until that point, but that sure perked me up.

message 1409: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Oh, and I watched a couple of DVDs on Monday night and last night - Easy Virtue (based on the Noel Coward screenplay) and I Love You, Man -

Easy Virtue had subtle, polite humor. Great cast - Kristin Scott Thomas, Colin Firth (MINE!), Jessica Biel, Ben Barnes, and that guy who was the brother from Death at a Funeral as the servant (the servants were hilarious).

I Love You, Man - I love Paul Rudd. I also love Jason Segal. I especially love Paul Rudd and Jason Segal together. Very funny - some great laugh-out-loud moments.

message 1410: by [deleted user] (new)

I Love You, Man was funnier than I thought it would be.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Gus wrote: "I Love You, Man was funnier than I thought it would be. "

Same here, Gus. The scene where Paul Rudd is downing shots in a race against Jon Favreau really got me laughing hard and crying from laughing! I wasn't expecting it.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments The Fantastic Mr. Fox was, indeed, fantastic! Although I have my doubts about it being a movie for kids. Lots of adult concerns, and gun violence.

But the animated animal puppets were hilarious. I especially loved their lack of table manners.

Hahahahahaha!!!

The lack of table manners was my favorite part. And visually it was very cool.

We took my stepfather, who HATED it, but the hatred prompted a lengthy and interesting discussion, which is still a reasonable result.

message 1414: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments In vague terms, it was about intended themes and whether it hit them or not, and about Roald Dahl himself.
My stepfather found it too violent, but he also doesn't seem to allow himself to enjoy anything (other than Monty Python) that doesn't fit a fairly archaic definition of High Art.
Our movie failures with him so far: Slumdog Millionaire, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story.
Our only success: Frost/Nixon.

Jackie "the Librarian" | 8991 comments It was pretty violent, I agree. I don't think it was a kids' movie at all. It had some similarities to the Oceans movies, with Wes Anderson quirkiness and Roald Dahl craziness mixed in.

message 1416: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa (buckythecat) I saw Crazy Heart at it's Dallas opening last Tuesday. Jeff Bridges is my new boyfriend. Move over, Paul Rudd.

message 1417: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments I watched "Marathon Man" the other night. I think seeing the handsome and young Dustin Hoffman must have brought out the Mrs. Robinson in me (see gossip thread).

message 1418: by Mary (new)

Mary (madamefifi) I watched half of Restoration yesterday but I've read the book and the movie just didn't cut it. Plus Robert Downey is just too good-looking to be Robert Merrivel and Sam Neill simply doesn't look anything like Charles II and isn't tall enough.

I am a very visual person.

message 1419: by Joy (new)

Joy Has anyone seen The Hurt Locker? We watched it last night and I thought it was good, very realistic and well acted.

message 1420: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I finally saw Avatar last night. I thought I might have been the last person in America to have seen it, but apparently not. Wesaw it in 2D, because 3D makes me physically ill. It was really quite spectacular, and I admire the creativity. The preaching was a bit over the top and the first scene at the tree of souls could have been almost completely excised; I thought Zoe Saldana was hissing and spitting a bit too much, but I suppose that fit the 'savages' image being portrayed. I think I might have enjoyed it even more - and don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it quite a bit and would even watch it again - had I not read so much about the movie and the various politics around it.

Still want to see Up in the Air.

Vanessa, tell me more about Crazy Heart - what was it like? Good stuff? I haven't heard anything about it, but I really like Jeff Bridges.

Should I take my grandmother to see that, or Up in the Air?

Félix (habitseven) I want to see Up In the Air.

I saw it last night too Youndy, and the theatre was packed.

message 1426: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) We had movie night in our building tonight. This month's selection was I Have Loved You For So Long with Kristin Scott Thomas.

It's an excellent movie. I thought the story and the acting were powerful.

message 1427: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Jim, our theater wasn't packed, but there were easily 20 or so. The 2D movie has been moved to one of the baby theaters - now that TVs are so big, those baby theaters kind of make me laugh. Until I try to unstick my shoes from the floor, then I get a little annoyed. :-)

What's movie night in your building, Larry? Does everyone come to somebody's place and watch a movie?

Sometimes your condo building sounds like a dorm. In a good way, I mean.

message 1429: by [deleted user] (new)

Youndy, there was a spot on the floor where I thought my shoe might come off because the floor was so sticky, but for the most part they keep the theaters pretty clean.

message 1430: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) RA we started it by going to someone's place to watch -- but as the size of the group grew, we had to move into out community room. Everyone brings a nosh and their own drinks.

Sometimes, with some of the younger rentals we have in the building, it's more like a dorm than we would like, actually.

Youndyc wrote, I finally saw Avatar last night. I thought I might have been the last person in America to have seen it, but apparently not.

Nope. I still haven't seen it. I do want to see it, but I have an unshakable feeling that I'll be disappointed.

message 1432: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments Did I hear on TV that Avatar is about to become pass the Titanic at the box office? Or did I hallucinate that? It was early and I was on a crossramp...

message 1433: by [deleted user] (new)

No, RA, I've heard the same thing as well. Avatar recouped its' production budget in 2 weeks' time, so any more ticket sales it's earning right now is profit gravy.

message 1434: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I thought it had already surpassed Titanic in gross figures, but of course when you do an inflation calculation to compare apples to apples, I think Titanic is still ahead. I read that if you calculate it that way, Gone With the Wind is still the highest grossing movie of all time.

message 1435: by [deleted user] (new)

Gus, I went to see it in the theater because everything that I had heard about it was that the visuals wouldn't translate to the small screen near as well. The 3D was quite good, and I didn't mind the story line which is by far the weakest link. If you don't go in with too exaggerated of expectations Gus, I think that you will find it a really good movie.

message 1436: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Saw Moon last night. Claustrophobic and intelligent sci fi. Sam Rockwell was excellent.

message 1437: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments I finally bit the bullet and saw Avatar as well. I thought it was visually stunning once I got past the nausea. The plot was slightly annoying, but the world of Pandora was so well drawn, that it earned back any lost brownie points. I'd certainly pay to see it again.

RA, I loved Julia and Julie. It made me want to eat and cook my way through and Italian cookbook. I don't care for French food.

The Hurt Locker was an amazing movie, one of the best of 2009, imo.

message 1438: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments Did anybody see the trailer for Salt?

message 1439: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Heather I am with you on the French food. I spent a week in Paris last summer and ate some great food, but a lot of it felt overly-messed with. Too precious with the sauces, the spices, too much done to it. I heard once that in France, the star is the chef, in Italy, the stars are the ingredients. Do you like the Silver Spoon cookbook? I like Marcella Hazan a lot.

message 1440: by Heather (new)

Heather (heatherjoy) | 384 comments The Silver Spoon cookbook is my bible, safely tucked away in my island. I gained 5lbs within a month of buying it, lol.

OK, God knows I need another 5 pounds. (Goes to Amazon to order away)...

message 1442: by [deleted user] (new)

I was thinking the exact opposite Cynthia, if I'm going to gain 5 lbs, it would be best not to even know the name of the title.

Sally (mrsnolte) | 17373 comments Mod
That Salt trailer is intense.
I've not heard of any upcoming movies, but that one sounds like a summer fun flick.

I like it when blondes dye their hair in movies by slathering on one coat of dye like that and their hair turns out perfectly raven. You know in real life the results would much more likely be like Anne when she tried to dye her hair to match Diana - it would turn green.

message 1444: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc | 1255 comments I also liked the trailer for that movie with Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Looks hysterical. Mostly I find, though, that the trailers are enough for me - I don't see a lot of movies.

message 1445: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Cameron Diaz grates on my nerves in any role.

Mary (madamefifi) Unbelievably I am watching Twilight as we speak. It happened to be on so I thought WTH. It is pretty much as I expected it to be. Lots of pretty faces and a very predictable plot.

My husband is mocking me relentlessly, by the way.

message 1447: by Heidi (new)
